no

yes

It's a gimmick that is only used by the same sort of people that exclusively used the internet in the early to mid 90s.

Real answer as a Vive owner:

Not in its current state unless you really think VR technology is interesting and want to follow it through development, and have $700 to blow on something that isn't a full fledged gaming platform but more of a really neat toy to show off.

at this point it still isn't worth the high price for how little it gives you. wait a few more years, most likely prices will come down and there will be more content

videos like this almost make me want to get a Daydream View

I just want to be able to watch hentai in public without others knowing. How pixelated is the display? Is it as bad as cell phone headsets?

nope desu

buy a shink shit vr headset and chink 5.5 inch android phone, not buying occulus or vive for that, made me vommit in less than an hour (vr sickness)

I already have a samshit s7 and a gear vr. It looks awful. I was wondering if real vr headsets would be better.

How the fuck you gonna bring desktop VR in public

Yeah those phone VR knock offs are shit compared to desktop VR.

with a gay men laptop

They have vr backpacks that include a PC and a battery.

i imagine it makes porn a lot better. for anything else? definitely not worth it

It is a toy for people with a lot of disposable income.

So if you have the money and interest, sure.

Otherwise, no.

I used a vive recently at my county fair. It isn't pixelated at all.

$500

That's just shit genetics m8

Oculus is $400 for headset, 2 cameras, and controllers. Vive is $600 with the current coupon code. I have both. Oculus is better for seated games (if you like racing and space sims it's especially good) due to the higher resolution. Vive has better, less floaty tracking though so it's fantastic for room scale stuff (everything you *actually* want from VR you'll find in room-scale games). The Oculus is serviceable for room scale though if you have the USB bandwidth to handle it or don't mind dropping $60+ on a good USB card and second camera.

VR is worth it IMO, but this late into the game it's probably better to wait for the next SteamVR offering (LG's SteamVR headset is on the horizon).

You can make your money back by renting them out.

Been renting my vive out for $80/day and it paid for itself already.

Depends on how much you value masturbation

Link to vive coupon? Was gonna buy oculus, but $600 vive falls into my budget.

At this point being seen watching hentai is preferable.

I value it a lot

This

If you have money to burn then why not?
Of course even if you have money it is still better to have the ps4 xbox switch gaming PC first.

I have a Vive and I like it. It's a good way for someone who isn't active to get them moving. It is expensive though but luckily PC hardware is coming down in price for what would be required to run VR. If Etherum miners hadn't bought up all the 480/580s it would be a lot cheaper to get into minus the headset. With Ryzen being as good and as cheap as it is it a 4c8t ryzen pared with a budget board and case save up some for a headset (preferably the vive) and enjoy some of the VR games. Or wait till VR becomes better the choice is really yours

i'm leaning towards oculus because it's only $400, if the vive was a bit cheaper I would go for it.

Not enough early adopters have gotten into this technology that it may take another two years for us to see sub-400 dollar VR, at above 144hz in 4k.

I might be in a hopelessly small minority, but what i really want is VR that has a wider field of view.

I'll buy in when they make a cheaper headset for the sole purpose of watching porn. I don't want to play games or any of that stupid shit, I just want to fap

"Is VR even worth it"

Why would anyone even need to ask such a question?
youtube.com/watch?v=660oel93vZA

Just get a cheap one for your phone then

Phone VR isn't clear enough for my tastes

not that guy but in same boat. i just have a basic android phone i doubt it would look good in vr setup.

Legit question how is cinema mode on the oculus rift? I want to buy one for anime and porn.

my issue with VR its expensive and I can't decide what one I would get, because no matter what I'm going to miss out.

The thing that would save VR and really make it mainstream is to make standards and every game runs on every game system. You just choose the hardware that you like best. the more modular the better.
It will never be that way but its a nice dream.
So unless someone comes out the winner and becomes the mainstream choice to get
I think It will fail

I'm pretty sure that's not the case, i played 3d fps games no problem

Do you get motion sickness?

What. Do you rent out your room as well?
Or do they just take it?

Yeah, and we all saw what happened to the internet. RIP

Well Vive and Oculus are even worse

>two years
Current headsets push 2,5x the pixels of 1080p, 4k would mean nearly tenfold computing power requirement compared to 1080p

>I think It will fail

it already did fail. nobody really cares about VR anymore. the shit was only "hyped" during the oculus development kit days.
then when all the VR stuff was finally released, people realized that shit is way too expensive just to play shooting galleries or "lol so randumXD job simulator-esque games".

I've always seen VR as a kid in movies and thought of it as something that wouldn't ever really exist (same how I thought things like ipads would never come in my lifetime).

