First time linux user, I am tired of windows 10 bullshit fucking my computer up. so xUbuntu or just Ubuntu. I've never used or installed any distro before.

Ubuntu MATE

Budgie or simply Xubuntu
MATE is very laggy

You should try Manjaro out. It has so much software that can be installed easily in the AUR

Never heard about it. Looks pretty neat. Whats so good about it? better than regular old ubuntu

You're gonna be installing some ubuntu or a derivative like mint so your main concern will be which desktop environment you like. Out of the ubuntus, I liked Linux Mint with Cinnamon.

I was thinking about manjaro. I sometimes lurk Sup Forums but i was mainly thinking ubuntu because i thought it was the biggest/well known distro that wasnt really a meme.

win 10 ltsb.
no updates for me.

Honestly i'm still most comfortable with windows. ive used it my entire life so if there are any distros like beginner type or something i could have some familiarity thatd be great.

I think Cinnamon is the most Windows like desktop environment. It's very familiar, has a start-like menu and a search bar there. Looks pretty nice too.

Not sure if there's an Ubuntu release with Cinnamon but Mint does have one.

Lucky you. Im windows 10 pro and the latest update basically bricked my shit. I was stuck in a endless lockscreen loop and couldn't even restore for some reason. I had to reinstall the previous version. Im sick of the bullshit.

Hmm that sounds pretty nice, thanks user. Would you recommend Mint over ubuntu for a beginner?

Mint is based on Ubuntu, so there's not much difference.

Fedora + KDE + rpmfusion repos (for your patent-encumbered codecs to watch porn and animu). XFCE (which is what comes with Xubuntu) is ok but it's too naked for 2017, still nice for legacy hardware though. You can honestly go with Ubuntu and be good but know that you'll be running the Windows 10 of the Linux world.

Xubuntu on Ubuntu MATE

Alright cool. I think you've won me over. I'll look into installing mint with Cinnamon.

Cinnamon, XFCE, or MATE are good ones to start with.

I'm downloading the newest release 18.2 "Sonya" After it downloads i will verify the verify ISO image like i says too.

Are you interested in programming?

Somewhat. last year was my senior year in highschool and we had to take coding class. I took some java and c++ because that's all we had. It was fun but a bit difficult to learn as it was my first time.

Xubuntu.

Cinnamon is laggy dogshit. Don't bother with it.

>Fedora
>Come on in Mr NSA!

Just go ahead and do manjaro. If you absolutely HAVE to have something ubuntu based then Zorin is really good and has a soft linux learning curve

Well shit, I already have Mint/Cinnamon downloaded.

I have Mint/Cinnamon already downloaded. Is what you suggested better?

Delete it. You'll thank me later. You can find a real distro here

xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

Dude, this is the retard path...switching distros on every person's suggestion. Cinnamon has never been laggy for me.

Just try both on a live CD, see which ones you like better.

Live CD? never heard of it. Ill give it a look up.

The iso you downloaded is probably a live cd. When you create a bootable usb, you can boot straight into the OS and run it in memory and try things out before installing.

I'm just willing to give everyone's suggestion a go since you all know more about this than me.

You're lucky, creators update forced itself on me and now my ssd won't even boot

Yeah thats why im saying fuck windows.

Wait long enough, and you'll find someone that tells you 'x' distro is shit. I'm just saying don't psyche yourself out about it. Realistically, anything Ubuntu or Ubuntu based is fine for your purposes. Trying them out on a live cd first is a good suggestion.

Alright cool. I got a USB right here so ill see how i can make it bootable.

There's a lot of options, that's why it's important to try different distro's before installing. The live CD option is your best bet to try different flavors. Just burn the .iso to a dvd and then boot it. You can try out as many different ones as you like.

>
Yeah i figured as much, I used to lurk here alot so i've seen the fighting that can happen, Im going to make a bootable USB right now.

Use this:
rufus.akeo.ie/

Honestly dude, go with Mint. Stick with it for a while as you get used to using linux. Then go through the unavoidable distro hopping stage until you inevitably get back to whatever debian based distro you feel most comfortable with.

Protip: There is a difference between a distro and a desktop environment. You don't have to download a new ISO to change the aesthetic of your system.

Mint is just awful. Not sure why anyone would want to use it. The developer is an idiot, and their iso's got hacked once. Lots of security issues over there.

Their website got hacked, and the download link was changed to point to a backdoored ISO. That's why you torrent, or at least verify the ISO after you download it. I dunno how you can blame that on Mint when it could happen to any distro.

Mint is pretty insecure, I wouldn't use it

techrepublic.com/article/why-the-linux-mint-hack-is-an-indicator-of-a-larger-problem/

I wasn't aware of those issues. I suggested it because it's very similar to windows which makes it easy to learn the basics of linux. Naturally OP is going to start distro hopping at some point, but when I was learning Mint was a good intro.

