Because, dumdums, it was his way of strong-arming some progressive beliefs into the Democratic platform. Whether or not that will come to fruition is yet to be seen, but I think he was more concerned with implanting some progressivism into the party and actually having something to show for his last year of campaigning.
This is coming from someone who voted for Bernie in the primary and won't vote for Clinton or Trump in the general, but it's not hard to see why he did what he did, and it's understandable. Progressivism has made a lot of strides in America, and that's what the real victory is about, not rallying behind some figurehead and treating him like a messiah.