So it was worth it to me to get as I thankfully have a decent paying job.

I will say the resolution is poor, and small text is absolutely unredable (even medium sized in front of you is hard to read). But it feels really cool once you get into it, and immersive. Robo recall and I expect you to die have been my fav. The submarine escape pod room and spinning around looking for stuff just felt so right, like I was in that particular room.

Games like robo recall feel awesome standing, but i will admit that flinging your arms around and ducking for an hour is physically exhaustive, you do get a workout.

It feels like those expensive setups at dave and busters and whatnot that you can only play once in a while, but in my own house.

Screen door is there but I dont notice it after a few minutes unless I really try to focus in on it.

Unless you got money to burn I wouldn't recommend it just now, wait until higher res screens are out.

I'm curious at what res it will need to be to be as clear as my 1440p ips, and I'm excited as the prospects of a clear VR.

Lone echo is another one I need to get soon too as I hear nothing but good stuff on it.

Oculus Roomscale with 2 USB 2.0 trackers is more than serviceable, and a third tracker is pretty perfect.

The vive is fucking awesome but its clearly a richfag toy. Currently saving for one and the required pc behind it. Hope the price will drop. You also need a big empty room for the vive. So yeah entry barrier for hq vr is quite high.
Play Waltz of the Wizard for two hours in a lonely room and you will get it. Also highly reccomend Accounting.

4K headsets will likely arrive sooner than GPU's capable of driving them at sufficient framerates, sadly... Even a 1080TI is barely enough to do smooth 4K VR...

the first gen anything is rarely worth it
VR is even worse because of the steep price of the devices that made everyone afraid to do anything more than proof of concepts for streamers to play around
It's worth getting a 40 bucks phone mount for porn though.

It's not worth it if you want to get it for 360 video imo. You don't get a proper sense of scale unless the video is stereoscopic, and in order for it to be stereoscopic it will need to be either side by side or over under 3d, which means you're halving the resolution. Even at 4k this doesn't look great. I think the limit for what looks acceptable is 180 degree 3d videos at 4k. 360 is kind of a waste anyway, especially for porn where you won't ever end up looking behind you.

It's impressive but there's really fuck all to do with it. There are no games that are fun for more than an hour. The fact that the most worthwhile piece of software for it is Google Earth should tell you what you want to know.

t. Vive owner who has had maybe 15 hours of use out of it

Get a decent fucking phone then user, the 1440p screens of most good phones will give you the same pixel density of the Vive/Rift

Mobile VR is worth it, barrier of entry is low and watching stuff on a fake cinema projector beats watching it on the phone itself. It's also fairly easy to get it running in steamvr if you're willing to pay for a good freetrack setup and some psmove wands.

Also porn.

> maybe 15 hours of use out of it

Try torrenting some games, then come back

vr is best as a casual device. having your vision blocked while trying to perform complex physical actions is fucking retarded beyond belief. there's a reason the military dropped it.

the non meme is augmented/mixed or whatever meme name they coin reality. using the real world as your platform has no limitations.

If I'm only interested in VR Porn, is a Smartphone with one of these headstraps just as good as the vive?
Because that's all that interests me tbqh.

Yes. But find the porn before buying.

yes

unless you are poor

Anything else I need to consider? I imagine AMOLED is a good technology for this, as good black values are probably important?
I'll find the porn on /t/

If you get motion sickness from a Vive, you've either got a really shitty computer or bad genetics

Currently it is fun, but yeah if you havn't bought into it yet, wait for the next series to come out.I got the rift during the sale, and while I had fun with it, the games right now are kinda shallow. Gorn was fun, but it's mostly a flail your arms demo - Pavlov is also good yet hard to play because trying to mime holding a rifle with 2 hands makes your aim shit. The game I found myself having most fun with was Arizona Sunshine.

It is nice but I think it isn't worth it for most people until gen 2 comes out with higher resolution, lighter headsets, better controllers, and the (cheaper) gpus to push them.

So late 2018/early 2019. Until then if you have cash to blow on a novel toy go for it. There is fun to be hadd, just don't expect to spend 30+ hours a week for months on end playing it.

Vive and oculus are 1440p per eye? Phones are half that so it will look better, but not by much.

I'll sound like a luddite here but VR is not the answer. Go outside user. There are women and people, trees and daylight out there. Get out of the basement user and join reality. No need for 'virtual reality' unless you are literally an absolute beta without a chance of passing on his genes. In that case go for it.

Go outside user. (coming from computer programmer / guy who isn't an absolute ludd)
