Matsuzaka is out of the major leagues and is generally remembered negatively. Which is kind of unfair. He did have to very good seasons with the Red Sox and helped them win a World Series. It's just that he was paid so much and did no succeed as he should have.

The Major Leagues are at a higher level than the Japanese leagues. Clearly the players are "into it." The fans are definitely more genki. But I don't know if that's a reason to actually like Japanese baseball more. Like it for what's on the field.

I think that's absolutely a meme, and I have no idea where it comes from. Baseball's popularity at least from a spectator standpoint is as high as it's ever been since the golden age. With injury scares starting to mount with parents about football you might see more kids return to baseball too.
