Doing anything for smth like WordPress forces you to use GPL (or anything more open). Not doing so, you are violating the licensing.
Using GPL parts of your project forces you to make your own also GPL.
GPL doesn't prohibit anyone from benefiting from your source code, as it allows selling.
This is my POV as a former WP environment developer.
