how's the x1 carbon gen 5? been eyeing them lately

There might be something going for the build, but definitely not the specs.

You can get better specs for cheaper.

Reposting here

I've been looking into getting a new laptop for everyday use and for some light gaming (like League of Legends some MMO, nothing graphically demanding). I got some recommendations for the Dell 15 7000, but read up about it having a poor display. Laptopmag suggested the Asus ROG Strix GL553VD for better display, but while it has better display, it takes a hit on speakers, touchpad, and battery life.

tl;dr: Do you have any recommendations for a good balance between good display and good performance that fits a $1,200-$1,500 budget?

Why are laptops so extortionately priced?
You have to be willing to spend at least £600-800 just to start not getting a fucking mobile phone processor in a laptop

They seem more expensive than it's worth. The T440s and T450s both are slim and get great battery life with 6 cell external.

Reposting my bread here

Who /Dell/ here? Their XPS model laptops look fantastic and I'm seriously considering buying one for when I start my Computer Science course next year

Thoughts?

not including true master "14 inches" race

>Thoughts?
Buy ear protection because you'll need it

I just got the 4K model 9560 three days ago. So far it's pretty good. Smooth experience, except with Java based applications. The scaling on things like eclipse and sql developer can't be fixed right now. Stayed up last night trying to find a solution.

Other than that it's beautiful, sleek, sexy and stays squiet.

Go be poor somewhere else.

I was looking a the XPS 15 line and watching reviews there seems to be serious QC issues with them.

>17.3 in
ideal size is a 14.1 or a 15.6
smaller is better too but not ideal due to overheating issues common with smaller laptops

I bought the XPS 13 9343 when they came out. I got the touch screen version because at the time that was the only one I could get my hands on in store that had 8GB of RAM. I strongly regret not being patient because the glossy screen is annoying and I never use the touch screen.
Don't know if it matters to you but I also got rid of Windows and only run Ubuntu on it and I get about 2hrs less of battery life.

About to buy an Acer Chromebook 11, 4gb version, for $250. Want to dual boot Gallium and use it for writing. Should I go through with it?

for any purpouse:

15.6" is the minimum

17.3" pretty darn good

bigger than than 19 like unpractical ... about the weight i don't give a 2 shits - battery life is an issue though

Yoga 720 15'
>i7 7700HQ
>GTX 1050
>no gaymur aesthetic
>wacom pen support
worth it?

get an elitebook g series. they don't coil whine, the keyboard's comfy, i/o is better, there's a trackpoint, and cooling's better. the g1 comes with 4th gen core i5/i7, g2 5th gen, etc.

notebookcheck.net/HP-EliteBook-840-G4-7200U-Full-HD-Laptop-Review.207718.0.html

So...

I got HP Pavilion x360 14t for 650 euros aka 780. i3-7100U and 256gb SDD. I think its the 2017 with ink support so there is that

Specs are not the best but my god was it hard to find these specs to begin with. i3-7100U laptops set you back at least 500€ and cheapest i5 was 599 but with less storage and more size.

>Thats way off in price
Consumer electronics cost a lot here, so add 24% more dosh to any US price and then some so you get prices here.

I could still return this thing no questions asked. I wonder what options I would have if I did though, used laptops arent really that much better either in specs department. You have to pay one with 2th or 3rd gen i5 M or i7 to compensate. Size is a problem too plus battery/screen aint so good

DId I fuckup? I m planning to use this for 5 years in uni which is electric engineering. I could still return this thing if there are better models for same specs/price.

>search laptop name + review on youtube
>only Indians and Russians

Is this a red flag?

Had the same issue, if you turn off high resolution DPI scaling you can adjust the font size and make it usable, annoying as fuck, but then again 1080 is better than 4k anyway
>battery life

>What is the ideal laptop size?
13''.
Anything bigger than that is a pain to carry and if you want to do work on your computer get a monitor for your workspace.
If you want a 15-17'' laptop you better be using it to work stationary but in a lot of different places and desks. 13'' is the best compromise of screen estate and portability desu

>13"
So, X or T series?

