Can we talk about the cancer that is gamers in the GPU market?

youtube.com/watch?v=P_oHQPWRWnQ

>Miners should die, they're inflating the price of cards for my SICK RIG

Are people literally so retarded now that they don't realize that GPUs are used for a ton of things besides gaming? I use four 1080s for AI research, apparently I'm cancer because my legitimate use of computational resources is stopping 12 year olds from playing Battlefield 7 on insane settings. In reality they're the cancer - people who want to use computers for things that are actually beneficial to society have to pay an extra £100 for RGB shit and bloated software """features""" in the driver that don't belong there.

but gamers didnt ruin the market the miners did.

Miners are the ones purchasing GPUs in bulk for cryptomining though. That's not to say that gamers can't be miners, but not all miners are gamers.

>caring this much about what other people think

Here's your (you), grow a pair.

>use graphics processing unit for computer
>get upset at people who want to use graphic processing units for graphics
Gamers aren't angry you're buying GPUs. Gamers are angry you're too much of a kike to buy Quadro and Firepro cards for compute.

>I use four 1080s for AI research

I call bullshit. Post proof. Your opinion is completely invalid for lying.

GPUs are for games.
> Ton of things
B-but I use gpgpu! Good for you user, you are not even a blip in the radar.

Without the gamer market your "AI research" cards wouldn't exist.

Without you their market would continue to thrive. Deal with it faglord, if your work was important you'd be using QUADROs anyways. But you're not important, you just feel like you are.

Nobody "ruined" the market, GPGPU technologies just made it way easier to use GPUs for serious applications, increasing demand. Gamers just have to face the fact that their hobby isn't worth more than other people's business and research.

So buy workstation GPUs instead of gaming GPUs

Don't blame the gamers for buying cards designed, marketed and sold to them if you're the one who wants to use it for a different purpose

BAITED

>Implying mining has less inherent value than gaming.

>I'm just pretending to be retarded! Haha, thanks for the (you)s guys!

>Are people literally so retarded now that they don't realize that GPUs are used for a ton of things besides gaming?
Yeah, and they're sold as Quadros, Teslas and FirePros.

Lolbertarian dipshits are buying gaming GPUs that are binned and have drivers designed and optimized very specifically for gaming work loads. Faggots like you have driven up prices, not those who play vidya games.

Miners are using a shitload of power accomplishing nothing.
They could at least be folding

>Pay several times more for the same product
ok

>Gamers are angry you're too much of a kike to buy Quadro and Firepro cards for compute.
Why would you pay 5x the price when you don't need their features? Just to stop a bunch of aspies from stropping because they can't eat their tendies and play the latest shooting brown people game at max settings? Most institutions have been using Titans or 1080s for the past few years because FP64 and ECC aren't worth it.

>being this economically illiterate
What do you think the gpu market would look like if it wasn't for games?
You think a company like nvidia would exist and would be making 1080s?

If you're doing any data crunching without fault protection, you aren't doing anything you basement dwelling wannabe

>Pretends to be an AI researcher
>Doesn't understand economies of scale
Without gamers, your kike ass would have to pay for quadros, because there would be no cheap gaming cards. You are too small a market for ANYONE to care.

ECC is useless for learning applications because a few errors here and there ultimately have no effect on how the model as a whole converges.

Not him, but it's not uncommon
We built one just last semester

Do you need a strong GPU to program on your shitty-ass arch linux and vim?
Do you need a strong GPU to run any OS?
Do you need a strong GPU for anything but rendering videos and gaming?
No
You're a stupid fuck, OP, please stick to reddit

I know GPUs are used for those projects, I'm calling bullshit on OP actually being involved in one of those projects.

Go to bed, Muhammed.

You should go google Gridcoin, I've been mining it for a couple weeks. It's still cheap too, so if it explodes (and if any coin deserves it should be this one) you can make a serious profit.

For the lazy, Gridcoin is earned by using the BOINC application to allow compute projects to use your resources to complete workloads in pretty much the same fashion as F@H. Gridcoin can only be earned by working on whitelisted projects that are confirmed to be safe.

just because you're fat doesn't mean op is

Shut the fuck up and buy a Quadro you autistic faggot.

Oh wait, you're not going to do that because you're already complaining about the price of consumer cards like a fucking retard. Kill yourself.

