Is it possible to only download a certain part of torrent?

Is it possible to only download a certain part of torrent?

Like only download the last 5 minutes of a 2 hour movie torrent.

Yes. Google it.

No.

Most clients don't allow you to but it is in the torrent spec. Don't know of any that do top of my head.

Torrents divide data into blocks. If you stop a torrent before it finishes, you will wind up with only some data. Even if you blacklist certain files in a torrent, you will end up with unwanted data because some of that data will be included in the blocks that you do want.

You cannot download only certain blocks of one file.

Of course you can, but your shit client won't offer you that option.

Some do have "first/last pieces first" for previewing media files, and "download in order" for streaming.

These are bad for the network as a whole though.

shh dont talk about (((torrenting)))

You need to lie that you have X files already.
Think some torrent clients that allow streaming of media, no save do this.

Fork and open source bittorrent client and then implement a feature to choose specific blocks

>bad for the network
i love this fucking meme

if you're downloading something with a speed you can stream it at, the swarm wont give half a shit about your contribution

if you're downloading something ultra rare from like 2 peers at 0.5 kb/s, you wont be previewing shit, and you better seed that crap for forever anyway or you're a horrible person

Popcorn time

Is this a legit massproduced block?

>get popcorntime
>jump to the scene you want, let it load
>close it down
there you go you just downloaded the part you want of the movie

>no waterpump to move water
ya fugged up

It's within the specification of the protocol however as far as I'm aware no mainstream clients have implemented it.

But there is.

It's bad if lots of people do it when a torrent is very young.

>recommending a botnet

Normalfags get out.

You can, some torrents will list files to download, and you can select which ones you want to download.

man it feels so good when a torrent doesn't find peers, then one lone russian guy comes on late at night one day and seeds your jpop at 1kbps.

wherever he is, bless his soul.

utorrent can stream video, not sure what version does this without botnet.

you click stream at it will start the first blocks of the torrent, if you click half way into the video it will pause until its buffered.

>pump above res
>air in the tubes
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

webtorrent is much better for streaming
>Muh opensource

I love that guy. Bless him

this

its called sequential downloading, but you choose which part. Its cancer that goes against proper torrent ethics

You can if you have the file with the other 1 hour 55 minutes of the movie.

Ideally the file in question would have the MOOV atom flag at start of file or else you would have to download more data than needed (beginning, end, and preview).

You'll need a modified client that only retrieves the chunks you want chunks. Most clients only offers you to select whole files for downloading, not parts of it.

*remove second instance of "chunk" from the first sentence to enhance readability.

It wouldn't be bad for the network if every fucking client had this enabled by default.

Yes it would. It's in the best interest of the network to make as many different chunks available. This means that a seeder should prioritize chunks that aren't uploaded as much,

This is incompatible with downloading in order.

>idk how torrents work
