After the republic formed, Atatürk exchanged populations of Greeks and Turks between Greece and Turkey, but retained the Constantinople Greek population.
At that point it was a matter of wearing them down and forced Turkification. Any non-Turk that fled was denied entry post-1922 iirc, and their property was confiscated by the government. The Patriarchate, with the assistance of Papa Eftim for a while, was eventually subjugated with a puppet Patriarch. Economically, Jews and Orthodox Greeks were harassed so that a Muslim Turkish majority would own all the business and property. Pretty much, any where they could, they made non-Turks suffer. But they waited to do this to the Kurds. They just cut them off and hoped they would assimilate like every other minority without having to use direct force. A rebellion in Dersim (Tunceli) by 1937 marked a failure of that and they've been in military strife with the Kurds ever since.
