What's an older laptop that can be used for gaming? I'm trying to get my girlfriend an anniversary gift because her laptop is beginning to shit the bed and her only criteria is that it has to be able to play WoW Legion on either low or medium settings. Her previous computer was a 2012 Latitude running Linux but I think she wants Windows this time around.
My budget is pretty low but I get deep discounts on SSDs and RAM so all I really need is a laptop with a decent CPU and GPU, preferably about 3-5 years old. It runs just fine on my four year old MacBook.
anything with a discreet graphics card (730 gt or better) and 4+ gigs of ram
i recommend 1080p resolution

I would recommend you kill yourself.

Haha so funny Sup Forums epic win :^)

i dont think hes trying to be funny
why not get another older macbook if it works fine?
Adrian Mitchell
T420 or T430 with a NVIDIA OPTIMUS. Upgrade RAM to at least 8GB. If you really care about disk performance, replace the main hard drive with an SSD and then put an additional storage drive in.
Michael Torres
>My budget is pretty low but I get deep discounts on SSDs and RAM so all I really need is a laptop with a decent CPU and GPU Not OP but Apple would solder even an external mouse on them too if they could. I don't think you can change those things anymore when you find better ones for cheap.
Adrian Perez
He just wanted to say that OP's gf shouldn't play Legion because he doesn't like that game.

Because Macbooks are expensive and I think I could get more bang for my buck by getting a PC and replacing the more modular parts with ones from my job.

>why not get another overheating throttling pile of shit?
Joshua Wilson
Is the ASUS GL551JW-DS71 any good? Found one for $500. Has a GTX 960M.
Austin Morgan
You don't even need a GPU for WoW. Just get anything with 4GB RAM, more if you can afford it. Get an SSD for a faster overall system. Get a decent CPU though, i3 or i5 will be enough.
Jonathan Hill
>It runs just fine on my four year old MacBook If you shitbags read the post you'd realize what I was getting at. And a lot of older macbooks already have an ssd with enough ram to run wow. (as the op stated it runs fine on his)
whats your budget? 2012 macbooks are under $500 a lot of times. Comes with an ssd and 8gb ram atleast

>p-p-p-please buy something from my fruit religion that runs 10x slower than any PC for the same price >WHY WONT U BUY A MAC REEEEEEEEE
Get a life mactoddler, lmao.
Angel Rogers
960M is great for that price, as long as you're ok with the rest of the system's condition. At that low, I'm guessing it's a bit beat up.

I pointed out he already knows the macbook can handle it. You really are a waste of space - sad!
Also, can you link me to the benchmarks that prove macs run 10x slower than "any pc"? Oh wait, you can't because it makes zero sense and you're an autistic NEET that will be masturbating to anime porn on his 20 year old IBM shitpad for the rest of his life.
Here's a couple facts: A majority of older macbooks have SSDs and plenty of RAM to run WoW perfectly fine. A majority of older pc laptops for sale do NOT have SSDs and probably have shit for RAM.

Mid-level integrated graphics and a private server. The dumb cow shouldn't be playing retail.
If you're Australian, kill yourself.
Hudson Robinson
Find a single throttlebook with an i7-4700MQ and mid range GPU or better for $400.
Protip: You can't.
You'll be lucky if you can even find anything better than a shitty ULV Air with Intel HD.

Isaac Ross
That literally proves nothing, I can go cherry pick some shitty laptops with high prices too buddy.
Intel HD runs WoW perfectly fine. OP even stated that in the thread. Would make too much sense if you read it though.
>her laptop is beginning to shit the bed So you recommend another shit quality laptop that will fall apart because all of the plastic snap-together bezels?
If you guys wanted to make a valid point, you should of complained about the keyboard, trackpad or something else that is very flawed with the mbp. You all lost this argument. Thanks

>i have never used a macbook >i cant afford a macbook >they are shitty REEEEEEEEEEE

