I don't think there's a good answer to that.
Full disk encryption is probably a step in the right direction, it's the first thing I'd do if I had a laptop.
The problem is, if it really is a MBR virus or even BIOS virus, what's stopping the person from booting his own OS from some CD/USB drive and infecting the computer through that?
You could password the BIOS, sure, but then if they REALLY wanted to get you they could always take out the CMOS battery and wait for a while.

Well of course, any disk operation wears on the HDD. They have a limited lifespan. You'll be even worse off if it's actually a SSD.
