I would tentatively subscribe to there having been a downswing in overall thread quality, though you have to factor in some amount of oldfag bias. As one spainon put it in another thread, these are just very polarizing times without simple answers - and it reflects in the discourse on here.
Now I don't know about most boards on here but it's definitely way better still than something like Sup Forums. I don't have to hide threads on here yet, but when I left that board for good it took about 60 to get started with attempting some sort of constructive exchange.

Though i dont think memes and irresponsible anonymous things, including media like streaming video and "activities" like alt-right, BLM, and SJW, and shit like SNS and online games are culture. Its just all about communications to share an empathy, not about creating something. Also everyone already knows the "anonymous culture" that ensures that you can always flee whenever you want to is shitty, and its already over even though it was a thing.
The internet is a form of distribution of media and communications. It cant surpass the forms unless you cooperate with someone to make some creative stuff with your identity open.