Ideally for WoW you want some sort of dedicated GPU, doesn't necessarily have to be a great one, and the fastest intel CPU you can get with at least 2 cores. WoW is very much dependent on the CPU and almost all of that is 1 thread, it can use a second, or more cores to some degree but it really only needs 2 to run well as long as the single threaded performance is good enough.
Whatever you do DON'T get an old AMD CPU/APU it will be horrible compared to intel for WoW.. Ryzen is decent but anything older stay away.
the main problem with older laptops for running WoW is the GPU is generally absolute trash (assuming it even has a dedicated GPU).. if you get even a low end 10-series laptop it will run WoW like a dream compared to previous generations. If you turn all the eye candy down, blob shadows, disable AA, very low draw distance, anything with a dedicated GPU and a half decent dual core intel will run it well on low-medium
I have a lenovo with i3 3110m ivy bridge cpu, gt720m dedicated gpu and 8gb of ram.
On the dedicated gpu it runs at 50-60fps with all details at low except the resolution but overheats the gpu like hell
on the integrated one (intel hd 4000) runs like crap, got huge fps drops from spell effects even on mythic dungeons.
Blizzard jews increased the graphics quite much in wod/legion and you really need some laptop with a dedicated gpu and a decent cooling for it. Back in the days i could run mists of pandaria at 60fps even on the integrated one, fuck you blizzard.

People need to realize that WoW isn't the same game as it was like 10 years ago. You can't suggest that people get the lowest of low hardware and "it runs perfectly fine". I have both retail WoW and private server vanilla WoW and they are like night and day. I can play vanilla with a laptop everything maxed out but my brand new gaming desktop PC chokes if I max everything in retail WoW. I have to lower some of the settings to make it playable in large graphical situations.
My gaming PC also happens to have Ryzen and Blizzard fell for the Intel compiler scam, making AMD always a worse option if you play Blizzard games.
I have a Dell Vostro 1000 I bought in 2007 and still use. You can get a 1500 with a geforce 8400 on ebay for $75. That should run WoW on lower settings fine.
I had mine running Windows 8 but use Lubuntu now. WoW is linux native nowadays so that's what I'd recommend for older hardware.
Noah Williams
why are you spending money on her
Thomas Edwards
why would you enable AA ever AND on a laptop

Not a shill dude. Looking for something better than the MacBook, considering it cost an arm and a leg (entirely paid for by my university when I was a senior so no hard feelings) but I assume you can get a much better PC for a lower price.

Just get another macbook mate. They are worth it in the long run and probably run Warcraft World better than any laptop even with dedicated GPU.

For reference here is Dalaran on high(not ultra) 1080p on a 4.7ghz 6600k with 3600 ddr4 and a 980ti.
OP your best be to get (or wait a little while longer until they are more available) a laptop with the new GPU from nvidia that replaces the 940mx. It is called the mx150. Should be able to give her a much better experience about $3-400 below the price of a 1050 or 1060 laptop. If you can spend a bit more the Dell Inspiron gaming laptop comes with a 1050 for like $750.
Jose Jones
oops I guess that was before I got my 980ti but it wouldn't even make much of a difference. The game is draw call bottlenecked in cities, raids, and other populated areas. Only once you get into the new legion zones on high or better will you switch to being GPU bottlenecked(which almost always gives a better experience than a cpu bottleneck). The new zones are just as demanding on my GPU as the witcher 3 and often give even less FPS because there is no fuckery pulled for optimization. It just renders the whole everything in your draw distance where as the witcher is awesome and does magic to make a small view distance not seem small.
Jonathan Russell
I have a t420 that used to be able to run league of legends but now it gets lag spikes.
Christian Lee
You can find them cheap enough, so look for a Lenovo ThinkPad W530 or a Dell Precision M4700.
A W540/M4800 will do it better, but they're more expensive.
The other route would be like an Alienware M15X or maybe an Alienware 15 R1, but expect these to be rode hard and put away wet.
I'm sure there are other options and brands, but I don't have any experience with most of them, and can't offer any advice.

Ryder Gutierrez
I've been looking for more or less the same. Someone talked above about the mx150 and that is more or less the same conclusion I got to. That or a good enough CPU that includes an Iris 640 or 650.
If buying second hand, go for the absolute highest tiers of workmanship.
Ian Ward
W530 should run well enough, costs around 250-300 euro second hand, and is a quality computer.
>Legion >not vanilla lmao plebs bet you're stuck playing shitty retail because girls are all dumb and can only play casual trash games and you are whipped so you have to play together keking at you are life m8

Vostro 1000 are great Linux machines Have one myself, the touchpad buttons broke, but everything else is completely fine And they are really easy to take apart
