I have one named tiger, another named tiger, also one named tiger, oh, and can't forget about tiger.

Russian cities. Server is Chita, desktop is Kazan.

I name my systems after norse gods, my desktop is Odin, my laptop is Thor, my media server is Freyja and my honeypot is called Loki

Slave

Euclid
Mathematician here

i name mine after military aircraft. desktop is Lightning, laptop 1 is Orion, laptop 2 is Nighthawk, NAS is Aardvark, firewall is PAKFA (because it's fundamentally shit, isn't ever going to work, only exists for bragging rights and maybe the occasional threat, and is probably going to be discarded for some other piece of hardware without anyone ever mentioning it).

fuck i hate pfsense.

AYYE DATS MY SCHOOL BRUH!!

2hu qt3.14s :D

The best scheme is a systematic scheme, and even better to separate public-facing services and infrastructure

environment-application-serviceN.site.as64512.net

- Environment
Separate production (prd), testing (tst) and development (dev), throw in more if needed (acc for acceptance, edu for education, bak for backup etc.)

- Application
Keep machines separated per application. With virtualization it's not that complex and costly to run a separate database server for each environment. Give it a short but clear name, ~6 letters max

- Service
Name the service, again short but clear. Generic names are fine (web instead of nginx, db instead of pgsql) if there is only one type.
If you run multiple types of service, such as PostgreSQL, Redis and Memcached, then name them explicitly (pg, redis, mem for example)

- Site
The site is in the domain, use the airport code or something similar (ams, nyc, etc.)

So for the production environment for the user portal application stack, running in Amsterdam you have

prd-portal-lb-vip.ams.as64512.net - Load balancer VIP, CNAMEd from portal.company.com domain
prd-portal-lb1.ams.as64512.net - Core HAProxy load balancer
prd-portal-lb2.ams.as64512.net - Backup HAProxy load balancer
prd-portal-web1.ams.as64512.net - Web application server 1 (nginx, uWSGI)
prd-portal-web2.ams.as64512.net - Web application server 2 (nginx, uWSGI)
prd-portal-web3.ams.as64512.net - Web application server 3 (nginx, uWSGI)
prd-portal-web4.ams.as64512.net - Web application server 4 (nginx, uWSGI)
prd-portal-pg1.ams.as64512.net - Core PostgreSQL server
prd-portal-pg2.ams.as64512.net - Backup PostgreSQL server

as64512.net is not my domain, but it's how we do it with our ASN. I can give another one for network infrastructure naming in DNS.

So this is what the network map of the sysadmin of moms basement looks like

I am boring and I use the name of the chipset of my motherboard

Are you me? I do the same, either it refers to the chipset or mobo model, or if its a prebuilt like my ThinkCentre is it's just "thinkcentre". Servers get short names based just on what they do.

I name my systems in honor of obamas sons.

Pentesters would fucking love you,

(obsitecode)(scheme)(number)

And keep a csv.

Don't name shit linux12.04-apache2-app1-prod-3

When I used to live with my parents all our major computers were named after the Powerpuff Girls. My dad's was buttercup, sister's was blossom, and I had bubbles. Now I don't really have a scheme but my desktop is still named bubbles after all these years.

[MyName]

he lives in his own place from what I heard

Daughter.

The fuck is this absolute eyesore?

I'm Him

The only thing missing from this graphic are the device roles. Would be interesting to see what he uses all that stuff for.

Trying to get my company's new server stack to be named after Kantai Collection characters. Think they'll notice before they're deployed?

Having worked with 50 y/o men, I'd expect one to just chuckle at this shit.

My server is Jupiter and every other device is one of Jupiter's moons

namingschemes.com/

I've always named my PCs after water-type pokemon, currently using Kyogre. My laptop is Lapras since it's more mobile.

I name them after Nazi Death camps
My PC is Auschwitz, Server is Treblinka

And I live in White House.

feminine names that end with an a
Natacha Valentina Natalia ect

They chuckled as they fucked you in the ass?
Cool.

My desktop is called "compy-386" and my laptop is "lappy-486"

That's cute as fuck

you're ok
don't go to school tomorrow

Security through obscurity is not a valid strategy
It's why you have firewalls, DMZs, IDS/IPS and microsegmentation
Most services aren't publicly accessible, only on a private network secured by a jump host (management VRFs are also useful)

Posting in desktop/*fetch/battlestation generals.

my hostname is ubuntulinux because i'm not creative

Dieselmachine

How did you make this image?

This. I don't have enough computers to get creative with hostnames.

...

SERVER

Couldn't you do both have split view or split horizon or whatever they call it DNS?

pussydestroyer

ec2-18-220-38-72.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com

Right now I have four main devices, each one of four heads of Landia. But I might move to naming them after stages in Kirby games, like maybe Cookie/Raisin/Orange/Wafer/Nutty.

I'm an ancient history nut so I name my computers after historical Greeks and Romans
>Atreus
>Menelaos
>Rubicon (the river Caesar crossed)
>Tully (Anglicized name of Marcus Tullius Cicero)
>Lysander
>Solon
>Tacitus

Some other good names I'm mulling over in the future
>Tarhunta (Hittite storm god)
>Numa
>Africanus

If it's ok with you user I'm going to use some of these

B A D A S S

kennel, botslut for my VPS

>tfw you will NEVER fuck her in the enp0s25

Gensokyo

Then I keep all my terabytes of touhou nonsense on it.

I use liquor brands, but I think my boss already thinks I'm a drunk

Same here