I just use debian now.

Oh boy the distro hopping stage. Also thats good to know. I wasnt aware there was a difference, I figured each distro had its own aesthetic but ive seen some of the ricing threads on here and some look absolutely stunning.

I havent verified the ISO yet but i downloaded it off the first American server there was near the top.

As long as you verify it, you're good.

Shit, thats fucking me up but i still kinda want to use it since its similar to windows.

Honestly, Xubuntu is more similar to Windows than Mint. Mint is more similar to a crusty dog turd :^)

Thanks user, Im using it right now,

lol user is it really that bad?

Yes, I used it many times. It sucked every time. i tried to like it, but it was just awful. After the security issues that kept cropping up I just decided to use Xubuntu

Fuck alright, Ill download xubuntu aswell then

Yeah you can make your system look real pretty. The process is basically checking out rice threads and finding out what desktop environment or window manager someone is using it, then finding it in your package manager or on github. If it's in your package manager, you're golden. Otherwise, unless you've got some special unique distro, there'll be clear instructions on how to install the environment on their github or website.

Then it's just a matter of logging out and changing the session from whatever you were on before to your shiny new thing from the login screen.

> Tired of windows 10 fucking your shit up
> Change to Linux
Are you a masochist?

>a distro so well-built that it is used by the NSA themselves
>is upstream for RHEL, a distro used by enterprise fags who demand a secure and reliable distro
>no canonical influence, so their buggy Amazon-funded code stays out of Fedora
Well meme'd.

No, i dont think i am.

Your best bet is to switch to Mac. Linux will fuck you even harder.

If you're going straight from Windows to a Linux distro Xubuntu/XFCE is a must. DEs like MATE and KDE seem a lot less intuitive.

What about Solus? Less breakable

Ubuntu LTS is polished and u don't need to waste time fixing shit.

manjaro is very comfy. Not that mint isn't but the software management done with pacman (used by arch and manjaro) is pretty easy. Most of what you need to get started is going to be already installed, and it's a rolling release, so you have very current updates every week or so.

I started with mint, then zorin, then ubuntu briefly, then debian, then Arch, and finally manjaro. I've tried some others but I like manjaro the best so I recommend it to you.

nah fuck that.

Thats a pretty solid response user. Ill definitely keep manjaro at the forefront for tomorrow when i actually install a distro.

alt f2 is dogshit. i loved MATE, used it for years but it's time to move to Cinnamon or a DE that has a searchable menu. the lack of a good menu in MATE is why i can never go back

Linux Mint Cinnamon edition. All Ubuntus are decent, but MInt is better.

Only if you're a raging homosexual :^)

What the fuck Sup Forums?

Just Ubuntu you can customize it however.

If you think Windows is bad you won't like Linux

If you're new, any of the Ubuntu derivatives are good choice to start off with...

List of distros you can pick from
distrowatch.com/

This can narrow down your choices
distrochooser.de/

If you're too lazy to go browse through distrowatch and too lazy to do the questionnaire in distrochooser, my suggestions are base on what you've said so far about yourserlf...

1) Zorin OS
Whilst I haven't used this personally, it's the most popular distro where the primary aim was to look and feel like Windows.

2) LXLE
Very light distro based on Ubuntu. I installed this distro to revive a very old laptop I got from work that used to run Windows Vista. Gave said laptop to my mum, who prior to this, never owned a computer and rarely used the one she shares with dad... After the initial explanation on how to operate the laptop, I almost never get phone calls from her asking for help and when I do, I don't think using another distro would have helped her. Doesn't look like Windows, but if my mum can use it after a short explanation, I'd say it's pretty intuitive... and yes my mum does use this (or at least emails me to frequently with it...)

>Lying shill detected

If you're coming from a windows background try mint out. posters here complain about it, but it's not windows. It was a good transistion for me.

different user.
dunno man, with Linux I find it easier to fix my problems overall since it is more exposed even if they were more frequent.
With windows everything would work for a good while but when I come across a problem I have to fuck around with the GUI and all the layers upon layers of abstraction which seems a lot more time consuming than just punching a few commands in a terminal.
Command prompt/powershell seems like a verbose pain in the ass to dig into and learn, I find bash far easier to get into especially after troubleshooting regularly.

Not better or worse, it's just a different UI.

Whats so special about linux? Ubuntu is a type of linux system like windows 10 is to windows right?

Windows actually includes Ubuntu now, just use that

Yeah, XFCE is great if you want to introduce windowsfag to screen tearing.

Debian is what ubuntu and all of its flavors are based on. imo its the most stable and updated distro out there. Ive also had great luck using Arch. both are super configurable. im a fan of the wayland interface

I should buy a new controller for my ps2
And a rca to vga adapter

Install Windows 10 creator's update
