There isn't one. Sure, there's a SATA-to-USB adapter, but it's on the mainboard as well.

Look for the datasheet for your HDD controller, try to bypass a USB bridge by soldering directly to a SATA controller.

Op, most likely the partition table got corrupted so the files are stuck on the drive.

Open CMD as an admin and use the following command:
chkdsk /f h: (h: being the drive letter of your broken drive)
