/lgbt/ Libreboot General Thread

Welcome to /lgbt/ Libreboot is the Greatest BIOS Thread!
Beginners feel free to ask questions!

Helpful resources:
Flashing the X60 internally (easy)

Flashing the X200/T400 externally (advanced)

So Sup Forums why haven't you installed the only BIOS that actually respects your freedom, privacy, and human rights by using no proprietary firmware and disables the Intel (NSA backdoor) ME?

>inb4 the dev is a tranny and drama queen
That's a red herring and has no bearing on the project
The dispute with GNU was resolved several months ago
youtube.com/watch?v=FQCwYAhZnQg

>inb4 no compatible system
You can literally get a ThinkPad X200 for $50 on ebay

>inb4 no beaglebone/pi for external flashing
You can get an X60 for internal flashing or use a Libreboot flashing service (about $50) on ebay for X200/T400

>inb4 that hardware is ancient
An X200 will pretty much do anything besides "muh gaymin" plus there are some descent mobo's that support Libreboot for an Intel or AMD desktop system (see the wiki page)

thanks for this. going to buy a raspberry pi so I can flash the t400 I'm getting soon. What is better for battery SSD or HD? HD is what I thought but maybe it has changed.

I would say SSD, less heat and energy, and no noise compared to a spinner. Plus significantly faster to load up and programs. I can't think of a reason not to get one. All my thinkpads have SSD and get great battery life.

cost is a factor for me. but I guess it will be worth it.

If you're not concerned about capacity size, you can get 64GB SSD on ebay for $30.

>be only libre BIOS available
>be run by a coke-addict tranny
the general thread on Sup Forums literally has an acronym of lgbt
can't make this shit up

suicide would be a good option for you.

why would it be a good option? I wasn't hating on the project, just thought it was ironic is all

Just wanted to stop by, give a (unnecessary) bump, this is a solid general.

please leave this website

Excuse me, but you're not the boss of Sup Forums

>inb4 that hardware is ancient
also, there's gonna be a fuckton of supported ARM Chromebooks in the next release when they actually get their shit together

>you're not the boss of Sup Forums

Go. Now. Before it's too late.

x220 support when?

Late 2017 according to the last update I got from Leah

everything but linux applies to apu2.
best embedded x86_64 you can buy

I don't give two shits about libreboot desu, coreboot is much more appealing to me

I just want an open firmware that boots faster, and I'm not concerned there will be some backdoor in a microcode update

I've tried it on my T400 and it's way faster to boot, but some issues with dual graphics, and the fact that tp_smapi goes out the window (no fan control, no BT disable, etc) pushed me back to the original BIOS

You realize libreboot is just a distribution of coreboot with any proprietary firmware removed, right?

someone please tell me how to find out my x60t edid, I can't for the life of me get the methods on the wiki to work and I really don't wanna disassemble it (unless it's idiot proof but I can see myself breaking it)

This should help I believe
libreboot.org/docs/misc/#get-edid-find-out-the-name-model-of-your-lcd-panel

pls help! :S how can I change the bootorder in libreboot? Its only booting from the HDD if its a debian based system like trisquel or devuan, parabola doesnt boot automatically, I have to select AHCI everytime :/

libreboot.org/docs/gnulinux/grub_cbfs.html

Thank you :) so much steps wow

Yeah, if it were me I'd just stick with debian-based systems. But I'm biased on that subject :)

Why should I bother with flashing my x200
Other than "muh botnet"

Are you a tranny?

Does that mean coreboot can use both gpu?

Tried option one, didn't work
Option two was just a blank file
Option three came up with this (the guide says you might need to change something, but what?)
Option four is out of the question until tomorrow as i'm tired as fuck, anyone know what i've done wrong when it comes to finding my edid?

It looks like the only option left is to take the panel off to get the number on it, sorry senpai :( just buy an X200 on ebay, they're as cheap as $50

Is freedom from proprietary firmware not enough? It also loads faster than the lenovo BIOS, so there's that.

Maybe, you'd have to check the documentation files on there website to be sure

should I just wing it for bantz
got a 1/3 chance of it working kek

Personally I'd just take the panel off to see, it's not that hard.

Will only thinkpads be supported? I'm thinking of buying a computer this year, and I don't want to buy a 10 year old computer. What do lads?

...

There's a few mobo's that are supported, plus an older macbook and chromebook
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libreboot#Supported_systems

kek

Plus I'll say my X200 can handle anything I throw at it, including 1080p streaming and light gaming. I got the X200, a new keyboard, the libreboot flash, an ultradock with DVD drive and displayport, and an atheros AR9380, all for about $160. Comfy af.

Bump for interest

Installing a free operating system on the RK3288 chromebooks isn't too easy though. Debian and ALARM both have step-by-step guides but either I'm an idiot or there's something missing from them. Anyway, it kind of works: I installed ALARM and migrated to Parabola and it boots from an SD card.

I still have a bunch of problems with it though. Booting and installing stuff doesn't go nearly as smoothly as it does on x86.

Does anyone know if the latest generation (5th) X1 Carbon has Intel Boot Guard on it? I really want to buy one but I would like to know beforehand if it's going to ever be possible to disable ME on it. It seems like Kabylake will get supported by me_cleaner eventually but if Boot Guard is present, you're eternally fucked.

I think it has it, sorry senpai

That's LITERALLY the point of this thread

Says the nigger using reddit spacing

If someone that owns one could actually confirm that'd be great

OP, include the T500

>have librebooted X200
>run non 100% Arch GNU/Linux

*non 100% free

>Another fucking general

Just make a thread and a pastebin holy fuck

>libreboot for AMD
>it's just a plea for AMD to "do the right thing"
Guess i'll try in 10 years

The true libertarian set-up.

