Doesn't come with proprietary software out of the box, so it's basically Fedora with .deb packages instead of .rpm
Ubuntu is bloated and comes with proprietary software as well as being a botnet.

it has no advantages over ubuntu at all
it's just that people don't want to be noobuntu users

I use debian rolling releases because I'm already familiar with it from working with it from servers and development. And I don't use anything the ubuntu adds, apart from a few ppas I guess.

FUCKING THIS
There are only two distros in the linux world, Ubuntu if you want something that just werks or Arch if you want stg to customize.

You should always provide proof when saying stg is botnet. Same as when Sup Forums claims Vivaldi, Safari and Opera are botnet

> you should always provide proof
Where do you think you are?

proof.. kek

mousepad < medit
gnome-terminal < terminator
libreoffice < wps
alsa < pulseaudio
network-manager < wicd
brasero[ohyeh, 2017...still burn cd's]

debian ftw

So I fell for the Sup Forums meme and installed Debian in a virtual machine, for practice (took more than an hour). What should I do next? How do I make my desktop look as pretty as those in the screenfetch threads? I know I'm very new, but please guide me.

next step would be changing your language to english you barbarian

Nice, I plan on spending my entire weekend installing Debian in a VM too ;3 ... and then next weekend, I hope to figure out how to get it running on my laptop.

No, Ubuntu is a harder version of Debian. Ubuntu is a broken sack of shit that's gimped out of the box, AKA a walled garden.

Maybe I'll do it eventually, it feels pretty smooth. Is installing on a real machine harder than in a virtual one?

Also, where are the settings?

>sudo apt install xfce4
>log out
>log in using xfce
>look up xfce ricing guides

>took more than an hour
The Debian installer is just hitting next 5 times. How did it take you an hour?

Go impale muslims u ugly romanian

Downloading

I don't understand why people would use Ubuntu.

Debian testing is generally better than the current Ubuntu release and Debian stable is better than LTS.

>sudo: command not found
Emphatically wat

Debian is not for ricing! Do something productive.

>he set a root password instead of leaving it blank

he's a dumb gypsy

Here you go my dude:
wiki.debian.org/sudo

Do a Google search for "add sudoers with visudo debian"

sorry but there are at least 5 distros more relevant in the linux world than arch

it's actually stable, ubuntu will break at the drop of a hat

oh, it's a new user that doesn't know shit, hi.

hello r/numixporn.

False. Ubuntu does not have proprietary software by default. There are some blobs in the kernel but this is easily fixed by using the linux libre kernel. Also, botnet is purely a meme and only applied to the Amazon lens in unity which is now disabled by default. Not that it matters since unity is dead.

sudo isn't included in debian 9 by default because it is set up via su (direct root)

literally just su into root, then apt install sudo.

>wanting sudo bloat

Better logo and looks nicer out of the box.

The reasons I moved:

- learn more about Linux
- no corporate bullshit

now install it onto a primary hard drive partition.

I like Cinnamon and I dislike Unity. Also, it's not that hard. And once properly configured works almost like Windows.

>Why use debian for desktop?
Because it fits my needs.
>Isn't it just a more difficult ubunutu?
No.

Cinnamon works fine on Ubuntu fyi. Not that I care so much for distros though. As long as it has an easy to use package manager with lots of packages and DEs, it doesn't really matter

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:embrosyn/cinnamon doesn't work anymore.
