How the hell is there no open source alternative to Plex?

Considering it's full botnet. And no, Kodi is not a full alternative. Kodi is great for an in-home media center, but it can't handle transcoding and streaming to your devices. Am I missing something? I legitimately can't find a decent alternative to plex - not even components to stitch together to do it myself.

Emby is just as bad as plex - if you want transcoding you have to let them phone home and it's subscription based

>if you want transcoding you have to let them phone home and it's subscription based
Since fucking when? I dont have an emby account and it transcodes just fine.

i don't have a plex account and it transcodes just fine too

learn to vpn lol

I think OP is just a retard.

VPN doesn't bypass the 5 minute restriction on any mobile device without creating an account and paying $5/device

ITT: proprietary software

How is plex bot net? Turn off online authorisation or what ever the fuck is and allow local viewing on all devices without it. Forget the exact terms for doing this was so long ago.

I've never had to pay for PLEX, but I do have to VPN to my network.

protip: you don't have to use the apps. you can use a fucking browser. even on mobile.

i use emby + kodi + sonarr

emby is open sores.

Don't listen to these children. Use a minidlna to access your media from any device.

bashttpd and nothing. or any other http server
1. modern browsers support video and audio formats
2. or just type mpv and drag the link in the directory listing

Emby is much worse than Plex
>puts ads on your fucking home screen asking you to pay for pro
>even if you ignore them they put an arbitrary 15 second wait screen before every video asking you to upgrade
>if you buy a lifetime licence it's "only until the next version of mediabrowser or 2 years"
they're actually bigger jews than Plex.

I love Plex. I have over 8 TBs of movies, TV Shows, and music in my server, and I love being able to quickly share my collection with my friends and family. All that sounded literally paid shill, but I'm serious. I haven't bought Plex Pass or whatever the fuck, and have never felt the need to. They've said they can't see what we're watching or source where our files come from, and I choose to believe them unless you can prove otherwise. But I suspect you're just autistically opposed to closed-source software.

You honestly don't need it, you can still share your library all they need to do is create an account.

you can do the same with emby, which is foss

Welcome to the real world, which is a value economy. WHY should I:
>change my entire library to Emby's format
>make a NEW account
>PAY FOR COVER ART
>convince all my friends and family to make a new account

...other than being an autistic e-socialist.

>change my entire library to Emby's format
>convince all my friends and family to make a new account
not my nor emby's fault/problem
>make a NEW account
>PAY FOR COVER ART
wat

why can't plex feed, educated and employ me in a job where i don't have to work, but some how still get paid IT'S NOT FAIR

Cover Art is listed as a premium Feature.
Upon second glance, it looks like they're charging people to overlay a bluray logo on top of the movie art. Nice.

As for the other ones, they totally ruin the value proposition of transitioning to Emby. So, y'know, fuck you and stuff.

>Cover Art is listed as a premium Feature.
well i see cover art just fine in the web interface and in kodi

3/5 good taste in anime.

But now that I've seen that UI, I'm glad I use Plex.

Also, I've yet to see one answer to my question: how is Plex Botnet?

Just build your own. Its so simple of a task. What exactly does Plex do that's so difficult to do on your own?

>Ergo Proxy
meh
>Eromanga Sensei
trash

i haven't started eromanga sensei yet

>But now that I've seen that UI, I'm glad I use Plex.
it's just stock, haven't gotten around to seeing what skins are available for 17.x yet

I watch all my animus with kodi over the internet, I don't have any issues, web browser as an interface, click on my show/movie and it streams through vlc. I have no desire to watch my shows on a phone/tablet though.

Fucking this. I just run an nginx server with a default directory listing module on my HTPC. Transcoding would be nice every once in a while, but bandwidth is usually either gonna be good enough to stream my shit or so bad that I wouldn't be able to get it working on shit settings anyway. All that being said, apparently it IS possible to transcode with nginx directly, but I haven't bothered setting that up. Maybe I'll try it right now actually...

Present a media collection to a select group of people in a eyepleasing way, that scrapes metadata and keeps track of what episodes have and haven't been watched, with a wealth of controls.
Handle all media transcoding Server-side, including subtitling and audio tracks on the fly. Furthermore, be accessible on PC, Console, and both Phone OS'.

Go on, I'm waiting. At best, you'll make a logo.

I can stream video, with or without subtitles on a local network to any single platform within a day. That's all that I claim is within my power

Dibs on making the logo.

Why do you need transcoding? Literally just install apache + mod_dav + mod_ssl and add basic auth. Add it to kodi as a DAVS share.

You can even forward the port from your router and get a free noip hostname. Watch your shit anywhere. I've had this running flawlessly for years on a shitty pentium 4 debian server. Bonus points for deluged + deluge-web + transdroid.

Boom. Done.

>I can stream local video to other devices on my local network

Wow, it's fucking nothing. Have you mastered the art of making a network share, sensei? The fuck outta here.

Please don't imply you watch anime. It ruins the immersion for people who think Sup Forums is full of intelligent and capable individuals.

>people who think Sup Forums is full of intelligent and capable individuals.
such as?

If you don't know how to get stream kodi over the internet, then your the idiot. Also why do you need transcoding, I can stream to my ancient galaxy note 3 over 4G and it can handle subtitles and whatever video format i throw at it.

the reason i use emby isn't for transcoding, but rather for keeping track of what i've watched, that's all
it's a bit overkill, but it does the job

Yeah, something like that
Why? Its only for my own personal use. I'll just find something on the internet that looks neat

First off,
>your the idiot
Second,
>"it's so easy to do what Plex does! I could do it myself, by cobbling together a much of OTHER people's work!"

K Y S
Y
S

Transcoding is important because my bandwidth is more important than CPU cycles. I'd rather have my CPU pinned at 100% for 5 minutes while it chews through a movie than have my bandwidth fucked for 8 and a half hours while my dipshit friend marathons Lord Of the Rings.

>>not even components to stitch together to do it myself

>>cobbling together a much of OTHER people's work!

Fuck.

m-

i have nothing

Emby is nagware. Please try again with actual open source instead of a bait-and-switch. I bet you actually gave these cocksuckers money.

Look at their arrogance and the following of shills who jump down the throat of anyone who posts on their forum.

Some anime touches on shit Hollywood won't go near. Like western TV though, most of it is shit.

Synergy is the same way.
It's free/open source... If you want to compile it yourself.
>LinusTechTips shills this on the reg

this. literally just run a golang webserver

You can compile it yourself and still get nagged. The devs move the nagware code around every few releases.

Can't even compile the android client even more.

Have you decided on color scheme?

>>Eromanga Sensei
>trash
how insecure are you to not like it?

not that dude but desu the manga was good, any adaptation that has the slightest bit of ecchi shit is way overdone, like in the manga you get 1 small panel of "lol xD accidental panty shot" then in the anime its gonna be a fucking 30 second slow motion montage

>this

sorry but instead of watching borderline porn with generic ecchi shit i can just watch porn or hentai you know

See
