The only way to truly understand VR is to experience it (and not only that, but the good headsets with the good software). If you're skeptical, try a live demo and make up your own mind. Or keep reading for a comprehensive overview.

bumping

I fucked up the formatting. Oh well.

Just got home from work to find my rift waiting for me...but i fucked up. My gpu (390x) for some reason only has 1 hdmi out. Is it possible to leave my monitor plugged into the gpu and plug my rift into the onboard port but still use the 390 for rendering?? or do i need to fish out adapters for my monitor to plug into dvi?

Basically the headset needs to directly connect to the GPU HDMI port, and you should not have anything plugged into your motherboard's ports or it may cause bugs. You should get an adapter for your monitor to connect it to the GPU.

Do you not have VGA cable for your monitor?

I PUSH MY FINGERS INTO MY EYES

I'm a flightsimfag and use TrackIr 5. Is there any benefit to the rift or should I wait for the next generation?

If the ONLY thing you want to do is flight sims then personally I'd wait. If you're also interested in other cockpit sims like Elite: Dangerous, it's worth it just for seeing the huge scale of things and being completely immersed in the experience. If you're open to exploring what else VR can do now and have an interest in general gaming then it's definitely worth it. You do need at least like a 1.5x2 meter free space for that other stuff though.

There's also stuff like this in development which is pretty cool.

>$518

I did the same thing. Needed to buy a display port to HDMI adapter

Europe got fucked over

Tech prices in general are pretty much fucked over for everywhere that isn't the US.

People still use VGA?

Same, I have a 1080 and it has 3 displayports, 1 hdmi and 1 dvi. I had to go buy a dvi cable to plug my monitor in

>ordered July 13
>$522
>not shipped

Holy fuck. I'm truly sorry. I got mine for $399.00 with no tax/free shipping, ordered it on the 21st, and it's getting here tomorrow.

>ordered it on the 21st, and it's getting here tomorrow.
Where'd you order it from? I ordered from Oculus a couple weeks ago but they went 5 days without updating me so I cancelled it and bought from somewhere else. (Glad I did because it came with EVE and an Xbox controller, looks like the new bundles don't.)

Newegg, they had the old bundles in stock late Friday night so I ordered one.

>try the oculus
>blurfest.mp4
>pretty much as blurry as phone shit vr
>complete shit

I'm going to save my money and buy a 4k monitor with a big colorspace instead.

So the Rift is ready to buy then? No more 'revisions' down the line?

I keep thinking about those poor cucks who bought the early models who need to pay out the ass again for the better ones.

no doubt they are working on a rift 2, but it may not come out for awhile, same with the vive

Probably best to hold off then I guess.

One of Oculus' department heads said at GDC a few months ago that they want the next gen to be a big step up, and that it's "at least" 2 years away.

On the Vive side, nothing new's been announced other than addons to the current Vive, including a rigid headstrap, like the Rift's, & Knuckles controllers, like the Rift's. It's safe to assume they don't have a new headset immediately on the horizon.

All that's left are third party headsets. Most of them are OSVR which might require modding to work with a lot of games. LG's got a headset and controllers coming out that runs on the same software as the Vive so it should work with any Vive game.

Who knows, but I'm sure it will use the same sensors and controllers.

If there is a next gen hopefully you'll be able to purchase a headset only and get it cheaper if you already have a CV1.

I didn't feel like waiting because it will probably be at least 2 years, and even then I'd probably have to buy a whole new computer since it will do doubt have much higher minimum requirements.

Over the last couple weeks I've gotten to spend a little bit of time tinkering with an Epson Moverio, and I am liking it way more than my time with the PSVR or the rift.

It's basically a standalone Android device/mobile media platform with all the usual bells and whistles, plus a very pleasant display. Easily the nicest wearable tech I've ever experienced. My only wish is that it had a slightly larger FOV. 40-50 degrees would be perfect, I think.

But you know that thing where you are constantly adjusting the headset while wearing a PSVR/rift/vibe? It's gone while wearing the Moverio. You just put it on your face and forget about it. It is soooooooo much better...

and being able to see directly through the display is a great experience. Doesn't really break immersion, especially with dark exterior lenses installed.

Very enthusiastic about this hardware. I would really like to see a composite device - an interior set of see-through displays inside of an exterior full-immersion headset.

the head attachment all look like uncomfortable jokes except ps4vr.

Should I cancel/contact support/do anything? There isn't really any cheaper deals around here, but the wait is fucking killing me

Too bad it has terrible tracking. Nice display, though.

No idea about Europe. Don't you guys have tax included in everything already and almost everything is priced horribly? Newegg is about the only official retailer that doesn't charge tax here. Everywhere else it's like $440

Yeah, tax & shipping is included into that 450yuro scam. Closest I can get is from amazon.fr for 470 yuros, but it says shipping takes 1-2 months

Did you try supersampling?

