Linux is progressing fast

Do you think by 2020 we will have a real solid alternative to Windows and OS X?

Not if we continue creating more Ubuntu distros with altered Gnome Shell

GNU/Linux has been more than a solid alternative to windows since around 2002.

Ubuntu is already a solid alternative to MacOS and Windows. Yes, some software is not available but it's not Canonical or Linux Foundation's fault, it's the fault of those software creators.
The only reason why Windows is at top is because their monopoly on computers, not because just werkz. Remember how Vista fucked everything up? Remember Windows 7's updater bug? Remember how everyone hated Windows 8's GUI? Remember how Windows 10 fucked up their battery life thanks to telemetry?
Normies made Windows popular and now they're moving to mobile platforms which Microsoft failed. Linux (GNU) will never get support that Windows has, but at least Desktop is slowly dying with Windows. I prefer Android to Windows desu, at least it gives me choice to remove their shitty play store

this guy gets it, and gets them dubs too.
his opinion is valid and the dubs confirm the validity as well

So because the companies that develop those distros dindu nuffin I can use a useless OS and call it a solid alternative to Windows? Big if true, I sure care a lot about who to blame for the uselessness of the OS.

systemd is causing Linux to regress so fast that DOS will be preferable by 2020

>Not if we continue creating more Ubuntu distros with altered Gnome Shell
>not if we continue creating distibutions that actually work
what

Just curious for what purposes do you actually use your computer? Please don't include gaymen, it has nothing to do with usefulness

Nope.

...

Sup Forums is a porn board now

LE INTERNET IS FOR PORN XD

It already is a solid alternative.

I disagree. I've been using Debian since the late 90s and it wasn't very user friendly in 2002. The default installer isn't even user friendly right now. You have to choose the graphical one if you're a normie.

lurk more faggit

young people use phones, people who need PC will use mac for normies, linux for the rest of us, windows will slowly die both in PC and mobile (already) and we will all forgot about the company in 20 years

- image manipulation and drawing (Krita and GIMP both suck ass compared to Photoshop and Illustrator)
- 3D Modeling
- Sometimes I like to cut and render videos
- Word Processing
- Excel
- Microsoft Exchange (Job requirement)

>Mint 18.2
>Kernel 4.8
Why?

>GNU/Linux
it's just Linux you autistic retard.

>Do you think by 2020 we will have a real solid alternative to Windows and OS X?
no. by then, OS X will be a magnitude even better. Windows will become iOS.

for image manipulation, did you tried pinta? It's like paint.net
They recommend blender for 3D, I don't know how much good it is
Pitivi is good for editing videos
Word and Excel both available on LibreOffice, but their Powerpoint alternative has some issues
For Exhange and Krita/GIMP, I have nothing to recommend.
Just use whatever you want, even Windows isn't most used OS anymore which is what matters to me. But teaching normies to remove Play Store will be harder than installing Ubuntu.

Nice trips.
My jaw hit the floor when I saw suse linux /w KDE3 when using windows98se.

Mint 18.2 is built around the 4.8 kernel bub. 18.1 was still on the 4.4 afaik, you can flame it if you want I personally use 4.10 something but i can't tell the fucking difference

OSs barely matter anymore

It's all about cloud apps

its still not solid for video editing or gaming, which is the majority of the enthusiast use case other than coders who are already on loonix. when i upgrade to ryzen i'm running it with windows running via qemu for gaming.

>Linux is progressing fast
>majority of distros are still using xorg

It's always been an alternative. It always innovated and was ahead of windows. Microsoft literally steals everything from Linux and MacOS.

Let me tell the "experience" I had today with fucking Linux. Not going to name the distro as you're going to put all the blame on it, but I've had very similar problems with several other distros.

First I get a kernel panic at boot unless I add the "nomodeset" parameter to the kernel command line. Issue with the AMD open source drivers apparently.

Then I get terrible tearing while doing things like move a window (something Windows 98 already could do perfectly) or scroll through a website. Tried with a compositor like compton: same result. Okay, I'll survive I guess.

Then I tried to listen to music. First PulseAudio decided to fuck my ears by pumping the volume to 100% because of some idiotic default value in the config that automatically changes the master volume to the same value as the application individual volume. Changed the setting (flat-volume or something like that) to 'no'. Okay, it works.

Then I get constant sound clipping and artifacts if I try to use my computer while listening to music. Wonderful.

Also the wifi connection drops randomly. I rage quited, booted my trusty Windows 10, mounted the EFI partition and wiped the linux bootloader, launched Disk Management and removed the linux partitions.

