How do people typically use this? It doesn't seem that efficient to rip an entire video to watch it once. Am I missing something?

yeah, most people rip videos to watch them more than once. hope i helped.

I use it to get free music to mix for my brother's shitty parties with the added luxury of a shitty video show going on at the same time.

Most people use it with mpv, so that you can start watching as soon as it starts downloading and you can seek the video at any point. It's the god-tier solution for watching cancertube.

This:
I use it as a library required by MPV on my rasp. I stream audio tracks from videos, which I request via voice commands I input to my phone.

this.
it also works for livestreams off Youtube and Twitch.

Download what you can now friends you won't be able to with the new HTML5 drm standards. At some point things will be behind a paygate

this is actually kind of scary, every time I check my favorites at least 1/4 are marked as "removed".

If it exists pixel-for-pixel on your screen, it can be ripped pixel-for-pixel from your memory.

you're already downloading the video. why not save it?

Use it for when you want to watch video with better scaler with mpv.

Use it when you want to watch full documentaries by downloading first then watching on mpv.

Also used for porn.

>Am I missing something?
your life man. You're wasting it worrying about stupid shit like this. Don't be like us. You can still be saved. Go out. Meet someone. Find happiness.

i created some scripts to use youtube-dl -> ffmpeg script collection that takes the input and does things based on number input for selection of tasks (some specific keys to do common processes i do regularly too) and then i use another script to precisely edit with ffmpeg via mpv screenout utility.

video editing interfaces are overrated, too much overhead, i dont feel close to my files when theres layers of seperation between me and them.

it is very effective to edit videos with cli, too. everything i do is precise and uses vim style input for my script.

no, you cnanot have my scripts, they are integral to me, they are a part of me.

The way I use it:
"Subscribe" to channels by maintaining a list of watched videos, then download everything I haven't watched.
It uses more diskspace, but it uses a lot less memory and CPU when you play video, you can skip around in the video, pause it for hours, play it wherever I want.
Local media is much better.
I mostly follow news and educational type stuff, not any of that 10:01 shit

maybe this'll complete the process of turning video on the internet into television, so that its just as ignoreable as television is.

If a website puts an image/video on to your screen, you'll be able to download it.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. You are right, video editing software is overrated, most things they do can be done with ffmpeg.

i hope you can fabricate a system that will work naturally for you without unnecessary hassle.

cli reigns supreme for simplicity's sake.

streaming video still downloads it to your drive dumbass

God, that'll be the day. And then all the normalfags will finally fuck off, and we can stop catering to them.

Speaking of youtube-dl, how does it work with some of the unlisted sites?
Generic extractor?
If so how can I tell it to extract subtitle files from sites other than youtube?
Especially since the subtitle location is the same as the video but with vtt/srt/ass extension?

horde everything before it gets taken down

Or you could add their channel to your RSS feed + everything you said about downloading their prior videos.

I use it to download videos off adultswim

Whoah is that Cody Cigar when he was young, before his car crash? Very rare pic.

I use it this way in my bashrc:

alias mp3='youtube-dl -x --audio-format "mp3" $*'

quite handy when you come across a cool song on YT and you want an easy way to dl its mp3

Damn wish you were my bro :(

hooktube.com

You can use hooktube.com which is basically youtube-dl in a browser if you want to have your normie youtube experience.

Basically him, but i use it for music

I recently used it to download a playlist of a '90s popular local show. The guy did a really good job and uploaded subtitles, proper descriptions for the episodes, chapters (which get parsed from the description) and relevant thumbnails. I configured youtube-dl to embed all these things.

Other than that I regularly use it with mpv to normally watch YouTube, since it works way better than a web browser

Try cclive OP

Won't HTML drm standards be broken in like a week after release? Sure it'll be "illegal" to tamper with the browser's drm implementation, just like how torrenting is "illegal" now, but come on.

I use it to download porn.
>but why download porn?
Because I like watching the same porno multiple times, but I don't have the capacity to remember hundreds of generic porn titles, and videos sometimes get removed for copyright or other random reasons.

Listen to this user, if you ever watch it more than once then download it. You don't want to learn this the hard way by finding out the video is gone.

>that video you can never find again
Where is it bros?

$ youtube-dl -f m4a
>inb4 muh flac

...

>How do people typically use this?
I stream it into mpv which seems counter-intuitive at first until you realise it's far superior and won't gimp your experience by fucking with the quality every few minutes or by preventing you form buffering the whole video (dependent upon cache size) or preventing buffering while paused among other things, I don't know how people can watch something like twitch without youtube-dl piped into a local media player

I have had occasional issues where pausing for long periods at a time cancelling the download, web players are usually smart enough to pick up where you left off but it's still a problem on a local setup but it can be avoided if you care enough

drm for flash is already a thing and it's basically only applicable to things like paid streaming services i.e., netflix amazon hbo hulu etc

>happiness is waiting for streams to buffer

>no, you cnanot have my scripts
reddit poster please go

What's the desktop?

mpv 'youtube.com/watch?v=hkDD03yeLnU'

Downloading is less tiresome than seeing a loading screen. Specially if you know you don't need to see it cause you already have content browser says its buffering make sense? plus when u stream the content doesnt your system download it anyway?

>Also used for porn
do you dig around for youtube porn or are you a gray area fetish kind of guy

you can use it to download from other sites than youtube

I use Jdownloader 2 since it also does full playlists and you can set a particular resolution and format as default, which makes downloading several videos or playlists way easier.

It also does the same with images, audio files, anything it can find in the url. And it works in most porn sites.

pelase don't download my videos i don't get ad revenue if you do that, and then I'll starve

stream it if you're only going to watch it once

I use it if I want to download a video and watch it offline, such as in a plane or outside cell range something.

1-put in folder with mpv
2-start mpv with link to video
3-???
4-profit

>I have had occasional issues where pausing for long periods at a time cancelling the download
this is something that i have on every stream be it twitch or youtube if i pause it for some time then instead of just continuing there it kills it and restarts the dumb stream.
youtube-dl+mpv is a godsend for such things

github.com/mps-youtube/mps-youtube

>implying it will load if you arent using windows 12 drm edition
kekking at these goyim

I use it to download all the music videos I like. it's great.

I lot of good videos get pulled by yt or original uploader. If I find a good video I always archive.

>rtmpe

>rtmpdump

To download rtmpe you need some kind of key for each website, something like auth key/token each site has a specific key and it needs it cracked or obtained by other means, without it you cant downliad anything

>720

I use it bypass the need to log in on BBC iPlayer and to download videos from YouTube that I wish to watch in high resolutions on my dogshit laptop.

I use it this way.

Let's you watch jewtube without using non-free js

>voice commands
What do you use for voice commands?
