/vrg/ - Virtual Reality General

We are starting a hub for anons who have an interest in VR. All text is a WIP.

>But VR is a dumb gimmick and-
This thread isn't for you. Go shitpost somewhere else. If you're genuinely curious about VR, keep reading to learn more, and post if you have questions.

>What is VR? Why should I care?
Virtual reality seeks to fool your perceptual systems into believing that you're in a different world. It's been a sci-fi meme for decades that once was even attempted and failed, but consumer technology has advanced to the point where it's now possible.

>I don't believe the hype. Isn't VR just a gimmick?
The only way to really understand VR is to experience it. If you're skeptical, try a live demo and make up your own mind.

You mean phone based VR?

Depends. Most users just treat it as a toy and quickly forget about it, or it just makes them want true PC VR.

The intro paste answers this.

The short answer is no and the slightly longer answer is maybe, depending on what we're exactly talking about in terms of hardware and what expectations you'd have going in.

That's a lot of effort into that OP post, but okay.
I've got a Vive, what to discuss? Gear VR is getting better and better too, these days.

Yeah I went full autist, because I've been doing VR for a long time and haven't seen any good attempts at a VR general. Since we're at an early state, I wanted it to be as detailed and helpful as possible. I got a bit of help from a few anons though.

VR is a dumb gimmick, I feel like a dumbass for getting oculus last year, I haven't even used it for months. All it did was make some fatass kid into a billionaire. Carmack himself says there is no future in it now because phone manufacturers are no longer increasing resolution due to consumers literally not being able to tell a difference between 1440 and 4k on their phones and it just wasting their battery. So since these VR headsets rely on samsung spending billions to create new screens, there is not going to be any higher quality screen for the foreseeable future, so you can say goodbye to the hope of a CV2 with higher res and no screendoor effect.

I would own one. Maybe when they are $200.

I've tried the vive and it was pretty cool, but I'm still waiting for the 2nd gen. Any rumours? I haven't heard anything about it.

The estimate is another three years or 2020 for vive and oculus part deux.

Reason because of cost, gpu improvement and nothing radically different or improved.

That's your fault for not getting the vive you dumbass, I hope you blow all your money on stupid shit like the idiot you are and end up homeless.

vive is the same as oculus, actually a little worse display.

>This thread isn't for you. Go shitpost somewhere else.

I hope you know that's bait. Also false flagging. Also I hope you're just baiting too.

The displays are for the most part the same. Source: I own both.

The only real differences in the experience that are worth truly talking about with the everyday consumer in mind is how hard it is to setup and how much it costs. So with that in mind, the Rift is the best option for cost, but the Vive is the best option for ease of setup (but it's still a pain to setup).

>2020
Damn, guess I'll have to reconsider then. Is it entertaining in the long run? Only tried it for a few days so the initial excitement was still present.

web.janusvr.com/#janus.url=http://usagii.net/wikiverse/Vaporwave_Plaza

meet me in the metaverse. best results in chrome.

not baiting, VR really is dead. Just look at how many players are in the multiplayer games. It is a ghost town. BZflag has a bigger user base than VR. It's just a hyped up money grab. Facebook spent $500m to give to developers alone. What has that brought? Pretty sad you have to spend so much to try to get something off the ground and still fail. The only winners are zenimax and that fatass. They even made a few episodes of silicon valley about how shitty the whole situation is.

No, the most speculated year by informed enthusiasts is actually 2019. 2020 Probably for a bit lower price/sales to hit, as the upgraded headsets will probably be as expensive as the Vive was at launch.

>Is it entertaining in the long run?
Short answer is yes and the long answer is in the intro paste.

Still a dumbass for buying what is basically a testing technology. Modern VR Is in its infancy, and yet, you, knowing this, expected it to function like something that has been around for a while. You sir, are, By definition, an idiot.

>not baiting

That's hard to believe when you started your post with the exact quote in the OP. But seriously though your language is exactly like that of a shitposter. Why should I even consider your opinion?

hrm. nobody is coming to say hi.

whats the most open VR system right now? I want something I can easily use with GNU/Linux, and hopefully also Android. I dont want arbitrary system requirements either, such as a minimum video card or cpu

testing technology would be DK1 and DK2, carmack himself said they wouldn't release a consumer product until they have it right otherwise it would cause the perception to be bad and create the 1990s vr situation all over again. So going by the creator himself you are basically agreeing that it has failed.

