As a kid who started out with C++, Java at my uni course turned out to be much nicer to write than I expected and I can sort of understand the idea(s) it has.

You had big library support and amazing IDE plus stable and robust enterprise ecosystem.

It's Cross platform and it's easy enough to port stuff to other platforms.

Java is ingenious. The idea that the same program can be executed on any machine so long as a JVM is created for it makes programming a highly productive activity. Granted, there are cases when Java should not be used over other languages, such as when speed is of necessity or for embedded programs. Thus it is critical to remember that as with any toolbelt, all tools are useful, but all problems can't be solved with a single tool

tl;dr Java skeptics BTFO

problem is there is a new version of Java published ever 11 minutes
version hell killed Java as a desktop application platform

Awesome standard library.
