The large population of "Ukrainians" in the Canadian midwest came to Canada before Ukraine existed so they were never actually Ukrainian, the identity only spread to them later on. They were Ruthenians and the language they spoke would have been different from modern Ukrainian, for example instead of saying varenyky they said pierohi, they were also all eastern rite catholics.
