On the fence right now looking to get a tablet for the first time

on the fence right now looking to get a tablet for the first time.

right now obviously the two best options are the ipad pro and the surface.

do you guys have an opinion on which one is better?

what are certain things you like about the one you choose and why is it a better use of my money?

just for reference i've been leaning towards the ipad pro because reviews have said the pen integration is incredibly smooth and the screen is 120hz however is it true there is no adblock for ios and jailbreaking is incredibly hard now?

Why do you want a tablet?

something comfortable and cozy thats very portable. mostly im looking for something that I can lounge around on my bed with when my back starts to ache

iPad Pro. The clusterfuck which was the SP3 and the whole fiasco with the battery issue and fake resolution patch just goes to prove MS doesn't give two shits about supporting their products long term.

Smartphone

If you mean literally just watch porn on it and Youtube, then get the cheapest iPad mini or whatever, don't bother getting a iPad Pro or a Surface if you're not going to be doing any real tasks on it especially if they utilize a stylus like drawing.

>however is it true there is no adblock for ios

There is adblock for iOS, multiple.

example: itunes.apple.com/us/app/adguard-adblock-and-privacy-protection/id1047223162?mt=8

If you want to use it on the bed and couch, there's only one to choose then.

The Surface is not really a tablet, you'll have to use mouse stuff on it sooner or later, which you'll need the trackpad and stuff. Ever wonder you never see a Surface without the keyboard attached ever?

Also, Chrome doesn't work with Touch UI, and Edge still doesn't have adblock.

>no ad blocking for iOS
It’s literally built right into safari to work with as blocker software, which you download from the App Store itself. 1Blocker is the best one hands down, the competition is not even in the same league. Also, you can just use Brave, or SnowHaze which are privacy based browsers with built in content blocking.
If you have macOS and aren’t mentally retarded you can build any open source app (like console emulators) from source code and sign it yourself for free as a personal developer for testing, and side load it onto your device with Xcode, and pirated apps can be sideloaded onto any device with a Cydia program for Windows and you don’t even have to jailbreak. This is the better way to go because Jailbreak ruins the point of being on iOS IMO.

Apple will probably be more expensive but the investment is worth it if you can't work a computer worth a damn. If you want to have adblock or literally anything other than vanilla and you sort of know what you're doing get the Windows.

If both are expensive as shit and all you're doing is browsing facebook I'd honestly get something that runs on Android. No reason to spend a bazillion dollars on a facebook machine.

>fence
are you serious??? surface pro a shit!

>Consumer Reports: Microsoft Surface is Dead Last for Reliability

>The consumer advocates at Consumer Reports have delivered a stunning blow to Microsoft: The nonprofit organization has pulled its recommendations for Surface products, citing an industry-worst failure rate.

>These conclusions are based on our breakage rate estimates for laptops by the end of the 2nd year of ownership, gathered from subscribers' experiences with 41,304 laptops purchased new between 2014 and the first quarter of 2017. Our statistical model estimates breakage rates for laptops not covered by a service contract and accounts for the number of hours of use per week. Differences of less than 5 points aren't meaningful. Models within a brand may vary, and changes in design or manufacturer may affect future reliability. Still, choosing a brand with a lower estimated breakage rate can improve your odds of getting a dependable model.

>But as Consumer Reports notes, the reliability of Apples laptop and tablet products are consistently the most highly rated by its readers. So whether you believe that MacBooks and iPads are innovative, they are indeed the most reliable products of their kind.

Then there's an issue with that alcantara cover that's non-removable and attracts dirt like crazy. Oh, and it also degrades and becomes hard as a rock after a year.

Surface is junk for literally everything.

>iFixit grades MS Surface Laptop 0/10
>The Surface Laptop is not a laptop. Its a glue-filled monstrosity. There is nothing about it that is upgradable or long-lasting, and it literally cant be opened without destroying it.