I just buy the best advertised and coolest looking shit regardless of what is actually technologically more advanced.

I have a lot of money and i don't like to nit pick about every spec on everything i buy.

I want to get it and go while still making it look bomb.

Got a problem? Give me your lunch money nerd.

Friendly reminder that without gamers, you wouldn't see a card as powerful as a 1080ti at production scales hard enough to bring to market for the prices they are, even with miners

>I'm a retard and I know it
>I don't have the mental capacity for basic details
>I might as well be a woman with how vapid I am
>But I'll pretend to be manly, since willful ignorance and vapidity are classic man traits, right?
closet fag detected

Cheers user, I'm going to jump onto this.
I'm pretty much done mining ETH now, this sounds like a great alternative.

>Being this mad over dumb shit

Fill out a job application fat neck.

>it's another "the only emotion I feel is anger because I was molested as a child" episode
Go shoot up a school, Dylan

The problem of using BOINC as PoW it's that the PoW is completely controlled by the projects whitelisted by the community, it would be extremely easy to ban good projects under the guise of whatever meme SJW shit it's popular nowadays and push your shitty project that can be ASIC'd to mount a 51% attack
FoldingCoin it's even worse since FAH it's entirely controlled by Stanford

>tfw still using Radeon HD 2400 PRO
heh.

Why are you so personally offended by what i do?

Am i doing something wrong poor fag?

pic related

it's you.

>tfw Intel 945G
Eternally shit 1997 tech it's good enough for text

Those cards are made for gaming and marketed towards gamers, yes they can be used for other applications but the main purpose of those cards is gaming.
Even the drivers are optimized for games.
For professionals Nvidia has the Quadro lineup but you're probably too poor to afford one.

NIOGGERs amirite nigger nigger kike nike cash nigger spank a nigger doddal dolan faggot ass munch.

LISTEN HERE YOU COCKSUCKIN BASTARD, IF I CATCH YOU RAPING MY FIDGET SPINNER ONE MORE TIME I WILL AWP U INRL

>Projecting over the internet
It's time to stop, user.

Why do you think I'm offended? You've sworn left and right, your grammar and spelling is degrading, you're showing every sign of seething anger. And you think I'm the one offended? You might be projecting.

Eth and other memecoins will crash, it will be hilarious seeing all these stupid miner fucks lose money

Interesting points. I just fold as a part of a specific team I feel most heavily acquinted with, so I hadn't though about the cryptocurrencies related to these projects too much.

Also wanted to mention that folding for the EVGA team could net you at most $10(?) a month quite easily. That's probably nothing compared to the crypto offerings, but it's an option to keep in mind.

Most will probably not lose too big on it, with many having gained potentially large sums. Of course someone has to be on the receiving end though, but I anticipate that "investors" will be the ones left to hold the bags and suffer.

These cards are meant for gaming and little else.

>it will be hilarious seeing all these stupid miner fucks lose money

Where will it go, do you think? Some of them will lose, others will gain.

you buy quadro for the super high memory configurations/tflops (if titans aren't beating them) on the higher end and the better double precision floating point and some further niche benefits like better wireframe rendering, it's not a clear cut answer as to which is best for professional applications because geforce cards can be just as good as quadros in some cases (especially if you don't need the super high memory configurations) in which case the 'b-but professionals can pay more' sentiment isn't an argument when equivalent quadro cards can easily be 2-4x the cost and not necessarily perform better at all, nobody is paying 2-4x more for a slightly better warranty unless it's absolutely mission critical

Your argument is sound but I think the people crying about people using GPU's for anything but games are underage b& anyway. I do think it's pants on head retarded the volatile nature of crypto is being forced on anyone who wants to buy a mid-range/efficient GPU. This is sub-optimal at best, infuriating at worst.

OP is bitching about gamers buying cards marketed to gamers. Without gamers, those cards wouldn't have a market, and they would all be priced like Quadros.

When you get older you will realize how incredibly small and niche the GPU and gaming market really is.

The only reason GPUs are now powerful enough to use for your "serious productive nerd shit" is gaming.

Also gaming is a $100 billion dollar a year industry.

Get workstation card u faggot

>I'm super upset that I didn't get rich off either crypto boom and wishing ruin upon others is my last chance at some happiness

Really made me think.

