POTTERING!!!
/thread
Please give good alsa setup. The only extra feature I want is per application volume, can you set this up somehow in alsa?
No you can't
Damn. Is there any way to get per application volume without pulse on GNU/Linux?
NOT A BUG.
get a shitload of dacs and set up one per application, then use a mixing board to control each individual volume.
C L O S E D .
Eternal kraut strikes again
this looks like a GTK error or something even if pulseaudio was what crashed desu
Isn't pulseaudio needed to run Firefox?
>github.com
Do read the bottom part of the README as there is some about:config stuff required for Firefox, and then it works.
>@poettering added the not-a-bug label
Linux Distros still haven't figured out a universal audio interface?
It's like 30 years ago hassling around with different sound cards that were equally shit and didn't support all programs
JACK can do it but it's a gigantic pain in the ass to get working, and then you'll still be hard pressed to get rid of pulse because a handful of certain programs only support pulse (god knows why they don't use a generic library)
He succeed on making Linux more like Windows. Congrats Lennart, I hope you get cancer.

How?
I've been using pulse for years now, it's not as easy to configure as alsa, but it's never fucking crashed on me
Try windows
don't use oss4 it's not maintained, supports only few devices and was propietary before.
...
Windows and Apple were and still are much better wrt. audio than any Unix OS
Why wouldn't people copy them in this particular field. Unix is not a deity, it actually sucks in many areas.
closed. not a bug.
never needed that. all media applications have their own volume thing - firefox, mpv etc
it's optional

Running some stuff inside firejail crashes the PulseAudio on 16.04
Unix actually had pretty good audio. see: plan9 (unix concepts)
>running sound drivers on a server OS
Why is that pulse's fault though?
USE=-pulseaudio
Install Gentoo
and spend hours recompiling your browser because of an autistic preference for sound servers.
The Microsoft Windows 10 does not have this problem.
An "autistic preference" now means not wanting to use the worst option? How long until this insanity ends?
>tfw waiting for Pipewire
ignore the normies
they pay Chad to do their set ups for them
because it crashes?

Alsa can't into different outputs for different applications
-improves horrible audio situation on linux desktop, gets shat on
-improves horrible services situation on linux desktop, gets shat on
ahhh linux community
The Apple Macbook Pro with Retina Display doesn't have this problem.
Guys just use furry browser already
>Improves
I run gentoo as my primary os and I use pulseaudio. I just don't see where all the hate comes from, it has always worked perfectly for me and is much more featured and usable than alsa.
It's gonna be a shitty redhat mess too. Probably gonna hard depend on systemd, dbus, and bus1 kernel patches because "muh performance" and it's going to create a cgroup for every audio device or something stupid like that.
That's what the G at the start of GIMP stands for.
>open vlc to watch degenerate cartoons
>open firefox to watch degenerate porn at the same time
>no sound on my degenerate porn because ALSA
dmix is an alternative to pulse. ALSA is not. they don't even do the same thing.
>spend hours recompiling
>start compiling
>go to sleep
>it's done in the morning
wow what a waste of time
There's literally NOTHING wrong with Systemd.
It gained a bad rep early on which has never gone away despite it being good now.
except for all the things wrong with it
I want to buy a 16 core threadripper literally only for compiling gentoo with ungodly speed
someone convince me not to please
Pulseaudio is a cancer.
Something going on with HDMI audio buffers, its processing a few patches of the spectrum and then the rest comes at a 3 second delay. Sounding like a floppy drive.
I always kek when some ignorant noob cries on the forum about pottering pulseaudio and systemd.
I use pulse and I never had any troubles with pulse.
May be you guys should read mans and documentation before using something in linux?
Buy it, post specs in screenfetch threads :^)
>unironically using Linux
Switch to *BSD you C U C K
>switch to pulseaudio for better bluetooth support
>bluetooth is worse with desync that can only be solved by reconnecting the device (twice! because pa doesn't recognize it on the first reconnect) and random disconnects
Linux on desktop would be a thing by now if we didn't let chucklefucks like Lennart write the infrastructure for it.
PulseAudio's docs are terrible though
This. And also ALSA can't switch between outputs (jack to usb), only reason I use pulseaudio on desktop (and it's a nightmare). ALSA on laptop because I don't use my usb dac/amp on my laptop. T430 soundcard is pretty good on its own.
the absolute state of loonix
