If someone got confused when I pronounced LaTeX the same as latex gloves, I would reconsider their intelligence and likely not work with them in the future. Plus no one can ridicule you if you never work with anyone.

It is not about confusing people, it is about looking stupid in front of coworkers.
I worked with a guy who pronounced finite and infinite the same way, it wasn't confusing, we just made fun of him until he corrected his behavior.
There are a ton of words you read but never hear someone speak.
It is not mean, it is just a way to correct peoples behavior

I suppose La(h)-Tex would be the most likely way it should be pronounced, however, Lay-Tex rolls off the tongue nicer than La-Tex.