>No reason to spend a bazillion dollars on a facebook machine.

But that's what all modern PCucks aka PC """""gamers""""" do or rather have mommy buy for them.

wait really?

is the onscreen keyboard shit or something?

mostly i want to be able to program python on this device (which I cannot do on the ipad pro?) and when I get tired of sitting I want to be able to sit on my bed and browse the web and Sup Forums .

>Edge still doesn't have adblock
Ublock Origin works

>i want to use shitty phone apps on bigger screen
get the ipad
>i want to do actual computing work on the go
get the surface

it's simple

do you think its feasible to program in java/python on the surface pro?

one more question. the cheapest model is only $799 but it only has 'Intel Core m3 – 4GB Memory'.

is this good enough for coding in python?

iOS should also have an app for programming in Python, idk about java cause I never looked.
Python is harder on the processor, and yes 4GB should be fine, either device will work, but ofc the windows machine will feel more natural for python, but the iOS does have python ide and can run scripts for testing right in that app

Honestly a regular iPad would be fine. The iPad Pro might be an unecessary step up for your use case. Your call though.

Both are shit.

No. Of course not.

I just checked, and python and Java both have clean and polished looking IDE’s for iOS

Pretty much. They have the apps to support it, but it is a terrible platform for development. Most effective for small scripting, or reading over code and small changes from bed or on the go or something.

no kidding? i thought if its the surface pro its the same as windows 10 so i could install an ide and use it like normal?

or do i have the surface pro completely wrong in my mind?

you could do small Python scripts and stuff. not powerful enough for Java

i see. thanks for filling me in!

I mean, sure, but why would you ever want to use that keyboard for serious work? It would be a nightmare to code with. You’re never gonna be able to use these devices for hardcore code entry, or compiling.

why don't you just edit your hosts file?

Nobody in this thread has any idea what the fuck they're talking about.

The m3 Surface is shit, don't bother at all because the m3 is shit.

I have a i5 version and I can compile code just fine on Netbeans for Java and C++ on Visual Studio. If small programming is all you're going to be doing, get a second hand i5 Surface Pro 4 or you can wait for the newer Surface Pro and try to customize the specs to your liking.

You can do virtually anything with a surface tablet, those 4gb of ram will make any ide work really. The only bitching for more is when you will start making games on it with unity/unreal przy use it for Java developer, as those have boilerplates and middlewares all around. Also, dont code on a fucking iPad. sooner or later you gonna run into a wall where you wont be able to do much more and just keep watching porn on the dang thing.

haha thanks for the heads up.

yeah ipad doesn't seem like it would be as easy to code on.

thanks again!

He never said that, that was from Steve Jobs regarding Microsoft.

ignore shills and check this out

I've been programming sińce early 2000s and what the unholy fuck on earth is hardcore code entry? Surface keyboard is usable, iPad pro keyboard something is crap. Yes, the surface keyboard is like typing on a thing sheet of metal, but it somewhat worka and can easily be replaced with a small mech keyboard od you are into those or a good small Logitech wireless (like k480)

Nvidia shield

>Surface Pen: $99
>Cover Keyboarding costing that much

I don't care for either brand, in fact if anything OP can just grab a laptop (a much cheaper one that what you posted with just as good if not better specs) but it's pretty fucking pathetic you actively look for the most expensive options to make a side look bad. Since you're on Amazon why don't you show the Amazon prices for things like the black cover that's $110?

get a thinkpad x220. the screen is a tablet

I would not buy either device for coding when I can use a laptop. To me a tablet is a complimentary device to a laptop. If you want to spend almost $1500 on a surface pro and use it primarily as a replacement for a $800 laptop, go right ahead though.

>Missing the point this much
user asked for a tablet, we all know x220 is better than any fucking tablet really.

iPad pro all the way.

>surface pro
>literally bigger & heavier than a macbook / macbook air

just get a fucking notebook, tablets are for women
