I had the "pleasure" in 2015 to have to work on a P4 machine.
Surprisingly it was somewhat possible to be productive. Their setup was: LMDE with the bare minimum installed. Openbox as VM plus Tint2 as taskbar. Total memory usage of the system: 30-50mb.
Currently I am on a similar setup: Mint 18,2, openbox and tint, but tons of background services activated. Total Memory usage: less than 1GB.
