youtube.com/watch?v=f9WVTb83KUM

Yes, watch this guy, he pronounces them perfectly: youtube.com/watch?v=Uip_bjVdZfk

There are 6 tones, 1 (thanh ngang) you already use. Hỏi and ngã are pronounced the same in the South, so, here you go.

Cám ơn Vietnonymous

V-pop sucks tho, although it has some bright point:

What's the point of learning Vietnamese when Chinese is better in every single aspect, historically, culturally, and is also 100 times more relevant and actually sought after by big companies?

Yes, it is
A lot, sometimes they don't use classifiers, sometimes they use classifiers too much. They don't know how to mark tones. And they don't know the right way to use pronouns.

And Viets don't say "xin chào" in real life, just "chào". If you talked to strangers, put on "xin lỗi" (excuse me, sorry) first.

If you want a useful language, just learn English. Most people learns languages for fun, me included.
Đó không phải tôi. Should odd af tho.

Also, SOME FOLKS ARE BORN...

thanks m8, I'll keep that in mind

>tfw the only user that wants to learn

you're welcome m8

Here you guys go.
youtube.com/watch?v=iCqOIdv2GGs

I've been meaning to learn Vietnamese for a few months now.
I've got some books and have started on the duolingo course.
Do you have a skype account or a telegram account that I could add you on? I'd love to perhaps practice with you one day. Not many vietnamese posters on Sup Forums, so there's no general for me to shitpost in

You can go to /asean/, i will notice. I don't have skype.

Every time I go onto /asean/ I never see any vietnamese flags ;___;
Just a bunch of filipinos and indonesias shitposting

Also, side question, how hard was it for you to learn English?
I wrote my final essay for my syntax subject (I study linguistics) on the verb system in Vietnamese, and it seems all incredibly simple grammatically.
Which makes me wonder, is English hard to learn for native Viet speakers?

I don't post on /asean/ because I don't like weeboo stuffs.

Viets are normally very bad at English. I used to be one of the few students who are decent at English in my class. Structurely it's pretty simple, and does not use much pronouns.

Pronouns in vietnamese is still something I'm getting used to.
I remember reading in a book that apparently some people in Vietnam tend to use a person's name rather than the pronoun, even in scenarios where English wouldn't.
For example replacing "you" with their name.
How common is this?

Sorry,Its not a questinon about lang,do you have the indentity as East Asian?or South East Asian stronger?

No matter how bad the Vietnamese are at English, they can at least take solace that they're leagues better than the Japanese.

Very common. Everybody use it. Especially girls and children.

SEAn with Chinese culture personally.

What is league?
i believe its the common opinion

Gatsby is that you?

How do I ask for a prostitute without a dick?

No girl has dick here, it is not Thailand (and even in Thai i don't think it common). And if you did that wrongly, you might get POLICE'D.

Here is a conversation:

Tim: Hey Matt, what is Matt doing, Tim is finding Matt.
Matt: Oh, Matt feels sick, could Tim call Matt's mom?

is your surname nguyen?

Not, i'm Hoàng.

Where in Vietnam are you from?

The South.

who are your most common tourists?

are you hmong?

hahahah, that seems so funny in English, but I'm sure translated back to Vietnamese, it wouldn't appear strange at all to you
Are you from the north or the south?
Also, any chance I could post a sentence or two for you to record on vocaroo so I can analyse pronunciation?

HCMC?

Amuricans. I'm Viet (or Kinh, to be more specifically).

Is Vietnamese tonal? I was wondering when trying to order some food from a restaurant yesterday.

rate these

yes it is
6 tones (5 in the south)

That's some autistic shit user

Yeah, the lady who runs it was a nice qt and you know how it goes.

Something that is not very nice, full of curse words and things like that.

Also it sounds like Google Translate?

Maybe i will start a Weekly Vietnam thread this weekend.

Now i need to sleep.

he's a shitty troll

Ngủ ngon senpai

Why are so many vietnamese people named nguyen?

Of course it's Google translate.
The google translate every you/your to bạn which literally friend.
If someone really insult you they and know about vietnamese, they will use mày instead.
When the Nguyen Dynasty rule.
Legend say.
If you are a criminal and also a Nguyen, they spare u.
If you are a peasant and also a Nguyen, you become middle class.
If you are a middle class and also a Nguyen, you become high class.
If you are a high class and also a Nguyen, you can persecute other non Nguyen high class and become even higher with free poppy.
Nguyen is Win.

>tfw Nguyen is one of the most popular names in Australia even though Vietnamese are a relatively small minority

Your language sounds like truntung truntung in my ears. How does Indonesian sounds to you?

fuck i wanna learn

Sound like ailen with ting tang tong.
At least you not become joke with name literally mean high some dick and fart some folk in cambodia language.

