So I found this computer lying in the lobby of my building. People mostly do this when they want to get rid of something. From what I can see on the outside (I haven't powered it up) the thing has: >A gtx 750 >16gigs of ram spaced 4x4 on the preferred slot throughout 8 slots >Dual noctua fans on an unknown cpu >a 830 watt power supply >From my understanding a nice motherboard >two drives ~1.75TB both apparently filled with porn (didn't bother to look through them (could be cp)) The boot drive and both sides of the case are the only things missing (looks like it's enclosure was unscrewed and returned to the case), they didn't even bother to take both hard drives (they just slide out) or the two sticks of ram that are exposed
What should I do?
Samuel Reed
Also, the thing's incredibly dusty, has stickers left on different parts (like the person constructing it was really indifferent about branding stickers) and there also is a part of a usb drive that looks partially ripped out of the socket
Oliver Lewis
Start it up and see if it works?
Easton Jackson
>x99 motherboard So at least a 5820k I figure? if I saw it I'd grab it. Clean off the drives.
Jeremiah Cox
Power it on and look at what's in the hard drive.
Jordan Stewart
That's a nice heatsink. Anyway, check the hdds for anything interesting/valuable and make sure to use some data recovery tools too. Afterwards either sell the parts, use then to supplement your own system or set it up as a fallback.
Justin Martin
Like I said, the boot drive was the only thing missing, that aside like it will not post, not even the motherboard lights up Also, here's a picture of the ripped out usb
Liam King
Can probably scrap it for parts, then.
Lincoln Reyes
Try a different PSU
Oliver James
give it back jamal
Wyatt Hill
>What should I do?
install gentoo
Charles Brooks
unplug the broken usb dongle, unplug the psu from wall, pull the battery, disconnect all sata cables. put the battery back in and see if it will post.
No post from there unplug the cpu power cables and see if it will light up and spin the fans. If so the cpu or board is most likely fried. Pull cpu and look for burnt pads or melted pins.
Zachary Hill
Give it back jamal
Landon Nelson
You should give it back, Tyrone.
Lucas Cook
Honestly this is making me think that this was primarily built to be a porn server. 8 ram spots, support for a xeon processor and also the terrabyte+ of porn.
Ryan Davis
But why a 750 and not a 710 then?
Nicholas Cooper
Took too long
Andrew Flores
Return it LaQuan
Jose Edwards
Rip it apart and sell the working parts. Really not that hard. Selling the d15 cooler alone will leave you with some decent pocket change.
Luke Campbell
Looks like there were, at max 6 sata drives connected to the thing. One for the optical drive (still intact) and there are two hard drives still sitting there. The boot drive is missing for sure, that gives three hard drives that this person removed. I'm still not sure why they left two porn drives but removed three others.
Jason Jenkins
Whatever, just take out the parts, format the drives, sell something you don't need
Brody Lewis
those are full of naked children, enjoy Guantánamo
Jordan Sanchez
Probably some illegal shit on the 2 he removed, and also the boot drive in case the system logs showed anything He probably drilled the other 3 drives then dumped the rest of the server where someone else, such as yourself, would find it and distribute the parts for the money, so it couldn't be tracked back to them Although you might be able to track the serial number on the parts if you wanted to actually track down the guy like some gay ass white knight Remove the broken USB and look for burn marks in the port and on the mobo, that might have been a USB Killer so the guy could fry the system
Anthony Hall
The usb itself looks clean Also, I'm fine being a gay ass white knight
Benjamin Gomez
USB might have also been the boot drive, and the guy just broke it off Is the porn on the drives organized? Or does it look like its just been randomly downloaded and stuffed into folders?
Samuel Rodriguez
Some parts are more organised than others. Honestly looks like the person just had a bunch of different torrents working on that thing.
Ayden Roberts
Jayquan PLEASE
Jaxson Thompson
750 will handle 1080p+5.1, might have been a media server
Caleb Gutierrez
So what would be the best way to check the CPU without removing the huge ass fan setup? The thing won't post, so I'm pretty sure I'm shit out of luck.
Joshua Reyes
If it won't post, removing the cooler is the only way to find out. Noctua's mounting hardware is simple as fucking anyway. It's just two big screws on either side.
Jose Hill
Remove the drives and connect them and see whats on them Also check shit like partition tables and file system type as they might give you an idea of what OS it was running
Easton Parker
so you just stole it?
Levi Anderson
Nah, people leave shit they don't want all the time.
Evan Clark
i want to live where you live it that's true because all people leave in my area are shitty mattresses
Sebastian Perez
Craigslist
Joshua Baker
Pretty good find. Worth it for the NH-D15 alone. Too bad the guy mounted it the wrong way.
Ethan Lewis
That's usually what happens. Also it looks like this person was trying to get rid of evidence
Noah Hall
Yeah lol there's even car parks full of cars people just left behind like they just changed their minds and don't want them anymore. It's great for me
Aiden Hughes
So whats on the HDD?
Asher Reyes
About 1.5 terrabites of porn
Josiah Rogers
return it Tyrone
Brandon Gray
Damn, people throw away systems way nicer than what I have all the time, but I just can't seem to come across one.
Best I ever picked up was a prebuilt Core 2 Quad.
Cameron Walker
give it back jamal
Daniel Baker
you should give it back
Gabriel Richardson
Well fire it back up and put it back on the interwebz
Owen Bailey
What kind of Porn is on there?
Tyler Edwards
That's infinitely better than my computer, where could I get something like that?
Levi Peterson
I picked up a trashed Z97 with a 4670K a few weeks back system, some people just trash good stuff.
Colton Perez
Take it apart, see what works and what doesnt. If it doesnt work, its probably the PSU or motherboard. But the CPU is a hard thing to kill, same for ram and hard drives. GPU is probably ok unless it looks visibly damaged.
New mobo + new PSU = cheap shitbox
James Diaz
OP fucking deliver already, get it fixed so we can see what's on it ffs
Jose Jackson
>buy expensive CPU cooler >install it in a way that blocks 50% of its airflow and the other 50% consists mostly of hot air from the GPU