Does it have a camera? Could be useful.

Yeah, it has a camera.
You get the normal smartphone-style view of whatever is in-frame, and you can shoot photo and video. I have not actually done any of that, so I can't speak for the quality of the results.

>but I'm sure it will use the same sensors and controllers.

No way the next gen Rift will use the same sensors or controllers. Valve has already one upped them with Knuckles. The Oculus sensors have poor FoV compared to Lighthouse Basestations and the new revisions coming out later this year will have even wider FoV.

PSVR is good in most situations but for when you're really being active, the other mechanisms are more stable and so you don't get as much shifting of the headset. PSVR isn't actually that much more comfortable than the others if you adjust the straps right. And if we're also assuming you're not using the Vive's default straps, those actually suck.

When is Knuckles coming out? The one-upmanship of these companies is pretty great, this is what beneficial competition looks like.

thanks for the replies guys, heading out after work today for needed cables.

Bought mine from oculus and it also came with an xbox pad and a weird guitar hero clip on thing....not my sort of game so thats likely never gonna be used.
I ordered direct from oculus and after 8 days of non update on my order i sent an email asking how long i could expect to wait, they responded and updated my order within an hour, took another 6 days for it to get delivered though.

hey anons, poor fag here, i cheaped out and bought a Gear VR w/ controller, because im not too sure if my PC was up to support a headset yet. do you guys have any recommendations for any games?

Haven't used mine for a while as I now have a Rift, but I've heard good things about Augmented Empire.

There's no date yet but it's likely this year unless they decide to do a major revision or to give devs more time for content. They've already sent out dev kits that look near final. There's a good chance it could be November when they release the new Basestations to go along with it.

Are you sure you're wearing it properly? It is blurry when you don't adjust it well. It's not blurry for me at all.

Yeah, because people use VR for the social media platform rather than for gaming. No, you're actually a retard. How is a smart glasses comparable to a virtual headset at all? How you can prefer the early stages of AR over more advanced and developed VR? Really just shows how dumb you are. It's literally AR and you're comparing it with VR headsets. Hololens are so much better than it too, so you're shilling for the worst product possible. Get the fuck out of here you dumb shit.

anyone use a rift on a windows vm with gpu passthrough?

Is the Solus Project good?

There is no final version of anything. Everything always gets better forever. Either you're interested in this thing or you're not, no point in wasting your life away waiting for the next best thing over the horizon to save a couple of bucks. Nothing lasts forever, everything is a rental, everything becomes outdated; especially you right?

Just get it if you want it, if you don't think it's good enough, sell it on ebay.

Yeah, I just tried phone vr for the first time, and I want to know why all the HMD's have shit pixel density and brightness. Where the fuck did they go so wrong that theres all these issues with screen burning, screen dooring, god rays and all this shit. My phone screen looked fucking fine like I would expect an HMD to except for a little loss of fov and shit frames.

So... Vive or Rift?

rift. its half the price and has pretty much the same hardware.

>t. Palmer Luckey

Shit.

whats wrong with the vives straps?
I dont have an issue with them.
if you have an adult males head size then set the top strap to be loos as fuck and undo the bottom straps all the way. put it on your head and then pull the side straps tight at the exact same time and then lock them into place.
the headset will now stay firmly attached to your face.

I hear vive has better head tracking.
also when you buy rift you give a shit load of money to zuckercuck, do you really want to give him more money? he supports degeneracy.

The default Vive straps just aren't as comfortable as PSVR or Rift or the deluxe audio strap.

Vive if money is no object and you don't mind paying a premium for relatively minor improvements. Rift for 99% of the population.

Having got the Rift recently I'm finding the comfort of the hard strap to actually be less comfortable. Over time I can feel the rigidness which isn't a issue with the Vive's soft strap. The problem with the Vive isn't the strap, it's that it's so front heavy in comparison.

Must have a weird head shape. The majority of people prefer the Rift's headstrap. The advantage of having the semi-rigid headstrap is that it balances weight better by hooking onto hump of the back of your head, whereas something more flexible doesn't maintain that hook as well without needing to tighten the headstrap more, which defeats the purpose. This was one of the reasons HTC made the deluxe audio strap the way it is.

Thing is I've used the PSVR and had no issues with the way they do it. For sure the most comfortable out of the three.

Also you don't need to balance weight if the HMD is light enough which is the point I was trying to make. Some of those new Microsoft sponsored HMDs are super light and don't need a rigid strap at all.

Does the rift have a screendoor effect? Are there any that don't?