Dell XPS 15

14" is perfect. 15" is acceptable.
If I'd had to pick a laptop right now, I would go with T420, or with of 14" Dell Latitudes, CPU-only.
Why?
Having discrete GPU in your laptop is stupid.
Having discrete GPU wastes your power. Yes, you can switch it off, but then, why buying it in a first place?

15".

17" is awkward shit.

Because they're pre-assembled. Only artards compare prices with their newegg cart.

They're usually too anemic though. 15" is the sweet spot.

2x G751 reporting in, anything below 15.6" is for cucks and weaklings. My 980m version was only $850 as well.

For when you want / need to use it. With modern hybrid graphics, it's not much of a hassle, at least on Windows. It can switch on and off automatically, whenever additional GPU power is needed.

Why aren't there any dust and print resistant laptops?

What's the best ultraconvertible today?

Virtual Machines.

Is Lenovo memeing or does it really get 15hrs?

To num pad or not to num pad? That is the question.
strawpoll.me/13973316

pretty much depending on what your doing i average about 13 or so

Mostly web browsing, word processing, and using a virtual machine.
I could definitely expect over 10hrs assuming I don't use a virtual machine too much?

ideal yeah i just shitpost like 9/13 hours or watch movies/youtube

I would love to say I like having a numpad on my laptop because I do actual work on it (I do) but honestly it's because it makes Dwarf Fortress easier to play.

do you have a option? almost all 15" laptops have the numpad

ThinkPad X1 Yoga looks pretty sweet

youtu.be/9pWzRoD8Kp8

12" to 14" any larger is stupid and defeats the purpose of buying a laptop.

14 inch lenovo thinkpad

Need a laptop lads

Here are the details:

>Budget:
preferably under 1000 dollars, around $500 would be ideal but I can push for $800 at most
>Size:
Don't care as long it is not huge as in 17.3 inches. I will be using this laptop for class so I don't want anything unwieldy.
>Battery Life
Don't care, as long as it isn't shit. My university has a plethora of outlets.
>What are you using it for
For class basically. I need a laptop that is powerful enough to CAD and run Gazebo smoothly. To add, I'd like to run ubuntu alongside the main OS so I can run gazebo. Optionally, it would be cool to have one of those touchscreen laptops where I can use a stylus to take notes, but of course, that isn't a priority; I have pen and paper anyway.

im pretty tall, anything smaller than 15 inches is just to far to my eyes when i use it on my lap

How is pentium 4415u in comparison with i3 3217u? I hurt my back, so it's really uncomfortable to use desktop for now, i have my 4 y/o pseudo-thinkpad, which is enough for me from perfomance standpoint, but it's 11 inches, so i want to buy cheap 17" laptop with either 4405u or 4415u as temporal solution.

Same guy here, was thinking about this: amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Yoga-i5-6200U/dp/B01AKVAU2Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1505940741&sr=8-2&keywords=x1 yoga

would this fit my needs?

For what fucking purpose we have here another general for portable computers? tpg should be enough for that.

W530, M4700 or 8760w

12 to 13 is laptop.

Anything more and its a desktop replacement

Same

My eyes are shit and anything less than 15" is hard to read.

I would go with num pad. It's slower to type numbers without it.

Actually im the same, 15" for the weak of eyes

Suggest me something under $400 other than the thinkpads?

Tpg is a circle jerk of people who recommend old laptops with horrible screens.

Latitudes

Acer Aspire E15 for $350

Macbook Pro. 2017 base model, upgrade to 256GB drive. Purchase. Be satisfied.
>B-BUT muhhh ports
>carrying enough gear to need ports, yet not willing to carry one dongle
>MFW

Budget is $1500 plus or minus $100, although I doubt I need a laptop that expensive. I'm looking for something relatively light and portable (12-13 inch seems practical enough). The longer the battery life the better. I need to be able to work for hours at a time without necessarily having access to an outlet. Primarily for schoolwork, studying Math+CS. Linux-friendly is a must. Strongly prefer buying new.

