Linux found me

Sup Forums

i forgot

Quite pleasant, actually.

I bought a Chromebook because they were cheap. Knew nothing of the steaming pile of shit that was ChromeOS. If I tried to do anything, install anything, it wasn't supported, so I googled how to fix it.

I soon found that by rebooting and pressing some buttons you can go into dev mode, then from dev mode you download a file off github and paste shit into the shell and bam, ubuntu dualboot.

I used ubuntu on that laptop for about a year and a half before buying a normal wangblows computer. Was so used to linux by that time that i installed it on the new one, too.

Disappointing. Went right back to FreeBSD after a month or so.

Free as In Freedom v1, not the stallman edit.

found slackware 3.3 on a BBS took me like a month to download all the images.

Windows 7 didn't like my ssd. I plugged in mint then moved to lubuntu then I use openbox and tint2 on it and I've been pretty damned happy with it. I'll start up an old windows in a vm for my old apps when I need them but everything else is linux.

Some soul was lost with windows and macos that computers used to have and I get all that and more out of linux.

I regret nothing

right behind you, brother.

Had a memory corruption, and Windows could not handle it.
I don't remember why couldn't I just replace the card. Probably because it was obsolete as hell.

Literally in high school some creepy guy gives me a free copy of ubuntu Linux in the parking lot

I bought the PS2 kit.

I don't remember exactly how or why. It was a little over 10 years ago and I'd be about 13-14 or so when I first installed a Debian-based distro called Knoppix. I certainly didn't browse Sup Forums or any kind of tech forum as far as I recall, I never really had any friends that were in to that kind of tech, nobody in my family is in to that kind of tech... it's a real mystery to me. I probably wouldn't even be sure about the number of years, except I have a family home video I edited on Linux that puts a definite minimum date on when I adopted it.

And various forms of Linux have been my primary OS ever since.

Not too bad, really. Why, how did you find it?

My dad gave me a shitty laptop his work friend dumped on him that had kubuntu on it.

One of my classmates in my intro to OOP class talked it up pretty highly. Before that, I know a friend of mine tried to use an early copy of it years before, but he said it was shit, so I decided it was shit. When I heard about it again from a classmate, they told me how Ubuntu made shit easy. Checked it out and it's been an abusive relationship since.

Just read about it on tech enthusiast forums. I was around 10 or 11 and it was Debian, I think. This was around 2000 or so. Hardware support was abysmal at the time, and I remember I spent a few days just getting basic things working. I was into gayming back then so I never stuck with it.

By literally finding an Ubuntu 8.04 CD that my grandmother had and installing it on my Latitude D600...good times

I was trying to breathe new life into an old netbook and stumbled upon puppy linux. From there I installed a shit ton of distros on every device I own, mainly ubuntu on my desktop, xubuntu on my thinkpad and the same puppy setup on the netbook.

i dropped out of school

Windows 8 forced me to know it.

fpbp.

sudo find / -name "*vmlinuz*"

I heard about it from Usenet or a guy who was in college on the other side of the county, I forget which.
t.1.2.13 oldfag

A friend recommended it to me.

Slax Linux Live CD when I was 8.

stfu

Correction, it was RHEL

I think it was Bash.org mentioning Ubuntu.

razetheworld.com back in the day before the admins burnt it to the ground.

My dad.

A game only worked well on the Linux version. I liked it so much I ended up installing Arch after a day of Mint and never looked back.

I got / stole a laptop from my friends garage. a T43 thinkpad i think like 4-6 years ago. came with windows xp, but the fucking wifi wouldnt work. So i installed ubuntu from disk for fun, and then the wifi worked. still dunno why .. . but thank god.

i wanted to use this laptop to look at porn and skype my long distance girlfriend without my parents knowing. (+ it could play gta1 and 2, which was dope) Kept that lappy secret for years.

I eventually ended up using

I made it

Big fan. Also your daughter is a qt 3.14

Some 10 to 15 years ago, when I discovered computers, my dad surprised me with a Linux magazine which had a Mepis installation cdrom. From then on I used Linux on and off until I finally switched 6 years ago formatting my last win7 partition.
Still thankful for that one, dad.

Had heard about it for a while, tried out some distros in Virtualbox, somehow nuked my Windows installation, decided not to bother getting some shady activator for Windows and just got Ubuntu. Had that for three months, then moved on to other distros because I felt like it and now I'm here on Gentoo, which I'll probably stay on unless I run into some major issue I can't solve with it.

My uncle

1994-ish, an amiga magazine had an article talking about it.

Found Ubuntu through Wikipedia in 2009 while reading about Unix and BSD and alternatives to Windows
Discovered that it was much easier to learn Python on Linux than on Windows, so I stuck with it
It's still my daily driver

Windows 8

A friend of my dad's had a PC shop and once gave me a box full of bootleg CDs containing porn games and among them was a Knoppix live CD.

Linux didn't found me yet.
It is everywhere, just running on everything, looking to me as his next target, but i'm not yielding, he will never, ever, EVER get me.
Even if this message goes thru several linux boxes.
I'm behind 7 workbenches and it will never get to me.

Lol, exactly the same shit. Was it CHIP magazine?

My brother was messing arround with it when I was like 10 or something like that and I thought it was pretty cool

I used tor a lot and not just tor browser, but used it for everything and was in that community too. eventually I heard about tails. it was back when it was kind of not tails yet, but it still was. I think around .6 but the earliest disk I have found is .11 so I must have lost/thrown the first cd, which is a shame really

about a month later I think I fucked the disks and found, downloaded from another computer, and installed fedora, used it for a week, got tired of fedora (but really just didn't like gnome) and so I torrented some win 7 cracked iso. around a week after I got windows I think I tried to dualboot some ubuntu derivative but fucked up my disks again, and just reinstalled with the cracked windows and only used tails for a while

nowadays I still use fedora as my main and tails every few weeks or so

>Lend laptop to a 3 year old
>OS not found
Fuck
>Google "Free OS"
>Loonix Mint
Used it for a while before getting Windows 7
I still don't understand how a 3 year old deleted the OS
