If you hire them this means that you can give them any distro you care to and they'll use it. Linux penetration there is low because Japanese mostly don't bother with using computers at home, just in the workplace, so it's not like they'll demand something that's similar to their own machine.

Japanese homes are sub-cuckshed bamboo floored boxes. It's not like the annie mays. They just don't have a place to put a PC, so they use phones. This has been the case since like 2004, when Jap phones first started getting semi usable browsers and email. That in turn is why business culture froze on XP. There was never much demand for later OSes.

Addendum: iPhones and Android are popular in Japan now too, so that's driving at least app devs to win7/mac/Linux.
