Damn I wanna do that with my ps2

its actually pretty easy, just need the disks, any IDE hard drive, the little adapter for the back of the machine (there are aftermarket ones) and an 8mb memory card

it uses the 8mb memory cart as storage for the boot files and then loads from HDD after installation, just using one of the 2 disks to start the distro
it even has networking, you can shitpost on Sup Forums from it

i only discovered that whole deal recently, i always wondered what the big cavity on the back of the PS2 was for, turns out its for a 3.5" hdd

it also has an HDD LED built into the front of the case that only gets used for this

That's sexy

>any IDE
WD drives don't fit because they used some dumbshit form factor connector piece.

the adapter on the back is adustable to allow for different spacing between the IDE connection and the Molex power connection

For me it has to be the Xbox. Best modding community of any console, emulation community leaves something to be desired though.

Thats a computer

Topkek, kiddies find out about Linux on consoles.

I remember when I was 17 years old and running Linux on the PS2. Good times.

user I was 7 when the PS2 came out
I'm 21 now

TFW I still run gentoox on my Xbox ocassionaly

>install linux
>it can't play games anymore
good going fucktard

>Topkek, kiddies find out about Linux on consoles.
Maybe 15 years ago when I was an 11 year old messing around with it sure, hell I still got a bunch of xbox linux distros burned to CD somewhere, if I cared enough I'd try and get a pic for you.

linux has no games

>take out the memory card with boot files
>put in a disc with a game
Wow, that's so hard.

it can still play games just fine
it just formats a memory card, instead of putting a linux disk in, you put any other game disk in

With the right setup you could actually launch games from the Linux DE and have it restart the box into whatever game you chose. At least on Xbox anyway.

screenfetch pls

>running linux on a 16 year old console is the only way freetards can play games

>not just using a PS2 emulator on a Linux running PS2
retard

my modded xbox was the best way i could watch porn when i was 16 years old without having tu wait 25 hours converting it to a dvd-video on my 1.3g duron

> none of the monitors I have will work with PS2
Still bummed I can't do this

you need a sync on green converter, Cameron Grey on youtube has a video that details ps2 linux on a modern monitor
same thing for a NEXTstation

I'm cheap, I would have only done this if I didn't need to buy anything else

Nostalgia for pointless shit

But this 15 years ago would have been heaven

>playing Gran Turismo at 30 frames per month

What's the point of this, other than for Sony to pay less tax due to claiming that it's a computer?

its for fun user

>Not being a grand autismo

Speaking of that, does anyone have an image of yabasic? I couldn't find it the last time I looked for it.

>I use linux because I'm a hipster faggot

Grow up

this just in, you can install linux on a literal fucking potato!

>ps2 runs ps2 games flawlessly
>ps2 emulator running on ps2 can't even boot a game
Mind=blown

the emulator wouldnt even run since they are written for x86 processors, while the ps2 is MIPS

So run it on an x86 emulator

export PS2="Aw, snap!"

>he doesn't realize 90% of servers worldwide run on linux

How do you write boot files to the memory card? It just shows up as a disk?

Also, does networking work? I know there was an ethernet adapter thing you could buy to attach outside the HDD bay

yes, networking does work. you can use the internet but the software is limited of course

What. I'm 21 and the PS2 came out when I was 3.

They call it a PS2 because when you see it, you turn 2pi radians and walk away.

Dude no way you're 21 now or 3 the then
The thing came out at 2000

But the math checks out.

when it was released the Xbox was the best price/performance PC you could buy.

There was a version of Gentoo that ran on the Xbox. I installed it. So technically I can claim I have actually installed Gentoo.

not sure if bait

>90% of the world is poor
>90% of the world opts for Linux
Really activates the almonds

>Turn 360 degree and walk out
What's so hard to understand?

If you were Three in the year 2000 you're 20 not 21 my man
Then my memory is off
Or I got it later than I thought I did?
The second sounds more probable
Whatever that doesn't change the fact I was too young to care about loonix

Let's say his birthday is June 1. When the PS2 was released, he was 3. A couple months later he turned 4. On June 1, 2017 he turned 21.

But the PS2 cant even play games flawlessly

To be 3 at the 2000 you'd have to be born at 1997
2017 is 20 years away from 1997 user
I was born in 1996 (in fact it was my birthday just a week ago)
I am 21.

Wait I misread
Disregard my faggotry here

>the adapter on the back is adustable
FALSE.

When did you first start going on Sup Forums? I'm 21 as well and I've been here since I was 12

You can also install Gentoo and Debian 5 in the Wii. IIRC, the PSP and the Nintendo DS also had "usable" GNU ports running on it.

That does look aesthetic as fuck.

Don't remember that well
Really went on it on and off until I started properly lurking around 15

on the ps2 and ps3 they cripple their "official" linux distro by making a good chunk of the gpu unaccessible, effectively running them in their own sandbox with limited 2d accel.

on the xbox its a fucking pc compatible arch so no limits there.

