How come you can get a 6 Core 12 thread Xeon for like 15-20 USD/EUR on Ebay but even the most basic 1366 socket board will set you back ~$100€?

Why are those relatively powerful CPUs so cheap?

because dead and discontinued platform

I don't believe a single word out of your filthy mouth

Thousands upon thousands of old, decommissioned servers.

Look at the prices of server that are a couple of generations old. You can buy 10 for the price of a shitty rusted car.

This.

But at the same time I bought a 980x for $90, and sold my 920 for $80 shipped.

I can buy a Xeon X5680 for like $25. Might do that.

I am still shocked how many working 1366 CPUs there are on the used markets and how little motherboards.

I guess they just stuff the CPUs in an envelope and make a few bucks but don't want to be bothered with shipping a cluncky motherboard and just throw them away

>920 for $80
What, where? What moron would buy it for that much they are $20€ buy now on ebay
>Xeon X5680
You really should

>What, where? What moron would buy it for that much they are $20€ buy now on ebay
It's going for $50 bare without heatsink of eBay right now. I sold mine with all original equipment.

It's the same with the opteron 6xxx series.

I see it bare for 19.90

Clearly different markets.

There are far more surviving 1366 sever boards than desktop boards, that's the only reason for the price disparity.
1366 was relatively short lived, unfortunately for cheap Xeon addicts, but it made sense because the platform is a power hog and SB clocked much higher with the last significant IPC jump Intel ever made.

I'm eagerly waiting for 1680-v1s to drop below $100 so I can have a 4.5Ghz 8 core on the cheap.

What's a good dual 1366 mobo?

what a shame

I bought a cheap 1650, 6/12 unlocked. Cheap ryzen with better linux support.

aren't new Xeons bad for gaming because of some bullshit intel pulled?

Seconding
Is that true?

I just swapped my dual x5670 system for a 1800x and all my render times halfed
shit's getting old, as much as I like 1366

Obviously you will get petter performance with newer hardware.

I just think form a bang for your buck perspective it's really interesting especially if you are on a tight budget. Or at least it would be if the boards weren't so scarce.

yup, my supermicro board might bring like $250 on ebay. that's really weird

It sure will if you set it to buy now

...

I guess but it's tech related
Afaik the E3-1230v2 is similar to the i7-3770 just with no igpu and slightly lower clock.
Don't see why yu shouldn't use that for gaming.

>shlomoshekelbergrubbinghishands.png

you should

My i7 920 (lga 1366) motherboard went and buying even a used motherboard wasn't worth it. I ended up building a new pc.

Now I have a useless i7 920 cpu just in a box. I'll probably throw it away.

makes a great keychain

and that is the reason they are 20 bucks on ebay trannies and gentlemen

the T series kabylake's are better than any xeon

its only 35watts, comes with intel's 630 graphics and boost clocks match the stock or K models, plus hyperthreading

my 7700T is coming in the mail tomorrow to replace my G4600 along with my 1060 6GB

So you are trying to tell us that a new $300 CPU is better than a 7 year old $25 CPU?

i was referring to the 1151 socket xeons

Huh. It would have been funnier if you were talking about the 1366 socket Xenons to be totally honest.

Old tech is pretty much worthless to the enterprise customers who buy these things. When newer energy efficient models come out they get rid of the old ones en masse. What you're getting are high-end used goods.

The appeal is not for enterprise, it's seeing high-end components (for their time) trickle down to where it is more than affordable to home users/small business.

OP asked why they were cheap and I answered the question.
