yeah. File extensions are just hints to the OS to which program to open the file with. It doesn't change anything in the file.

Yes. You can even make a file that's a valid as multiple file types so that different programs will work.
yes linux uses a magic number to determine the file type. You could write python scripts as .jpeg and it wouldnt make a difference.
check the magic number, it's not always an archive
