Can instant messengers be popular again?

Can instant messengers be popular again?

No
We live in a decade where everyone doesn't care about privacy and wants to live on the internet which is a bad idea entirely so people just use facebook so they can integrate their real life personalities on some faggot's servers so they can make a profile of them and show them ads based on their searches
If you want to use a good encrypted p2p instant messenger use Tox because it's much more simpler

Anyone I care about communicates with Wire (both with me and with each other). I don't know if it will be "popular," per say, but if everyone I know can figure out how to use it, then that's good enough for me.

It's called facebook

SMS?

>If you want to use a good encrypted p2p instant messenger use Tox because it's much more simpler
It's really gross to have to use stuff like that where offline messaging for example is impossible.

>whatsapp
>facebook messenger
>telegram
>kik
>discord
>skype
>many others

WTF OP, they are still popular.

How does Wire compare to XMPP + OMEMO? I've been using the latter and am wondering if it would be worth it to switch (iFags don't have a decent XMPP client and desktop doesn't really either, also making an XMPP account is apparently hard/scary).

>making an XMPP account is apparently hard/scary
Normies need to be fucking euthanized.

>hurr people engage in social activities on the internet using ready made services instead of autistically perfecting the TorVPN config in Kali on an encrypted USB stick to conceal their anime and porn preferences from NSA and CIA and (((them))) while never sharing a single photo of thenselves with any of the friends they don't have
what absolute plebs

hah, its as easy as making any other account. also of youre looking for a good desktop client, i can recommend profanity, it works really well for me at least

Couldn't tell you. I know a bunch of people were using WhatsApp/facebook messenger, so I searched for something equally easy to use, as versatile as Skype (desktop app easy to find, phone apps on app store). Wire was the first one to fit the bill that offered E2E encryption, Open Source code, didn't require a phone number, and fingerprint verification that was easy for tech illiterate people to use.

>wire requires gapps to function
into the trash it goes

What is gapps?

google apps

wire immediately bitches about google play services not being installed when you open it and closes

stick with the f-droid version of conversations.im

...

Ah. Yeah. They are working on an f-droid version. That said, they don't seem to be in a HUGE hurry to get it out.

I'm using telegram, it's not perfect, security-wise but it's good enough and it has all the amenities of a modern messaging service

99.9% of Germans use Whatsapp IM everyday. Its by far the most used form of electronic communication here. Facebook, SMS and so on isn't as popular here.

actually, it doesn't need gapps anymore. if it doesn't find any, it'll just use websockets

whatsapp for friends
viber for other friends
discord for online friends
telegram for other online friends
