no. what'd be stupid is buying old rack hardware to do it. at least until you're advanced enough to need a managed switch or something. you can learn a lot with VMs and a few spare generic desktops.

Well I bought one of these for cheap of eBay. My original idea was to make it into a pfsence router but I might want to uses it for something different but I cannot think of anything yet.

You don't need a big x86 server. Buy a small Raspberry Pi. You'll have pretty much the same experience, but save on power and noise.

I have one and it's been pretty useful.

You will also learn to compile from sources - some projects do not provide binary packages for arm.

What would you be trying to learn? I have a half-rack of Linux servers in a colo that I haven't been in the physical presence of for a couple of years now. I also have a Mac mini server at home that I do many of the same things on - log in, run some unix commands, configure some Dev apps, etc.

No not at all. Just start small and cheap.

My current setup:
Asrock AD2550-ITX, 2GB RAM
2 x 3TB HDD in RAID-1

The build is passively cooled. It runs:

Debian Jessie
SAMBA
Nextcloud
Webserver
OpenVPN
Transmission
Spotify connect
Duplicity (remote backups to co-worker)
KSP server
Etc...

keep in mind:
Power usage (very important)
Noise (lesser important)
Connection speed/stability

Buy raspberries, install debian, learn with that.

I'm not using it a lot but the idea is that I control the spotify instance on my NAS from my phone. My NAS streams its audio to a raspberry pi connected to an amplifier in the living room over pulse audio. Big draw back is that my gf cannot do shit with this because spotify cannot cope with multiple accounts.

Why not use mopidy on the pi for that?

Kinda. The drives and the ssd take up almost half, and the sdd is honestly optional. The processor is just great for the price, as I am probably going to be using it as a plex server. Drives are the cheapest I can get, somewhat reliable.

PSU is so that I don't have to mess about with picoPSU's, as this particular model has godlike efficiency at low power

Looking at refurb dell and HP servers, it seems the trade in is always power efficiency and performance.

Raid 10 if I'm doing ZFS (existing 3tb drive), but I might just follow the linuxserver.io build with mergerFS and snapraid. My backup situation is good anyhow.

This one was specifically picked for efficiency, this build is focused on that.

Depends on what you're planning to get. A power efficient modern-ish consumer desktop/laptop? Sure, it'll be cheaper.

A rack of old-ish rack servers? It'll be very loud and use a fuck ton of power. It probably won't pay off.

That is if you can actually do what you're planning to do on a VPS.

Actually, I'm learning embedded linux with OpenWRT, the cross-compilation environment is not that intuitive at first. Especially when it comes to dependencies. Compiling for another architecture is not innate...

they were originally cobalt raq3s with dead motherboards - removed the motherboards, replaced the leds and lcds, rewired all the buttons and interfaced them to pis gpio - kept the psu and tapped the 5v line for power, lick of spray paint and some stickers

Get a used server instead of consumer hardware. If you want to practice it has a lot of handy shit like networked managed BIOS and console jack.

at the moment there is just the two in the 1us - Chen is print server and monitors the ups letting all the other servers know if there is an outage and they need to shutdown gracefully - Tewi is internal web server and ftp gateway for my sister

just put the cluster in the server cupboard the other day - currently its a bare docker swarm - coming up with ideas for stuff to put on it

I have no idea how to into cluster. Generally how hard is it to do? Do they all need to be the same hardware, or could I mix up different versions of the Pi? I have like 5 different models lying around and I wouldn't mind doing something with them.

I think docker swarm is ok with different types of node just so long as they are the same architecture, so different types of pi should be ok - not 100% sure on pi3

Is that a joke? I use a Core 2 Duo laptop from 2008 for Plex, 4GB RAM, 256SSD and 1TB HDD over eSATA and it does everything smoothly, i.e. 1080p decoding/encoding. It's dead silent, does not produce heat and takes mere watts of power.

Not that user but try doing it with 4K HEVC with 110+Mbps video streams and see how it goes. That maxes out my dual Xeon E5-2660v2.

Any old PC can be a server. No need to buy one if you're just gonna screw around with it.

Cheap used r710. Can't go wrong. You'll barely be stressing it so fan noise won't be too bad.

Mine hits something like 150watts in operation.

Go for it, simple home server don't need high end parts or expensive case. Plain jane atx case will do just fine, just make sure it got plenty of drive bays and cooling fan mounts. Aside note: Holy shit, my server's drive space is getting eaten up quick but hey it all good, I've got files going back least 20 yrs so it's to be expected plus client backups that go back least one year.

has anyone built a rack mount pfSense box?

for a home firewall all you really need is desktop grade hardware, but its hard to find a configuration to fit inside a 1U rackmount chasis.

I wouldn't bother buying much new if you're just fucking around. Got everything in pic related for free except the 4U chassis and some hdds.

I use a short depth chassis - old fanless atom d510 mini itx board, right angle pci adaptor and 2nd gigabit Ethernet card - along with one of those mini-itx power adaptor with brick

Doing this ended up allowing me to learn almost everything I know today which in turn landed me a full time job with great pay.

If you're budget concious get an atom. Even the cheapest atom is far and beyond a raspi in terms of processing power. It's the difference between "this is a pain because I have to go get a coffee every time I do something" vs "that was fun because I did things and achieved results in a reasonable time frame".

Also I feel the raspi community is a pain in the arse.
