Many Japanese people do not consider Japan to be a religious nation; there is a low level of belief, but a very large level of religious participation. Religion is very relevant within Japan, but is not usually considered so by the Japanese.
Shinto is very interesting, but half of the mystery is intentional, I think. Look up Ian Reader, he has some very good book on Japanese religiousity.