So no, Linux will not be ready by 2020 my friend, especially with people like this that believe Linux is already great and there's a conspiracy behind Windows domination, which is the mindset of most GNU and Linux users and developers and prevents them from seeing the problems that plague the OS. But honestly I don't care, both Windows and OS X work fine and there's no need for Linux on the desktop.

Isn't 4.10 already an option if you open up "view kernels" in the update manager?
>Maybe I see it even though I did a clean install over 18.1

MacOS-like font rendering by default in all major DEs and I'm happy.

>implying it isnt already

normies only use the internet user

linfo.org/kernel_version_numbering.html
>x.x.third-number.fouth-number
The third number indicates the minor revision of the kernel. It is only changed when new features or new drivers are added. The fourth number represents corrections, such as security patches and bug (i.e., error) fixes.

There is no one type of hardware and everything works different on different hardware.
When i typed "amd drivers kernel panic" first result was from Apple Forums, so try to use a not shitty graphic card
Screen tearing is currently a problem with Xfce afaik, it was a problem with Ubuntu MATE 15.10 too but fixed with next release.
Also 100% for headphones are not default either

It just sounds like you have bad drivers for your machine, but even Macs have terrible with your graphic card so i don't really think bashing Linux is a good idea there. All my terrible experiences was with Windows and Linux never let me down. On Windows 7, without drivers, i couldn't connect to internet with a fucking LAN.

>GUI frontends for everything
>bloated DEs
>advancing
Is this what tech illiterates who're scared of the terminal think? Linux has been "real solid" since the shell existed, and if you include driver support from major companies like Intel, then it's also been "real solid" for many years.

>The only reason why Windows is at top is because their monopoly on computers, not because just werkz.
Yeah.... no.
Even if it we buy the "windows is only on top because OEM's" theory, just werks on day-to-day usage is way higher on windows.

1. Pinta - ok for very basic editing, not even intermediate and I'm not even talking about professional work.
2. Pitivi - very basic and very very unstable. Kdenlive is better but it's still no match for any good video editor (vegas, premiere, etc.).
3. LibreOffice is an overrated piece of shit. You can use Writter kinda successfully, maybe your documents even have the same formatting when somebody opens them with MS Word. But Calc is nowhere near Exel, not in usability, not in the amount of features, Google docs are the way to go in Linux
- - -
That's the biggest problem with Linux - unavailability of good software for anybody who's not a Linux developer.

>GUI frontends for everything
>bloated DEs
>Is this what tech illiterates who're scared of the terminal think?
Yeah, nigger.
Who cares about tech that has existed since fucking 1973?
All people need from interaction with computers is inputing esoteric commands to fix their shit in grey-scale terminals

kinda agree, but it's not for just developers at all. Except C# you can get good IDE of every programming language Windows has. Also more people than you think uses their computers to only browse internet (a.k.a normies) people who uses their computer to use for graphic editing (and programming) is actually a minority. Firefox, Chrome works for Linux, which is what 50% of users need. Since all computers come with Windows and giving the fact that normies aren't good with computers makes Linux share stuck. Low marketshare -> no ports of popular software -> low marketshare it's just a non ending loop
more people use linux -> more ports of popular software -> more developers for Linux -> more people use linux
Linux is stable as Windows, but it's just the kernel. There are lots of small applications and everything can go wrong. Drivers, display server, desktop environment, login manager...if linux sold much as windows all of them would have developers and it would just work, at least that's what i claim.

>Linux is stable as Windows, but it's just the kernel.
I've had enough kernel panics from changing DE's and upgrading a Ubuntu 12.04 to know sometimes even that's not true.

Citation requried

>kernel panics from changing DE's
Huh, you're pretty unlucky, just looked it up and there isn't a single person who faced the same issue. Smells fishy.
Note that Kernel panics also happen in MacOS and Windows (BSOD) too.
Just like upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, everything can go wrong when upgrading Ubuntu releases

>Huh, you're pretty unlucky, just looked it up and there isn't a single person who faced the same issue
I don't care if you believe me, I simply used an ubuntu base to play around with interfaces.
Made the whole thing unstable and shat itself.
>Just like upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, everything can go wrong when upgrading Ubuntu releases
Except microsoft was confident enough in their system's upgrade stability to push it out to hundreds of millions of pc's without major issues.

Modern Linux is less advanced and less refined than fucking OS X Snow Leopard which came out in 2009. Shit, even any Windows OS is worse than OS X SL.

>Windows 7
>Released 2009

>Latest version of Debian/Ubuntu
>2017

Wow loonix can into driver support for a LAN card released recently and Windows can't see into the future? WTF Wangblows?

