I have two entries of 'Gnome' in my login screen why?
Logan Wright
are you complaining about de or gnu/linux?
Colton Walker
dmesg|grep -i firmware
post results (you might have to run dmesg as root/with sudo I heard)
Hudson Reyes
>there are people who fell so hard for the systemd is a botnet meme that they actually made a distro wew lad
Kayden Wright
at this pace they will be ahead of Debian development in a year
Jack Gray
actually read what this is about then make an educated comment
Brandon Torres
nah, still can't figure out how to write a package on it SlackBuild masterrace
Justin Flores
>t. systemd is a botnet memer
Chase Perry
running it with sudo gave the same output
John Brown
>I have no argument so I'll just call you a memer.
Owen Gomez
give me an example off an slackbuild you made and which steps you did
Cameron White
retrograde
Nicholas Hall
systemd is free software and this whole "init freedom" bullshit complete cancer
Dylan Flores
still not an educated comment, still an uniformed comment
Lincoln Martinez
wait, that name. could it be?
Samuel Jenkins
Free software doesn't automatically make it good software.
Mason Jones
fuck off authoritarian
Chase Sanders
Oh neat. I will keep Debian tho. SJWs be dammed, I don't give a shit unless they start popping out on my machine.
Samuel Peterson
>arguments against systemd >first result is muh UNIX philosophy
Joshua Hall
UNIX is a trademark, if people want UNIX they should get a mac
Alexander Barnes
SystemD: it works and its open source, but it doesnt follow the way of the god-emperor. Some may purge it completely, but why? It does its job well and after all, G.N.U
Juan Gonzalez
>open source but does it respect my freedoms?
Jackson Anderson
my pacman database is always locked when i boot qnd i have to delete db.lock. what should i do?
Christian Martinez
Cool, just remember that if you ever want to switch from your existing jessie install all you need to do is replace the package sources in sources.list with the devuan ones, run apt-get update apt-get install devuan-keyring apt-get dist-upgrade
and then reboot.

Reposting:
I'm using Linux Mate 17.1 Sarah, built on Ubuntu Xenial. I need to update a program called unar, but the dev only made it available for Yakkety and above. See here: pkgs.org/download/unar Notice how there's no 1.10 for Xenial? Yeah.
So in my infinite wisdom I decided to download the version for Yakkety and see if I could install it, and it calls for a package "libicu57" (see pic), but checking the package manager only shows up to "libicu55" and their site site.icu-project.org/download is too full of technical stuff for me to make sense of. Hoping someone can tell me if it's actually possible to get libicu updated to 57 or above and thus get unar 1.10 working on Xenial.
Also, as a last note, here's unar's site unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline notice the section that says how to compile manually, I'm thinking should I just try doing that from the start? Never compiled anything before.
tl;dr how to update unar to 1.10.1 on Linux Mate (Xenial)?
I just modified the template, modify some ./configure flag and make and make install.
Liam Walker
indeed it does. On an related note, dont fall for the "if it openly admits to spying and is open source its alright to opt in" thats the same mentality as "its MY choice to wear the burka"
Jackson Rodriguez
Linux Mate is the best Linux.
Owen Anderson
cant you just compile it yourself?
Blake Jackson
>but it doesnt follow the way of the god-emperor.
on the contrary, the systemd way is the way of lennart poettering, god-emperor of freedesktop
Aiden King
you follow a false prophet then, for the word of Stallman is the word of GNU, son of UNIX
Charles Hernandez
UNIX is a trademark, if you want UNIX, buy a Mac.
Jack Sanders
Both gnome music and lollypop are pretty shit, lollypop more so. What are cli music players like? Ive always been a visuals person myself prefering players with a nice organised library.
Aiden Edwards
I'm having a deja-gnu.
Noah Scott
Chromium? Can't think of any other software that does it.
Ian Gray
the term unix refers to a type of os though, gnu/ linux is a unix style os.
old ubuntu software too. Id argue a lot of "anonymous" shared data could easily be backtracked because of how vague and unprotected the term is
Kevin Turner
you have been to this place before.
Chase Adams
Unix was a operating system in the 70s. It doesn't exist anymore (good thing since it was proprietary anyway). Systems like GNU or BSD are like Unix, or "unix-like".
Jordan Thomas
I want to make a burner account for the wiki to edit the babbies first linux because devuan is ready for production use and needs to be updated. Is account creation still disabled because it's giving me problems.
Jonathan Wilson
Not to defend Muslims but in the west, it really is their choice to wear burkhas. The European caliphate hasn't been established quite yet so they don't get stoned if they go out uncovered in public. They choose to wear it because they were taught that women who don't are sluts and whores and they don't place high value on being sluts like western women do.
Chase Lee
stop shilling the systemd is bad meme, retard
Andrew Ward
Devuan has been mentioned under the debian section for a long time, but it no longer needs to say it's not ready for production use.
Levi Lee
What are the benefits of SystemD?
