2) Use home PC (or VPS) to run compressing proxy or VPN (gzip is not enough). Google about how to run it on VPS. I think that there are some history-keeping proxies which will compress traffic better but I have not heard of any yet. Ideally this procy should be the HTTPS initiator or HTTPS MITM so that it can compress HTTPS too.
3) Mail client instead of mail in browser
4) Turn off all programs which can use internet voluntarily. My Samsung Wave phone has been transmitting 3KB of data cyclically and runied my small data plan.
5) Keep you daily usage under 200/30 so that you have some spare traffic.
