New world colonialism is different from African/Asian colonialism. Outside of the Philippines Spain didn't have much of the latter since they were irrelevant by the time it was happening. You have to compare American/Australian colonies to each other.
The Anglophone Caribbean is roughly on par with Latin America, while US/Canada/Aus/NZ have far higher standards of living than any ex-spanish colony.

Great Britain colonized a place with wide open land and comparatively few hunter-gatherer tribes. Spain colonized the places where Native civilization was at its peak and there were still a shit load of them.
