Who are you quoting?

Kernels are relatively light. Its the modules that are a bloat.

>being this new

>newfag detected

>Devuan
I still can't get past the fact it sounds like a black man's name. Fucking dropped.

>put up a Windows VM just to run MS Office
>25GB ought to be enough
>Windows folder alone is almost 20GB in size after all the updates are done

>source is almost 100000 files with a size of over 1.5 GB
>kernel is just one file taking up a few megabytes

what kind of magic is this

>kernel still uses 1 gigabyte in memory

huh?
my arch uses 200mb in idle

>uses one gigabyte of RAM
>still werks on devices with 4 MB of RAM

again... WHAT KIND OF MAGIC IS THIS

the sources for 4.11 are 645M
my desktop's kernel packages add up to 307M installed, which is comprised of;
docs: 25M
headers: 54M
image: 4.4M
modules: 223M

the linux distribution/source code isn't *just* the kernel image itself

See That's not possible, because the Linux kernel is mapped into the first gigabyte of memory. and those pages are page-locked and reserved for the kernel.

but then who was

It has worked fine for me on a virtual machine with 512mb ram and no page file

>but then who was

but i've used literally the same kernel i use on my 20G ram machine with a VM's set as low as 64M ram

The absolute minimum is 256 MB, so no, you're just lying now.

It's 2 against 1. You lose.

kek, bait but replying;

Linux can even run on a HDD, so just no.

spritesmods.com/?art=hddhack

>opinions matter more than facts
The last one was a troll anyway. Who has 20 GB of RAM, and not a power of two?

tried to compile it in 2GB shm
wasn't enough

>unless you compile it with exotic configurations
>exotic configurations

Looks like you can't read, faggot.

you're talking about the (virtual) address space, not physical memory
in linux, the defaults are;
32bit: first 3G = userspace, last 1G = kernelspace
64bit: first 128T = userspace, next 128T = kernelspace

only space actually used is stored in real ram, so this doesn't mean 1G is always used in 32bit, or 128T in 64bit is always used

pic

Have you even read the article faggot. It was untouched mainline.

>untouched mainline.
this only suggests "no patches", not "unmodified configuration"
you can change a LOT without actually patching anything

>updates
Why do you install updates? Especially if you only need it for office.

Configurations ARE part of mainline, you stupid cunt

it's dev-1.
spelt devuan because VUA is what the developers that split from debian project called themselves. Veteran Unix Admins.

oh, and on windows they're;
32bit: 2G userspace, 2G kernelspace (can be set to 3/1 with a boot flag)
64bit: 8T userspace, 8T kernelspace (128/128 in server editions)

3•4+1•8

>Who has 20 GB of RAM
i do
% less /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal
MemTotal: 20547436 kB

Nice

$ less /proc/meminfo | grep MemTotal
MemTotal: Over 9000

what reason do i have to lie?
% sudo dmidecode -t memory | grep 'Installed Size:'
Installed Size: Not Installed
Installed Size: 4096 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Installed Size: 8192 MB (Double-bank Connection)
Installed Size: 8192 MB (Double-bank Connection)

This is an obvious bait thread please stop replying, do with sage if you have to and let he janitors do their work.

Cringe

>a gigabyte
no

he's not wrong, just doesn't understand what it means, or he's doing it deliberately to throw people off

the kernel allocates 1G of virtual address space for kernelspace, in 32bit

by comparison, windows allocates 2G of virtual address space for kernelspace, in 32bit

Fuck off fag, if Chinese cartoons desktop thread filled with loli are allowed then so is this thread

Actually you are counting the RAM required for a DE too. It just comes to show how little you know about GNU/Linux, and the fact that with such a poor level of knowledge you dare to claim that this or that is "not possible" just outs you as a stupid retard.

>20+ years in development
>not even a few percent market share
Ayyyy.

>replying to obvious bait

fight me

ok, don't cry

More like 99.99%. Servers, phones, tablets, TVs, cars, robots, appliances. Get fucked.

Install Gentoo.

>few percent market share
elite must be small.
this+{super,single_board}computer

I have 20GB of ram, pretty fucking common afaik, buy a computer with 4GB then buy a 16GB addon 8x8 because they are dirt cheap compared to retail upgrades.

I got the memory usage on Arch down to