So like Mohammed or Goldstein.

Except that the people with Nguyen surname is really successful in the Vietnamese while the Muhammad often just Prophet wannabe and almost of them not at famous at people not named muhammad in muslim.

Viets best immigrants! :3

Here's a Viet-inspired Polish song, we like you guys over here.
How to say "Hello" and "Thank you" in Vietnamese?

The phrase "leagues better than" or "leagues ahead of" simply means better. In this case, the filthy baka-gaijin meant to say that Vietnamese people tend to speak English much better than Japanese.
A league is a unit of distance meaning about 5.6 kilometers, so it's similar to saying "miles better than" or "lightyears ahead of", or even just "leaps and bounds". Distance and height are rather common in English idioms meant to compare how good two things are.

noone wants to learn your 3rd world shit language
also stop coming to my country.

how do I say "niggers of asia"

This is very important

I want to go to Vietnam since that Top Gear episode.

There's a shitload of Nguyens in the US as well.

Chào and Cám ơn.
It's already a miracle that Poland Nationalism doesn't want to kick the largest minorities out of Poland.
Funny that i did have Family in Norway, they say that the place really boring and depressed and they just go fishing all day for entertainment, they rich enough to have a ship though.
Kins say about missing noisy, stinky home.
So you don't have to worry that me come to you place.
I still think it's a cool place, not just for living the rest of my life in a boring place.
Mọi (savager), Vietnamese often say it to any people that darker or ugly even same Kins.
40% of Vietnamese are Nguyen.
Vietnamese Diaspora 50%<
Nguyen love travel for fortune.
It's in their blood.

What can you tell me about the surname 'Luong'?

Working money.
Literally.

Plis translate "Choke me daddy"

in my experience you don't even use chao, you guys just say hello

Iktfb, also Anthony Bourdain and Martin Yan

How many languages do you know?

>It's already a miracle that Poland Nationalism doesn't want to kick the largest minorities out of Poland.
Is that how your media portrays Poland?
muslim rapefugees =/= hard-working Asians
>Chào and Cám ơn.
How do you read that?
Like Italian Ciao and English Come on?

Is this some tone of "o"?

>Like Italian Ciao and English Come on?
Not, but close enough.
Just Vietnamese, English and some French.

I know the pronunciation, but i could not explain to you, because i don't know how.
Learning a language has nothing with its country you know. I even consider learning some Welsh, is it relevant or useful at all? No.

I can't get over how horribly repugnant Vietnamese sounds as a spoken language and SEA languages in general. Goddamn what are these fucking unholy sounds?
The only tonal language that is actually palatable is Cantonese and even that's stretching it.

When you sing, the sound become somewhat tonal. So i think that tonal languages is like you sing while talking simultaneously with no melody.

Why are you comparing Vietnamese and SEA languages with singing? They sound nothing like singing at all, more like a fucking horrible assault to your ears. Fucking hell, your language needs to Sound better or die in a fine.

fire *

>die in a fine.
lel

Because it is, singing doesn't mean to be beautiful you know, just like language.

Anyone who speaks the language should be fined, and then die.

Neat. When i were young, i thought English speakers talk way too fast, and sound like gibberish.

nghot nghot phout phout?

are the clothes factories located at the north or the south side of vietnam?
pls tell me cities

Both, but i would say the South, Saigon to be more specifically).

What's a good Vietnamese text to speech program or site? I can understand spoken Vietnamese, but written Vietnamese gives me a lot of trouble.

I don't want any apps and only this site was somewhat decent: vnspeech.com/

viet and thai sounds the same to me.
are they related?
any borrowed words?

Viet and Thai are in different language families, but they do sound familiar because they share some tones. Thai like a very strange language (not ching chong ping pong like the memesters said) with Vietnamese alike pronunciation.

What's your politics like? How about economy?

vietnamese is hell

the tones are even harder than in chinese

and the grammar is hell (well not Czech-level hell, but it isn't easy either)

but the girls are pretty, so it's worth it

also the country is 10/10

except for Hoi An

Why does every tourist guide tell to go to Hoi An, it's the worst place ever

Also Nha Trang sucks, fucking Russians

Viets are the hottest South east asians but has the ugliest sounding language by far along with thai.

>Also what do you think about your ASEAN neighbours?

>politics
Pseudo-communism, actually communism'd capitalism.
Growing, but the currency is a endless drop.
We are cool with them, almost all SEA countries hate China.
At least it doesn't have genders lol.