Nigger I don't give a shit what you use your GPU for, I hate you for the reason that it's you who's making the cards go up in price. Die in a fire.

gaming cards should be hardware disabled for mining or computation or anything like that.

If it weren't for us those gpus wouldn't exist in the first place you fucking retard. Don't buy gaming cards if you don't want drivers optimized for gaming.

Serious question. Why can't they just make mining card variations sort of like how there are gaming GPUs and workstation GPUs? This way miners will buy the mining versions because they perform considerably better and leave the gaming stock for proper needs.

>Fucking gamers buying gpu's for gaming
>My mining rig, I m-mean my IA research requires more power but gamers keep buying my precious gpu cards.

I don't care what you think, i really wanted to buy an RX580 but fucking wagecucks like you drove the prices out of the orbit for fucking nothing, cryptocoins are a fucking scam.

Mining specific cards have pretty much zero resale value (though I would buy some for folding, if the price was right), which is a big factor for calculating RoI. Basically buying a mining specific card would be too risky for them. Market is also too volatile so no one wants to make those in large enough numbers, which in turn means they can't keep the prices as low as those of regular GPUs.

It's still not too late user.

Your $2000 now could turn into $500,000 in three years.

Microsoft, Cisco, JPMorgan, and various other big names joined crypto in the last few months if you haven't heard.

The train is slowly creeping away from the station and when August 1st comes it'll be too late.

that is actually a completely valid point that I missed

it's true for cpus as well, definitive stats are hard to come by but the steam hardware survey lists intel cpus higher than a base frequency of 3.7ghz, which won't include turbo frequencies or overclock frequencies (i.e., what it says on the box), as being less than 5% of the total steam marketshare, the kicker is that intel have only released a handful of processors with a base frequency above 3.7ghz which from memory are the 4790k, 6700k and 7700k, and maybe a high end laptop chip here and there, if something like intel's current *best* gaming cpu shares 5% of the steam marketshare with a few other cpus it basically means the weaker cpus subsidise the whole market

of course intel hedt chips and xeons (as rare in desktop cpus as they are) fall under that 3.7ghz mark which bumps the numbers up a bit but it's safe to assume that hedt is more niche of a platform than the main core i7 series

>I use four 1080s for AI research, apparently I'm cancer
1080s are barely affected, it's 1060s and 1070s that got the worst of it. You're clearly not the target of the anger, so why are you playing the victim?

Investors are the ones with that risk. For miners, making the cost of hardware and electricity back is piss easy, that's why so many people do it, and that's why the entire fucking system works.

Because mining shitcoins is a fucking meme and the cryptocurrency market crashes every other week. people won't be dumb enough to keep buying into the ponzi schemes in the long term so it would be a dumb business decision. The cryptotards wouldn't even buy the mining gpus because no resale value.

what

>Because mining shitcoins is a fucking meme and the cryptocurrency market crashes every other week.
So? Just because you're not selling it at peak prices doesn't mean a profit can't be made with mining

>I use four 1080s for AI research
i hate to burst your buble but your research will go nowhere and you may as well be using raspberry pi's

the inability to carry over work from 1 project to another groups work prevents any progress. no uniformity in machine language used or methodology

no company is going to pay a team of coders to work for 20 years straight to make ai real. its a pipe dream and there is no work to be found

you have a meme degree and companies that deal in robotics are happy to provide the illusion of interaction which is childs play . they have zero intention of making anything that actually thinks and can talk to you

Doing pointless calculations to earn a fictional currency isn't really business or research

Lol so much angst in one post

Perhaps he was referring to BOINC, F@H and other forms of grid computing with the research part. Super serious stuff of course has GPUs specifically designed for those use cases, but the innovations made in developing both of these strands of cards hopefully carry over.

I mined LTC and Vertcoin back in 2014, but only during this new boom it really hit me how much energy is being wasted in this at the moment. Of course one could argue that lots of energy is also required to maintain the use of traditional currency, but that doesn't mean cryptocurrencies should just stagnate with regards to energy efficiency. Proof of (Useless) Work really needs to die.

yea...what's op...tell us

Didn't happen to Bitcoin. Also, it may be low effort, but the cost of and knowledge for building an effective system is a barrier to entry.

I don't know the numbers, but I wonder how big of a part cheap or free electricity plays in all this. Hasn't a large portion of the hashing power already moved to China because of this?