It has a front facing camera which rift lacks as well. You don't need a hundred USB3.0 ports, and knuckles will be far better than touch.
Slap on TPCast for wireless play on top and it would be a much better experience.
Too bad it would cost an arm and leg more to get it to that point.

The PSVR actually is the most weight balancing mechanism of the 3, so that's why it's the most comfortable, even though it's actually heavier than the Vive.

I think it has more to do with the fact that it puts more pressure on your forehead vs your face. This is part of why I don't think the Rift is that comfortable too. The foam is too narrow and thin so the pressure point is smaller. I'm hoping they sell the new foam they're using in the new bundle since it looks like it might be better.

Yeah the bad thing about the Rift's foam is that it's pretty thin, but so far it seems the overall design has still made the comfort something owners have usually rated higher than the Vive, but lower than the PSVR. The PSVR is in fact better at balancing the weight though, because it is entirely rigid, has the back part angled downwards more in order to hook on the back of your skull more, and more importantly balances the structure solely on the forehead rather than the face, which means it can rely on a surface counteracting the direction of gravity to keep the headset from sliding down, whereas with other headsets with facial interfaces, clamping force is required to keep the headset from sliding down the face. The advantage of having more clamping force however is that the headset doesn't shift around as much if you're moving your head quickly or if you're leaning your head down. In order to achieve as much solidity, you would need to tighten the PSVR strap more which makes it uncomfortable.

The real solution as you suggest is of course to just make the headset lighter, but they're always working on that and what we have is currently are mainly just early adopter pains. The Microsoft headsets will be better and all headsets in the future too should be.

Yes. No.

>Nerd-raging this hard because someone posted AR kit in the VR thread

kys kys bb

Anyone know some good photogrammetry nature stuff, like The Lab's postcards?

360° video is disappointing, and Google Earth looks pretty bad if you go down to human scale.

I'm downloading "Realities" now, but more can't hurt.

There's a bunch of headsets out there that don't have SDE but they have other issues that are even worse.

I'm on the cusp of ordering a Vive or a Rift. The price +free games is pushing me more towards the rift, except The vive looks like it just has way better tech, and more addons coming out, including wireless play.

Rift is a better deal currently. The Vive is more future proofed so it depends if you think you'll buy extras for the Vive like the Knuckle controllers. I'd say if you want one now then buy the Rift, otherwise wait for a new Lighthouse HMD and controllers. At the very least a new HMD will finally force a price cut for the Vive. I wouldn't buy a Vive now unless I found a good deal used.

>sure user a 1070 will be fine for vr
>can barely run euro truck on lowest settings
th-thanks.

>ordered a 1060
am I fucked?

That really shouldn't be happening. Or if it is, then the dev screwed it up.

Apparently it's really badly optimised. The dev's answer was making it run below the headset's native resolution unless you tell it not to in the config file.

I have a 970 and I've ran most everything acceptably, always on low though if there are settings

literally just waiting for gen 2 at that point. This setup will be fine until they have actual gloves and anklets with twice the pixels.

Gloves will never be a thing for mass market. Too many hygienic and fitting issues. Hand tracking will be done with things like the Knuckle controllers or cameras.

A thing many people dont know is that there is no such thing as sparing any slack on gfx cards. I run sli 980ti's and I can't even play a 2 year old game maxed at 4k with frames worth a damn. As it stands with things like 4k and hi-res HMDs current hardware cant really keep up with the demands of 3D applications very well, and thats why most VR games look like cartoon minecraft indie ass I think; though I wish more current games would get adaptation, I think the majority of users are going to be limited to 360 and ps3 level graphics for the immediate future. If a gen 2 headset was released today nobody would even meet the minimum requirements I bet.

On a side note: if youre going to drop an extra $400 on a vive over a rift you'd better already have a rig equivalent to mine or you're a dumbass and your priorities are backwards..
Also, even if i did have an extra 400 to blow on my cherry-picking I'd literally just get 2 Rifts and play with my friends.

hygienic?
So wrong that thats how i know youre wrong about your second point.

You don't understand how gloves that cannot be washed might have hygiene issues?

This desu.

Not really no, since I'm not a 300lb neckbeard that secretes bacon grease from his palms. But also no because I actually wash my hands and shower. But also no because you can probably wash the gloves - like any electronics (eg hmds) - reasonably without damaging them. But also no because people wear gloves that cant/dont get washed every single day and it hasnt posed a doomsday threat against society yet.

But yeah, I'm sure developing multimillion dollar camera hand-tracking software is easier and more cost efficient than just making gloves fit people.

You don't need to be fat to sweat. I don't have the issue myself but I been passed quite a few sweaty controllers and that isn't even with gloves on. Maybe something you'd understand if you had any friends.