Brandon Edwards
It shaves off 0.05 seconds from your boot time
Hudson Jenkins
can someone explain the systemd meme? is it a botnet? don't know who to believe
Nathaniel Rodriguez
>not to defend muslims but ill proceed to defend muslims The amount of pressure from the islamic "communities" on them to wear them makes it a weighted choice. Furthermore i wasnt actually refering to muslims exclusively but rather to those who view as a liberating choice. You say yourself the biased view that is implanted into them.
Elijah Clark
Systemd is the kernel of Linux, it comes with binary blobs which could be backdoored, so it's better not to use it.
Parker Mitchell
Apple is Linux.
Carter Price
So when is the next version of Devuan is coming? I have no interest in running 2014 packages when debian stretch is coming soon
Luke Hall
it seems you got something wrong here systemd is an init system, the kernel of the Linux desktop is called "GNU"
Jason Ross
more than just binary blobs. The amount of hex droplets within the blobs make encryption a joke on systemd
William Rivera
Systemd is a new init system for Linux, and it works pretty well, most major distros use it now, but it does a lot of different things and it's tightly coupled so you can't really use part of it. Also makes it hard to replace.
Mason Lewis
>this whole thread again oh dear holy jesus christ on the cross
Juan Lewis
They're already working on testing to be ready for the next release, it'll get released after stretch gets released which will come out who knows when.
Logan Taylor
The kernel of the GNU/Linux desktop is called the Linux kernel.
Jose Turner
The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.
William Gutierrez
The problems people have with systemd are mainly ideological (doesn't follow the unix philosophy of "do one thing and do it well") but also based out of security concerns (one program doing so many things is a significant attack vector) as well as other things such as its use of binary log files and weird Windows-style error messages. Also Poettering is an asshole who once had to be taught how the rm command works.
Nolan Evans
I currently have Arch on my laptop. What distro should I change to?
Henry Rogers
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.
Josiah Sanchez
Can i upgrade to devuan testing by changing the repos like debian?
Carter Morales
saved
Ryder Lee
thanks, don't hate on sourcemage thou, the thing has its charms, pun intended
Hi Sup Forumsoods new to gnu/ linux and wondering if i can get sone software recommendations
movie player music player illustrator (for tablet drawing) DAW (if not vst support then at least programmable synths) screen recorder (p sure osb right?)
and any other useful stuff
Cheers
Sebastian Robinson
Should I move from Centos to devuan?
Joshua Powell
Also, if you don't want jessie just replace jessie with testing in the sources.list, all the repos are on the same server.
Noah Miller
>movie player smplayer+mpv with smtube+youtube-dl for watching yt from it >music player terminal: mpd server + ncmpcpp controller gui: audacious >illustrator inkscape, gimp, pinta
Start with MOC, you browser the filesystem by pressing enter over folders, press "?" to see more keys. Is the easiest and prettiest imho.
Zachary Davis
this, been using moc before I switched to mpd
Ryan White
>movie player mpv with baka-mplayer as frontend >music player deadbeef >illustrator not sure, maybe inkscape? >DAW lmms (not sure about how or if vst works on linux)
Grayson Powell
don't be fooled, there are legitimate technical reasons for not using systemd, the developer is known to leave bugs unfixed and bully anybody who won't use its abomination
is also another great tragedy into coming, as it is hard to fork and leaves too many ways to create vulnerabilities open is suspected to be intentionally tied to its developers, the RedHat corporation employees
Austin Lopez
Thanks!
Jeremiah Baker
Then why did so many major distros adopt systemd if it's so bad?
Jason Rogers
Don't download multiple programs for media.
>movie player >music player VLC. It plays basically anything, even streams from the internet. >screen recorder (p sure osb right?) Yes OBS is the best.
Nathaniel Thomas
>don't be fooled, there are legitimate technical reasons for not using systemd, the developer is known to leave bugs unfixed and bully anybody who won't use its abomination You're the one who's fooled. >Then why did so many major distros adopt systemd if it's so bad? 'cause it's actually good. All the people here who shit on it just heard that it's shit from other people here who shit on it.
Nathaniel Anderson
a quick look into systemd development thoughts?
Samuel Nelson
>UNIX triggered
Asher Roberts
Oh look, he made a mistake. And it's a reasonable mistake too, normally * matches everything which includes . and .. but rm skips those and reports it for safety. Fuck him! He's a complete idiot and the entire thing he wrote is complete garbage! EVERYONE GET HIM!!!
Owen Sanders
>systemctl start damagecontrold
Ian Wood
why did he lock the conversation?
Anthony Kelly
Oh my god this is so hard to choose distro.
Jonathan Moore
Debian
Josiah Sanchez
>Posts a reasonable argument in Poettering's favour >DAMAGECONTROL LOL
He locked the convo because the guy saw his mistake and is now moving on to the 100 other issues he has to work on. Are you even a fucking dev, guy? Why keep issues open longer than necessary?
Ian Johnson
this, people make mistakes, thats why issues exist