Too busy shitposting. Does Janus let me shitpost while flying through different other webs? Does it have a concept for tabs and windows?

yes. hit the ~ key to make shitposts.

Then again, in janus, you can be the shitpost, virtually.

>something I can easily use with GNU/Linux, and hopefully also Android.

There is nothing, and there will be nothing until Khronos' OpenXR API comes out. And even then it may before it's taken advantage of. The standards just haven't been set yet.

The Vive sort of kind of works with Linux but Valve's support of it isn't great.

2019 or 2020. Still a while to go.

yes because stereoscopy requires some obscenely powerful computer
not
its literally technology from 200 years ago

I have a Vive. The porn is fantastic, and made the purchase worth it.

Waifu Sex Simulator and Play Club are great.

>MUH DK1 AND DK2
The oculus was NOT EVEN ONCE marketed towards the masses, It is a tech IN ITS INFANCY, FOR ENTHUSIASTS (Not morons who don't understand how technology evolves). Dk1 and DK2 were for companies to be able to make games, Not for morons like you to use. Seriously, get an IQ test, that disability money would probably come in handy for you.

>Putting a Image through two magnifying glasses in front of your eyeballs is the same as Rendering graphically complex games.
You must not have done very well in school.
Also, i said VIVE, i never once brought up the oculus prior to this.

why though? all you need is to take a scene with 2 different slightly offset viewpoints, and a little distortion and a lens. this shit is so simple to design and so simple to make, and have literally every software support it too with minimal code added to the game/software

>Rendering graphically complex games.
the ONLY difference between VR and non-VR is VR has to render 2 scenes, one for each eye.

BIG

FUCKING

DEAL

it doesnt get any easier to implement than this. you just need twice the graphics capability to produce a VR game at the same frame rates as a non VR. So 2 of the same GPU for example

there's no way you can actually be this fucking stupid, right? you must be pretending.

>The oculus was NOT EVEN ONCE marketed towards the masses
ok so normiebook buying oculus for $2b and zuckerberg getting on stage and multiple tv shows talking about how great vr is is not mass marketing

I'm talking about prior to that tard jew zucker buying that shit out.

please tell me why there is anything more to it than that.

protip, there isnt

you can take any existing game, have it render 2 scenes from slightly offset viewpoints, and you now have full stereoscopy. this takes douple the gpu power

now add the desired field curvature and put a lens in front of it. these dont add anything to system requirements

VR is intentionally being held back to make consumers believe its some magical technology when it isnt, its just basic stereoscopy and thats it

no. I'm done. My brain cells are killing themselves just from reading that post.

there was a little bit of work involved to get the lag from the computer to the screen to be 20ms or less but that is pretty much it.

It's a screen taped to my face.

Wake me up when this VR fad paves the way for Augmented Reality.

its obvious you do not understand what VR even really is or how it works. this also explains why you dont have a single rebuttal

DK2 came out 3 years ago, same time facebook bought them. They released a final version just last year literally called the Consumer Version, not sure how much more apparent it needs to be that they are mass marketing this shit. Even carmack said on video he thinks vr would be the next big thing with billions of devices in use. Not sure why you are defending this shit.

explain it then senpai

Sure, kid.
Mhm... suuureee.

>3D spaces described by vector functions being rendered simultaneously in two different viewpoints is ez!
Close the Sup Forums tab and pick up a book. A huge portion of texture optimization functions don't work with multiple POVs.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereoscopy

>continues to not offer a single counter-point

You can't fix stupid. So why even bother?

>texture optimization
literally zero fucks given, and also a non-issue. You can do nothing more than what I posted, and you will get a perfectly fine VR experience

ive contributed technical information
youve contributed childish insults

>Wikipedia article
>"Technical information"
Stop. Just stop. All you have to do is click the link.

see
that is not a link to a wikipedia article. that is information of a technical nature being contributed to the conversation.

you should give it a try

Before you make yourself look like more of an idiot.

OP here. This was an interesting experience and I'll probably modify the OP a bit.