Washing the inside of the glove isn't as easy as an HMD, especially when they have trackers on them. Sure you can probably figure out ways to make removable trackers.

Biggest reason is actually that putting on gloves is a chore and an unnecessary one. There's no reason to go that route except for it being an obvious option.

>I'm sure developing multimillion dollar camera hand-tracking software is easier and more cost efficient than just making gloves fit people.

It actually is. Look up what Perception Neuron costs, then look up what a Leap Motion costs.

Reminder to join VRchat this weekend for the weekly anime hugfest

I went ahead and got the rift. I won't have a problem selling it when the upgraded Vive comes out.

Sounds hella gay m8

Just got my Rift today.

First thoughts if anyone is on the fence...

SDE and godrays are pretty annoying, but not dealbreaking. The godrays are a much bigger issue, though... slightly disappointing after trying PSVR and it not having either problem.

Resolution is fine for games, but it's pretty bad for porn (I downloaded an 11GB file so it was good quality). This is the most disappointing thing about it so far, desu.

Tracking while facing the sensors is very good, and the touch controllers are really, really nice.

360 tracking with 2 sensors is way better than I thought as well. I just stuck them both on a shelf about 5.5-6 feet apart, rotated them exactly how the program told me to, and it worked, no ceiling mounts needed. I beat Rick and Morty VR in one session and it only lost track of my hand when I turned around and put the controller right next to my body.

Motion sickness... nothing until I tried Lucky's Tale. Lucky's Tale made me want to puke after 5 minutes, and this is coming from someone who tried RE7 and Far Point on PSVR and felt nothing.

Also, no performance problems so far on my PC with some old ass parts. (Sabertooth P67, i5 2500k, and GTX 970) My motherboard only has 2 USB 3.0 ports, but it the headset works fine on USB2.0 since it only draws 0.3A.

If I wanted to hug something that wasn't there i would just continue to do what I do every night without forking out for VR

>hugging 3D

What, you don't like vr porn where it looks like the girl is fucking 20 feet tall?

some of the games are harder to play than others. Try dreadhalls if you like scary games

The scene I had worked when the chick was riding, but it just was pretty pixelated.

I'll check that game out. I haven't tried any scary games yet, and that one doesn't look like shit. I pirated Rick and Morty because it was a pretty small file size just to try out room scale, and ended up beating the whole thing. Immersion is unreal even in a cartoon game. When they wanted me stick my hand in the washing machine I actually tried leaning over into it.

Fuckin' FedEx delivered it at 7:30PM so I didn't have much time today.

that leap motion is impressive looking though grossly underdeveloped, a good start would be implementing it to a limited space in front of the hmd though.
The big difference here though is that leap is still relatively far off, and even in its best state needing at least some assistance from wearable hardware, and that neuron is here now and works.

And i beg to differ, if you applied yourself at all to the end of gloves being a likely end instead of toward actively denying the obvious path you could easily come up with a myriad of ways that gloves can be made easily washable, not without needing washing at all. But tell you what, ill spend the 300 on the first nice functioning consumer glove controller, and you tell me how that finger tracking is working for you in another 4 years.

best games i've tried so far

Accounting
Audioshield
Climbey
Dreadhalls
Eagle Flight (controversial)
Google Earth
House of the Dying Sun (xbox controller)
Raw Data
Rec Room
Serious Sam VR: The Second Encounter (kind of nauseating, amazing with friends. cross platform vr and standard game)
Superhot VR
Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Also if you are looking at reviews for a game that is compatible in VR, make sure you look for reviews specifically for VR. Obduction, for instance, is a great game but works horribly in VR. Same for the vanishing of ethan carter.

boo hoo, so did Australia.
It's USD$449 here.
That's right USD$449 0 we got charged an extra $50 US Dollars.

>Resolution is fine for games, but it's pretty bad for porn
Make sure you only download 180 videos and not 360 ones. With 360 you end up with half the resolution just so you can have something behind you that you're not going to look at anyway.

Can we talk about real vr in this thread too
I love vuln research, 0day is great

Wireless VR when?

That is literally the only thing keeping me from VR right now. But it seems everyone is more interested in making standalone headsets for god knows what reason...

It already exists, TPcast and a few others have working add-ons for the vive, good luck buying one though

>if youre going to drop an extra $400 on a vive over a rift you'd better already have a rig equivalent to mine or you're a dumbass and your priorities are backwards..
I had a 980 and it ran just fine for all current games on vive.
Only recently upgraded to 1080Ti for better 4K performance.

Well now thats just tax for being stupid

That probably is true. I'm anticipating AAA titles with fully fleshed out graphics engines arriving soon, but who's really to say what will happen. Whats the point of virtual reality if it's not very real-looking though
