The fucker was a 3 pound beast, ran the shittastic Windows Mobile, and had performance that would make you cry for doing anything other than it was designed for -- to run business software.
He was a logistics manager, and had to run around his warehouse or wtfever with his tablet PC doing work as he was checking up on shit. Likewise, the thing was priced at like $2,000, and there was no intention for it to be sold to anyone other than to people like him.
Did Apple invent the tablet? No. What Apple did was actually make a tablet that served the average person's needs and desires well, and made them want to buy it. Apple made the tablet that your grandmother, mom, dad, and little sister and little brother wanted to use, and while you wouldn't buy one for yourself, you borrowed it to browse the web while watching TV anyway because you were a teenage brokefag that spent your allowance on a shitty gaming PC rather than a laptop.

Let's be real here -- Samsung phones alone could not have bankrolled screen R&D. Either they'd need help from either Apple or the rest of the Android market, and 80% of the Android market outside of Samsung would never invest in their own R&D (as we see with Samsung having to just suck it up and develop their own Exynos chips to keep up with Apple).
You know Samsung makes more than just phoned right?
And OLED TVs are barely economically viable, having costed over $5,000 a set until the past year or so with the phone market bankrolling the R&D.
Chinese companies were making smart watches for years before apple announced theirs.

Pretty standard on all early phones - since they didn't actually play music (unless you called some phone number with call-waiting). Apple isn't the first company which had audio over Bluetooth only.
If consumers were knowledgeable and willing to express clearly what they want companies would produce only the things which are needed.
