Anyone hyped about the Ataribox? I'm just glad we're getting a Linux top box.

Atari has always had the nicest design
What is that?
Atari is launching a new console that's going to be using Linux and it'll run games that a mid-range PC can. It'll also serve as a media top box.
So this is basically a Steam Machine with a different OS except not overpriced? It's hardly a console then. Just a different looking desktop PC/Laptop. It will probably fail unless they deliver a few good exclusives, because you can get all that on a desktop PC and get a cheap Chinese android media player.
Similar but the steam machine had that dumb steam is hammered into it. Most people didn't know what it was. The big news other than hardware is that it's a Linux top box with PC hardware unlike the shield tv or fire TV which is just an Android box on low end hardware.
I'll probably buy it desu. I doubt gaming will be good on it for most games since a lot of Linux games are wine ports. Which is why I think they should push devs to use Vulkan and make a decent exclusive or two.
can we just install xubuntu or w/e and use it as a desktop pc?
hmmm the Ouya was crowdfunded too
how much $$$
you could install xfeces on top if you added the repo/package manager for it.
Will definitely wait to see what people do with it, but it is a really attractive box.
but can you install a different OS?
Why would you make a linux gaming console when you can make a windows 10 gaming console? Sounds like a waste of time
>windows 10 gaming console
>linux gaming console
>waste of time
wait, was that the joke?
Windows has more games
>xfeces
Fuck off, you're not superior for using a different distro, you're just a huge faggot. I say this using a bleeding edge distro, different people have different wants and needs for a distro.
>As a Linux-based open system, the Ataribox will also promote freedom for users to run what they want. Users will have free access to the underlying OS to customize as they wish.
Instead of using it a console I'll probably turn this into an anime box desu.
>“People are used to the flexibility of a PC, but most connected TV devices have closed systems and content stores,” he said. “We wanted to create a killer TV product where people can game, stream and browse with as much freedom as possible, including accessing pre-owned games from other content providers.
Tfw when this turns out to be a more popular steam machine than a steam machine.
Still waiting for more details and full spec. Can we access the bios like a regular PC and change boot settings? Are they planing to release it as a stand alone device without any controllers? Will there be bluetooth? What I/O connectors are there? It is fanless?
Because Atari can't customize Windows to suit its needs
What might be nice if this thing is successful is that we might be able to get more developers developing on Linux.
Yes. Seems like your going to be able to modify this device to your hearts desire.
$250-$300.
I wouldn't be surprised if this thing out does the steam machine. What killed the SM was there were like 20 something different versions with steam os.
This thing seems like it'll be hackable day one but I hope we can. Everything else well learn later but I really want to know what the UI will be like.
That would make the box $100 more expensive for no good reason.
