Something's seriously wrong when a single company has this amount of control over the Internet can can disconnect a whole country.
>Google Takes Blame For Internet Disruption Across Japan >Google on Saturday accepted responsibility for the widespread internet disruptions Japan experienced the previous day. The search engine giant apologized for the trouble, saying it was caused by an errant network setting that was corrected within eight minutes of its discovery. Google did not say whether human error or a technical malfunction was to blame. The disrupted services used internet connections provided by NTT Communications Corp. and KDDI Corp., both of which said Friday that the issues were caused by a change in the flow of data traffic. theregister.co.uk/2017/08/27/google_routing_blunder_sent_japans_internet_dark/
How do we kill stop this from happening in the future? How do we kill this evil company?
>>How do we kill stop this from happening in the future? Well basically you can't, so long as BGP is in use. It's a very old protocol that dates from the 70s when the internet was small enough that you could print out a list of all the institutions on it on a few pages. They were mostly universities, with some government/defense agencies and a couple of computer manufacturers. Everyone knew each other and trusted each other, so BGP is completely unauthenticated. Whatever you say, other BGP routers will trust.
This is recognized as a problem, and its thought that this has been done maliciously before (either to cause a DoS or to route traffic through areas on the network where it can be intercepted), but nothing's been done about it. Implementing a major new protocol would make the IPv4 -> IPv6 stuff look like childs play, and would run a risk of lots of huge disruptions like this happening on a regular basis.

japs probably didn't even notice the outage because they were too busy sharing cat pictures via fax
Henry Lopez
Do you think in the future some big fat fish will tear down google?
Chase Edwards
Google's has more money than all of the rich cats in Japan have combined Not to forget to mention if they have this sort of power over the internet, it could incidentally become a reoccurring issue.
Mason Thompson
Imagine a dark future in which Internet is not called Internet, it's just called "Google".
As in, everything is in Google. You get a google connection. You share files over Google. You play games online over Google. You have Google browsers.
Someone's wrong on the Google? Time to fight back.
Owen White
It would more likely be called AWS.
Zachary Torres
We've discussed this before when it has happened to other countries. The ISPs absolutely should be checking advertised routes are legitimate instead of trusting them in blind faith.
Juan Torres
you have no clue how the internet works the protocol to route between different sections of the internet is OLD and works on a gentlemens agreement if you advertise that your route is the shortest, cheapest or both you get the traffic except if there is a opposing rule. so if google shouts that they got the cheapest route or any other company for that matter they get the traffic and since google doesnt route traffic #inthetrashitgoes
please think about getting some basic networking education or read more on the topic before you go all SJW on such shit

Then don't install it, kid.
Jaxon Smith
This isn't true, there's definitely authentication in BGP for the AS to speak to each other.
William Green
AWS is garbage So is Azure
Dylan Long
that's what they get for their misogynist cartoons

In the future I can see a decentralized internet with countries controlling their own traffic and peering with others as it sees fit.
Kayden Powell
Google is a private company so they have the right to choose which countries to disrupt and not disrupt.

what does this script do?
Gavin White
It reroutes your internet data through the Google pipelines forcing them to see what you browse, ie asserting dominance over Google. Essentially cucking them by giving them your data before they can take it from you. Also known as e-cucking.
