Everything else aside, which package manager is the best?

they all do pretty much the same thing with minor differences, don't they
what a pointless discussion to have
portage
apt is objectively the worst package manager, seeing that yum is dead.

never heard of it

GEE YOU KNOW WHAT I LOVE
COMPILING ALL OF MY PACKAGES FROM SOURCE
GOD DAMN DO I LOVE THAT
GENTOO IS SO GOOD
t. optimizationlet
Get raped and kill yourself, you retarded fucking faggot sack of nigger shit with down syndrome.
>javascript is the only language I know
FTFY
with the exception of guix/nix, anyone who writes another package manager in 2017 needs to be shot in the head
ur mum manages my package pretty well lmao. apt really tho
DNF
apt because
>not written from python
>more official packages than any other package manager
>apt autoremove
>only takes 3 letters to type
Second place is xbps, followed by pacman
Sorcery is beyond every other package manager sourcemage.org
Anything that is not apt related
Zypper
Can someone explain why apt is so bad? Seems to work fine for me

You don't need any fancy 'package managers' - just get the exe's from download.com and you are golden.
where's the source code?
right.
Anything that isn't portage.
you answered your own question on pic related
FedEx.
They can a package half way around the world in 2 business days.
Wrong.
They couldn't get a package 145t in 2 weeks.
Wrong.
They'll lose your shit and take thrice as long as FedEx.
Windows has several package managers...
Windows Update is probably the worst package management system to ever exist in any universe.
Especially the new version for Win8/10.
SCM is also pretty fucking garbage, considering how much it costs to get the supporting infrastructure setup (legally)
1. apt/aptitude/apt-get
2. xbps
Power gap
3. pacman/yaourt
Power gap
Everything else
Literally every answer that's not pacman is objectively wrong
pacaur + pac
opkg
over the next 5 or so years, everything else mentioned in this thread is going to start [poorly] implementing [subsets of (i.e. useless)] what nix and guix offer right now
that we ever didn't do it like this retrospectively seems absolutely retarded
i honestly feel really bad for anyone who hasn't yet discovered functional package management and want to help you all step up
this is the bright beautiful future and you'll understand as soon as you give it a try
But (regarding USPS) they're the only ones that actually have strict and enforced package tampering privacy laws that are heeded.
They are in all unironic seriousness the largest drug trafficker of all time - It's the vast majority of their business today and the only thing keeping them alive.

Who was the retard who named it apt-get? Why not ag or some shit? Wasting time since 1968
tell me more friendo
this
Why the fuck not just apt?
>but muh apt-cache
`apt cache` Wow, amazing. I must be a genius or something.
Then why do tutorials use apt-get?
pacman has the best syntax, this comes from a Debian user.
fun fact, MSYS2 uses pacman syntax.
apt is a front-end, and traditionally isn't always installed by default.
True sysadmins use apt-get/apt-cache/dpkg to do their package management.
thanks user, I actually learned something today
I'm saying that's what they SHOULD HAVE done.
this
sorcery
None.
Bleeding edge is as bad as old and deprecated.
I don't know if it's apt's fault or Ubuntu's but I always get a
>Unable to lock the administration directory
error at some point, when I'm not currently updating/installing anything
Portage/Emerge
Homebrew is actually pretty good. Apk (from Alpine) is very good too. Also heard good things about xbps. BSDs' pkg is also good.
>Wasting time since 1968
>Not setting an alias
/thread
you spelled fdroid wrong
Nix.
I've only used apt and pacman, they are both ok...
But I prefer the bleedin' edginess of arch, so pacman.
I think you meant guix.
> lisp
> gnu crap
> less support
> less packages
> lisp
give me ONE reason to replace nix with guix
knows what's up
Lisp and GNU.
It's not like you even have to replace one with the other anyway.
brew
docker
Those are not advantages.
ml-style >>>>> lisp
And nix uses linux standard technologies, such as systemd.
guix is just for the sake of "MUH GNU SYSTEM"
Plus there's nixops. And an order of magnitude or two more packages.
Apparently whatever NixOS and GuixSD have going on for them is pretty cool. I use Fedora as my daily and dnf has never given me any issues.
But xbps and portage are also really fun.
Even though the tool itself is shitty, nodejs dependency management is god tier. Virtualenv sucks, bundler sucks, why can't good languages have sensible, project specific dependency resolution?
Never heard of it?
You kill yourself. Babybuntu.
Unironically this
I personally prefer makepkg and pacman for ease of use but will not dispute this
Ports is very nice though
That's Ubuntu checking for updates in the background. If you go long enough without updating you'll get a notification that there are updated packages.
Installpkg
sbotools
eopkg
its slow as hell
This
This but stick xbps in between portage and Pacman
Pacman. It's super fast and easy to make packages for.
can I specify in package.json that optional dependencies should be ommited for a package yet?
sorcery
Bullshit.
FedEx took a week to a week and a half to deliver from the west coast. Same origin, USPS takes two to three days at a lower price.
FedEx tried to knock and run on a large package twice. The second time I was waiting and caught that sneaky fuck after he left a note. USPS kicks FedEx's ass for continental US deliveries.
It's so shitty that they've been wanting to program a new package manager (sol) for like 2 years now. Too bad it's a meme distro with only one real dev (ikey). He's also trying to switch Budgie to use Qt etc. etc. etc.
No wonder Solus is shilled so hard, they really lack devs
This
FedEx is ass and anyone that uses it doesn't deserve my business. Anything is better than FedEx.
