Decentralized Imgur

New startup claims to be a decentralized way to host and share images. Uses the blockchain to become a sort of decentralized imgur. Thoughts?

Why does there need to be a special blockchain for images when general file storage and hosting like Sia exists?

Is Sia for public files? Looks more like a private dropbox or google drive. Also doesn't look permanent - users could delete the images at any time?

>guys help us mine scamcoins
fuck off

Why not just use IPFS?

there is no need for a blockchain at all, you can easily store the images in a DHT
they just want to ride the cryptocurrency train

There's no incentive for users to actually host the images. This tried the same (github.com/ipfspics/ipfspics-server) but was shut down as author couldn't afford to keep it up (and no one else was hosting images)

Why imgcoin and not just filecoin when that releases from the IPFS team?

Users need to pay Filecoin for storage, and AFAIK it's all for private, encrypted files - nothing's publicly hosted

read their site, it's literally built on IPFS

so anyone knows any legit site with that background effect?

IPFS or BT or something like that will work okay for porn collections people want to share.

I do not see the point in attaching this to some buttcoins or whatever, because now your system requires not just internet bandwidth and storage, but also more significant processing power... doesn't it?

>built on
That's what I'm asking, why not just use IPFS directly, what's the incentive for imgcoin specifically.

This imgcoin sounds exactly the same, buying into the ICO will get you some amount of them then you can spend them for hosting in where peers will earn them from those spending them. Filecoin is legitimately the same thing, files are only encypted if you encypt them, it's not by default, if you wanted to you could spend either of these coins for hosting a hash of an image.

It's not a bad concept by any means, I just feel like it's pretty redundant, especially since neither are actually out yet and this one is third party.

People on /tech/ have been sharing a good amount of javs already and 8v uses it to distribute their games.

I think imgCoin allows for free hosting, I meant - says on the site that anyone can host images free of cost. whereas filecoin users would need to pay for hosting the image?

dropped

if it's not an .ai then I don't wanna go to it

>Host cp for scamcoins
Dangerous game

arguably genius game

Sup Forums already does this though

:(

Nothing new here. From ipfs to zeronet (ridiculously flawed as it was, rip in piss), these have existed forever.

I've considered building this before, it's a pretty simple concept to use some sort of webtorrent protocol incentivized through some cryptocoin. I wonder how they're handling proof of work for actually generating coins. Since they don't actually say anything on that site about it I'm assuming they don't have a great solution to it and it'll probably be centralized botnet garbage

I'm assuming it'll be modeled after filecoin.io. Proof of replication and proof-of-space-time

I've actually been thinking about how to do this for a couple years, I didn't even realise filecoin, sia, maidsafe etc even existed. Looks like I've got some whitepapers to read

Is imgur a botnet?

interested in helping out with imgcoin? I can put you in touch

I might be, what do you guys do differently than filecoin? Their "challenges" method for proof-of-storage seems wasteful, especially if you're hosting a lot of content, so I think there's definitely room for improvement over existing incentivised seeding solutions