Bump.

good thread

Why not 100% free?

>An X200 will pretty much do anything besides "muh gaymin"
If you delusional cucks keep telling yourselves that, you might end up believing it one day.

Fuck off. I've been using an X200 as my primary machine for months now. It just werks

For webbrowsing and your shitty hobbyist scripting, maybe. Good luck getting any serious work done on it.

It does 1080p streaming and Gimp works flawlessly for photo editing. I can even play my favorite FPS with no lag. Maybe you're just not very efficient with your computational resources?

>and Gimp works flawlessly for photo editing.
For certain low-levels of photo editing.
Like how Notepad is a great DE.

>streaming
>GIMP
>gaymez
>serious work
So what about video editing, CAD work, or just about anything else that requires more computational power than a toaster, how might it handle that ? Not at all ?

It'll handle video editing just fine. I have no experience with CAD, isn't that something engineering students do?

You do realize the X200 was a $2000 business machine in 2009? It's by no means underpowered.

>It'll handle video editing just fine.
It really, really won't.

>It's by no means underpowered.
It is severely underpowered. It doesn't matter how much it cost back then.
And cost aside, it was an *office* machine intended for light workloads. Not a mobile workstation like the W series.
But if you think being expensive makes it powerful, then you probably think Macbooks are powerful too, right ?

Fuck off, it had the top of the line Core 2 Duo. I know what I'm talking about because I actually have one. You don't know shit.

>Core 2 Duo
Fucking exactly what makes it severely underpowered. A Sandy Vagina X220 is significantly faster with an i5 already.

You're delusional and you have no idea what you're talking about.

You're the delusional faggot. It will handle literally anything. You have no arguments and are just spreading bullshit. Plus the X220 will be supported later this year. Now fuck off and stay out of this thread. This is for serious discussion not CIA spooks who want to discourage people from a truly free and private computing experience.

So... the best is win7-10? That's not how that meme is supposed to work...

Why is so hard to understand? ?

He asked specifically about battery, not which is better overall. But yeah, it's still the SSD.

It's expanding brain meme, the best is at the bottom

>It will handle literally anything.
Go edit a 10 minutes long 1080p video at 30fps right now and tell me how it goes.
Here's a hint: It's going to go very, very slowly.

No, that's not how that meme works.

Is a joke, the last one is the worst.

>You can literally get a ThinkPad X200 for $50 on ebay
fuck off I'm payin 125€ for a x200

Sorry mate

No, it can go either way, I just checked on know your meme website

you americans always have the best deals

Oh God... that's cuz a lot of brainlets can't understand the meme.

That shit started with bottom were the worst but a lot of faggs thought it was the best and started to make its own.

Now is acceptable the opposite? Fuck this. For me there says win7-10 are the best.

X60 w/ Libreboot and Gentoo + i3wm here AMA

What a fucking moron. I used to do extensive video editing on a 600Mhz G3 iMac back in the day with no problem. Only a retard would claim you can't edit videos on a machine like the X200

Cool, but I don't understand the picture

I am a senior level mechanical engineering and my x220 can handle small cad projects just fine.

If you're doing serious work with assemblys, you would get a fucking workstation GPU, bourbon not poor so i have a workstation desktop (well gay man desktop lol) and its unlikely I'd work in a place that would require me to purchase my own portable workstation
You're spewing shit

will this program download tranny porn to my thinkpad?

Hey guys, there's an open ticket on: PRIVACY TOOLS GITHUB

It asks knowledgable info about de-btonetted hardware

Your support will be appreciated there

www.privacytools.io - encryption against global mass surveillance

and you dont really need 1080p res videos if you have a 1366x768 or lower screen.

I output to a 1080p monitor over displayport, but you're right, I can hardly tell a difference between 720 and 1080.

Just point them to libreboot.org

It's not a program, it's a BIOS replacement

This.

Those are drugs user

that was kind of my point, that libreboot is just a shitty version of coreboot so you can yell "muh freedoms" while removing functionality from your device

I want open-source software to make my hardware better, not worse

Aren't drugs, like, ultimate degeneracy? Why are you posting this poison?

Does anyone knows how to recover my fb without using email verification?

It's fully functional

riiiight

I kind of want coreboot because of the superior mascot

rabbits > deer

>he uses the reddit capital letters and punctuation

I think that's been fixed.

nigger

fixed in coreboot?

because from the description it seems to imply that this is a bug in the CPU that is fixed with a microcode update, and not necessarily a bug in coreboot

Oh ok, sorry I misread that. I've never messed with virtualization so I'm not as familiar with it.

Can we please keep racism out of this thread?

No shit. That's 8 years ago. The Core2Duo in that thing didn't age as well as Sandy Bridge... The only thing saving it from being a pure text working machine is the fact that the iGPU is one of intel's first to support H264 decoding in hardware... the rest is just pure meh. Video editing my ass.

Instead of retrocomputing, just buy Talos II.
raptorcs.com/

does it have sata ports or are there cheap sata cards for it? sas raid meme cards are expensive

2300$ for just the mainboard + 1 CPU
I hope they offer a single cpu board bundle in the future for ~1500$

There is an optional SAS controller, but it's 300$. Otherwise, you can buy an external SATA controller (that's what I do) or use NVME HDD.

bump for interest

Oh boy, a $2300 machine with no software! :^)

I can't seem to find a concise pinout for the x200 with a raspberry pi. I'm not gonna fucking buy a beaglebone.