I am not familiar with what most laptops are like nowadays. I had been running on an old X200 for quite a while but it was ruined in a freak accident. The first obvious choice for me was to take a look at what the current line of ThinkPads are like. In particular I thought the X270 looked quite good, and it is currently what I intend on purchasing.

I thought I'd ask for other opinions first since I really don't follow consumer electronics closely. Please let me know if there are other good options that meet my criteria.

thats like $6-700

Its there a point in having SSD, i7 5600u and 16ram? i don´t think i can use all that ram

Not the one on Amazon
E5-575-33BM
1080p

Gaming
Recording gameplay
School
Video production
Music production
Photoshop

Use Intellij Idea instead of Eclipse.

I don't think so. I have a 720s and has the same issue as the 720 Yoga. The coolers run all the time even if temperature is low (40°C). Still waiting for them to fix this.

Is this deal too good to be true?

$500 for a thinkpad carbon x1

If I was getting another laptop I'd want a 15" display in a small bezel format. I've never seen one in person though so I have no idea how big they are. Are the keyboards still the same "full" size?

that's the first gen one you mook
we're on gen 5
go check ebay and the lenovo outlet for a newer one with at least a fhd screen

It's a 1st Gen one. I'd check out some reviews before hand.

I got the xps 13 9360 with i5, 1080p and 8gb ram. very good computer, decent speed and an actual 8 to 10 hour battery life, as long as you don't play games.

mm, makes sense, thanks

replying to last thread
I wanted it to be smol and light. Thinkpad X1 was the lightest they say.

Which one is better, gen one yoga or t470?

+1, very comfy, hard to find anyway. If you stay on desktop use a desktop computer. Share file using whatever network-device you want, just keep a notebook mobile

Hp Spectre x360

I need a laptop to run Linux, preferably 15+, usb3, wifi ac, ram 6GB+ or upgradable, under 500€
Impossible to find, right? I've given up

See

Literally the smallest lightest laptop is the best, the bigger it is the heavier it is and the less portable is. You don't need a monstrous screen when you are doing work on the go. Get a lenovo yoga or a small spectre.

i run 17" and i carry it in a backpack, i use it for Sup Forums, porn, emails, and reading pdfs. i have to travel a lot for work and it needs to be my main pc at the hotel and i need to have diagrams and shit open while i've got my head in equipment. desu the main reason i like the bigger screen is for big porn

this

>tfw no 11 inch laptop with dedicated gpu

r8 my 420€ laptop
13", 8 hours of YT playback from wifi, doesn't actually throttle under full load

I don't know your use case, but you can just connect your laptop to your screen, wireless keyboard + mouse, and headphone/speakers, so you can pretty much ignore those for gaming, unless you live in a dorm or want to game somewhere where you can't do that.

fuck off

Good performance without GPU 11" laptop for Linux?

the text is still small as fuck

No.
Ideal size is 13.3 or 14(.1)"

chromebook w/linux

15.6 inches
17 is not portable enough
13.3 is useless

15.6 also offers relativity thin and light laptops with a ton of power for the same money as under powered 13.3 inch laptops. Also 6 hours of battery life is enough for anyone. Ive at most had a computer on in class taking notes for 3 hours with no charger plugged in.

15.6" is
>too small for video watching, gaming or productive work.
>too big to be portable

t. 13 inch retard

its easily portable and large enough for video work and gaming and i know this because i do this.

>30min battery life
No thanks

>video work
anime, cat videos, porn

>video work and gaming
Better get a desktop.

i have both

Anyone have an idea on how long before the XPS 15 gets new Kaby Lake processors? I know the 13 got the refresh last week but couldn't find any other news.

I thought a 15.6" would be too big but it's perfect for me. Comfy when watching movies.

Traveling a lot? 13"~

General portability from home to work/school, or literally use it on your lap a lot? 15"~

Desktop replacement, but still need to port it around on occasion? 17"~

Almost fell for the portability meme because that's what all the new laptops are. I only use my laptop at home. Plus I'm too used to having a num pad.

Why the fuck would you want an 11 inch? That's like preferring a tiny dick. Can't do shit with a tiny dick.
