pulseaudio might be okay-ish now, but back when it was forced into every major linux distro (because lol redhat) it was far from ready, and in most cases worse/more buggy than alsa (which is quite an achievement desu).
it "only" took 3-4 years and most sound cards being reduced to intel/nvidia/amd to make it work. arguably better sound systems at the time (and possibly today), such as oss and jack, got shadowed because of it, and today are on life support.
looking back now, this looks really similar to how systemd is being forced down everyones throat.

i use pulseaudio for linux, it works, on the other hand, alsa doesn't really work, OSS for BSD is cool tho, but drivers for BSD just kill me.