>not going to name the distro as you're going to put all the blame on it
so you're using an unstable rolling-release meme distro (like arch) and complain when there's a regression?
protip: use stable software if you don't want to put up with this shit

>pulseaudio bugs
haven't happened to me

>compton doesn't make the tearing go away
you have to use it like compton --vsync=opengl

It was X220 also same with G530 3000
I didn't even knew LAN needed drivers, i thought it was just plug and play tier thing
"Windows 10 upgrade stuck"
it does seem like a major issue. Also don't you remember how they slapped the upgrade on our faces? maybe you should try ubuntu after 5 years, eh?

Wew, last time I was running Mint on a shitty laptop when I was broke it was ugly as fuck. Now I'm slightly less broke and using Windows 10 which I got by buying a windows 7 key for cheap on a shady site and upgrading using the windows 10 assistive technology trick, I basically got win 10 for €10.

When hardware manufacturers make their drivers fully open source, Linux will thrive.

No, because everyone started using systemd

Linux will be dead in 4 years

As a gamer is Linux basically a no no for me? Been tempted to get Linux for years and am quite enthusiastic about open source software but do worry about complications and overall compatibility

Get a Nogaems system and gtfo Sup Forums

Just use gpu passthrough (tldr: you make a gpu directly accessible to a vm, so you can run a windows vm with like 0.7% performance loss compared to a native windows install).

The botnet will still know your gaming habits but nothing else.

at this moment you can play every single game that's two years old+ with Wine

you can into more recent stuff too, but theyre kinda unstable

steam doesnt even need wine to operate

[citation needed]

A more accurate statement would be:
>Linux is the future. And it always will be.

>do some extremely complicated shit that may or may not work, so you get the same functionality you do on Windows natively

Linuxfags, everyone

It depends on what you want to do for it to be an alternative. I actually like using it but I can see that I wouldn't recommend it for a lot of people. Their heads just aren't wired that way. Windows and OSx were made for these people and they are willing to suffer for it. Just like sitting in a stream of cars not moving for hours to go to a job they don't like to support a house they don't like next to people they don't like all to be doing something they'd rather not. But then there's the sweet sweet camaraderie of shared misery and the bonding at the expense of those who don't fit into the model.

Why should linux be an alternative to this. It's fine just the way it is.

>it's just Linux you autistic retard.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux operating system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

I miss cinnamon.
Replacing it with GNOME was a mistake.

>same functionality
No botnet begs to differ

I have seen hundreads of these threads every year. Aren't you bored of making such threads?

The answer is "maybe" but a more negative maybe than a positive one.

linux and bsd are in drastic need of less fragmentation and proper software support
they both have chance for the next few years

We need to start making more Solus distros.

Linux is already dominant on almost everything other than desktop computing. It even already dominates personal computing, the bigger category of which desktop computing is a part of.

OSX or Windows have no real chance to catch up any time soon

The only question is if in a few years Linux has TOTAL hegemony in basically all remaining minor categories of computing.

Mint is great but I too remember the horror of Debian in the early 00's. I remember trying a Debian live cd without an internet connection when I was on vacation and fug. Got stuck on attatching a root mount point to my ext4 drive on install... Fun times

Snow leopard was the perfect OS...
Fuck change for the sake of change

Ok, I'll say it. It was Debían Stable. But nice try.

>Just like upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7
I can assure you Microsoft does more internal testing than all Linux distros put together.

When will this hegemony happen my friend? When Google switches to Fuchsia because Linux is shit?

No. We won't.

No because Windows is also progressing fast

Lol no.
If Linux can't run everything without problem and be more power efficient then you will not see Linux be a solid alternative

Are you genuinely retarded?

Prove me wrong.

Now that's a blatant lie. I remember those days. Linux was unfriendly, unusable, and sometimes even uninstallable to regular desktops. The average user would get nowhere. Servers were a different story.

Debian has been a solid alternative for a long time in my use, no need for Windows

The early PC gaming market took hold with windows too. It grew with the OS. That's why they have such a hold now.

>Actually work
>No proper file picker for decades
>Removing features in every version

Wine has shit performance (20-50% performance loss on dX titles).
>steam doesn't need wine
But a lot of games on steam are wine ports. Basically anything that first targeted windows and is later "ported" to Linux and Mac is a wine-port. Examples; Rocket League, Terraria.

it's the easiest shit what the fuck are you talking about? you want it to be just one button and a password field to install like Windows? tech illiterates like your parents don't even install the OS themselves so what the fuck are you on about?

the graphical installer is hardly different from the text installer.

anyone with a brain knows the simple reason linux isn't as mainstream as windows is because it doesn't come preinstalled on computers. normies don't install their own operating systems. they wouldn't even know what to do when installing Windows and would end up somehow managing to destroy their computer because the retardation of normies is more powerful than any logic.