Sup Forums is about cutting edge, high-performance compute hardware, not out of date legacy underpowered peasant hardware.

this was cutting edge, high performance hardware in the year 2000

So?

You are a mathematical /genius/.

Running linux on a PS2 using a Dell monitor with an apple keyboard and mouse
and they said that linux hasn't good hardware support

>out of date
>legacy

it wasn't, but it was cheap

Yeah, like those sandy bridge thinkpads. The only think 'cutting edge' most of Sup Forums can afford is their riced Arch Linux install.

bumpin

i bought one a few months back, installed unleashX and put in a large HDD to FTP games to. comfiest 6th gen experience you can have in 2017

Some guy wrote a whole book on how they broke into that thing. It was a great read.

>Released By Sony

To dodge taxes in britain since anything that can boot into a proper OS is considered a learning tool and gets tax breaks.
Sony did it briefly with the PS3 until they removed it because muh piracy and got sued

I always heard they did it because they were selling it at a loss during its launch because they would make the money back with the license fee from the games and people were buying them up to use as cheap cluster omputers so Sony removed that since they were losing money from those people obviously not buying games

Post them. They're fairly hard to find.

>OtherOS
I heard that the EC's competition referee saw through that ploy and there was therefore no reason to continue putting any effort into it.

i had one of those keyboards
stupid thing has a power button right in between "enter" and "delete"

PSP had way more usable GNU ports, DS just have proofs of concept just like iPod's did
Pretty much along with classy Sony proprietary and DRM sheanigans
The first gens PS3's are still the only way to rip SACD's losslessly

>pcsx2 in an x86 linux chroot running in qemu-user, running in mips linux on a ps2

Any resources on making a ps2 cluster? I know this thing exists, and that Saddam Hussein used ps2 clusters to guide missiles.

Seems like it be fun to make, and also you can buy old ps2's for $20 or less. Also more tantalizing would be using ps2 slim's.

Who PS3 here? (old as h*ck screenshot)

>those days of switching to modchip mode, uploading some Halo 2 modded maps, switching to non-modded mode and then playing your modded maps in matchmaking
Felt so fucking advanced at the time.

The different BIOSes you could flash to the modchips all had their own unique features too, was neat as fuck. Later learned the modded BIOSes were actually built from leaked kernel source code, no wonder they worked so well.

>no GPU

ghostbin.com/paste/kqxwq

There is a driver for it, I have the repo for it backed up if you want a copy. I never used it myself.

I already got it, maybe someone else can use it though.

That's the widely-shared leak btw, there's a way bigger leak that has tons of docs + drivers + dashboard apps and shit, and is where I made the xbox4044originals.rar from years ago, but I don't think that ever leaked out that much (someone really should get on that though, afaik the emu devs only ever had access to the public leak, the nvidia drivers/specs in the full thing could probably help them out a lot)

interesting
also, you can post ipfs hashes here, just put a newline part way through it

I've been meaning to contact team4ch about it but I don't know if anyone reads admin@Sup Forums.org anymore. Even the gateway links trip the spamfilter now, which they didn't before and the hashes used to be fine too but now they're not.

making a machine that plays games into a machine that can't play games what's the use

I asked that myself when I upgraded 98SE to XP and all my shit broke.

Why don't you leak it yourself? For all you know you might be the only one that still has the files.

Yup, it's pretty much the easiest to mod as well. I am thinking of buying one (from a friend for $30) so that I can fuck around with it.

How easy was the HDD swapping process?

CHECKED

Eh I don't really mind talking about this stuff but I don't want to be the source of any leaks, I only released that xbox4044originals.rar because I noticed the public leak had a bunch of modded files that weren't original (IIRC the public leak was actually code for one of the modded BIOSes, I'd guess the original guy with the leak probably gave stripped down copies to some of the top Xbox modders/groups for them to work on stuff, and then one of those guys ended up sharing their codebase around)

I know a lot of the X360 modding community has the same complete leak anyway, so I'm sure it'll be traded around and leaked eventually.

Anyway speaking of code leaks, I have it on good authority that the entire Xbox Live server codebase actually leaked back in 2012/2013, see: maxconsole.com/threads/exclusive-when-and-how-xbox-live-was-hacked.22462/
That and people talking about a 2012 leak on assembler recently.

There's actually people working on trying to emulate XBL servers for the original Xbox, that code could probably help if someone ever decides to go and leak it publicly.

Not that user but I would love any of these files for posterity/archiving if anyone is willing to post any of them.

yes and?

WTF

There's not much practical use for them so they're cheap. They take up a lot of space too.

sony only did this because it was cheaper to import computers through customs than video games. master merchant work.

I think I just witnessed history