>Close the Sup Forums tab and pick up a book. A huge portion of texture optimization functions don't work with multiple POVs.
lol this is bs. i can image some autistic 5th grader blurting this out after a classmate mentions vr thinking they will seem superior or something.

>The first way VR does this is with the stereoscopic display.
2nd sentence. thanks for proving my point

Ill admit features such as head tracking have more complex requirements, but theres no reason you cant have a VR headset that omits these features.

Unless that reason is you are trying to sell proprietary and expensive hardware and software.

>oh you want to use VR, you must upgrade to Windows 10
>oh you want to use VR, you need at least a GTX 970
>oh you want to use VR, you need this $800 motion tracking headset instead of the simple one you could have had years ago

these are arbitrary requirements and we can and should have ready access to 3D open standard headsets right now, but shady corporate practices are preventing this from happening; *not* technology

sigh. I'm still waiting. VR is here. I'm here. You aren't.

OP here. This is just the first thread. Don't worry, we'll shill as much as we can and get a larger user base over time. This thread can die as well too - I'm working on some probably necessary changes to the OP as well as the pastes. I'd join you if I wasn't busy with this.

cool. jacking out then.

Closest I could get to the Vive working with linux as my primary OS without resorting to dual booting was through GPU passthrough.
But I had to pass through an entire USB controller as well for it to work due to QEMU's 4 USB device limit restriction which the Vive alone exceeds.
I hope Vulkan kicks off soon and becomes mainstream.

You should try CM3D2, it was a bit finicky to install but well worth it.

The whole point of VR is to be immersive, without those kinds of features, you might as well just tape two computer screens to your face. environment recognition so you don't run into a wall would be nice too.

I am content enough with current gen, if anything increasing adoption rate has to be a priority.
Hardware price has to be lowered significantly without compromising the experience and more high Quality content needs to be released. There is little to no quality control on steam currently.

Can't wait for the new knuckles motion controllers with finger tracking. The tactile grips on the current vive wands really suck. Tried leap motion for hand tracking which was cool but you loose tracking if you are not looking at your hands, this will combine the best of both worlds.
>youtube.com/watch?v=FCkD5aM3AwQ

Eyyy, finally, a thread where I can actually discuss VR without salty Sup Forumstards who cab only speak in terms of memes and flops

what are some good stationary seated games? I don't have space in my dorm right now for any real movement.

The star trek game is fun
Elite dangerous is fun, tho gets tedious quick

OP here. That's a good question. I should add some more tags to the content guide for this. Thanks for the indirect feedback.

As for stationary seated games, if you're fine with gamepad, you need to try Herobound: Spirit Champion which is free on the Oculus store, and if you like that, get Chronos.

I Expect You To Die is really good but short.

I played Herobound on GearVR more than a year ago now, but I remember liking it. I'll make a point of checking out Chronos. How's performance? ReVive compatibility?

It performs pretty great. Revive works with it but there's this:

>Like some other games (e.g. Elite Dangerous), you must disable Nvidia Surround or Nvidia driver will crash and reboot the PC

Finally a VR general on Sup Forums, good stuff. I've got some suggestions for the sticky though: the best VR news site by far is roadtovr.com, they just partnered with Eurogamer and they translate important Mogura (biggest japanese VR site iirc) articles as well. They really cover the most shit and are all around a really nice site.

For mobile phone VR vrkommando.com is really amazing. This guy buys literally every mobile VR headset available and reviews them in depth (on his youtube channel) and ranks them. He also does the same with chink PC headsets as well. His site has some neat articles too.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head for now, but I'm sure here's more.

Thanks I'll keep that stuff in mind.

When is the cheaper second gen Vive, Oculus or any other third party will come out?
These freaking thing cost 150% more to buy in my country.
Not even other stuff like CPU or GPU cost me me more than 10% freedumbux.

One freaking year passed and still nothing new.

>cheaper

The second gen Vive/Rift will be just as expensive because they're going to add a shit load more features to it. As time goes on, they will get cheaper. Since 2019 is the year of second gen, expect Holidays 2019 or 2020 to be the time discounts.

Unfortunately I guess you live in a shitty place, so I'm sorry for your loss. Might be certain wireless components requiring a lot of regional checks or regulations that's driving that cost high.
