I use Discord for two reasons. One, it got my friends to stop using fucking Skype. Two, it made setup and use so much fucking easier than walking my retarded friends through setting up irc, joining a server, joining a channel and then doing the same for teamspeak/ventrilo/mumble/what the fuck ever the current thing we're doing requires.

The average person probably isn't willing to install new software just to talk to another person, it was the largest issue with Mumble when I tried using it as a Skype replacement, bundle that with a crap UI and you're guaranteed to deter lots of people.
I hear Mumble has an installation wizard now.
Mumble had the lowest latency out of all the alternatives at the time, my god it shat on Skype from such a height but nobody could be arsed to set it up properly and the documentation was practically nill.
I think part of the reason Discord has had so much success is their onboarding process and easy to understand UI.
