FIxed it finally.
Instead of using recursion to travel the tree lazily and find my target node, I added a "contains" array at the base of each tree, branch and twig. So now it just follows the "contains" array until the "vid" matches the argument. It's quicker than recursion which is nice, but I it means everytime I add data to the tree I have to add the new node's "vid" to every "contains" array above it.
Everyone bangs on about this browser or that browser for being so great, but browsers can't be that great if they have a call stack full error while recursing through something that goes only 3 levels deep.

Public-key crypto, since you'll be doing it for key agreement anyway. The server can encrypt a message with its private key, which anyone else can decrypt with the server's public key. If the message decrypts successfully that's proof that whoever encrypted it controls the server's private key - and thus presumably isn't an impostor. You can do this in the other direction for mutual authentication if you like, too.
If you want the gory protocol details, including mathematical proofs on how you can verify that a message hasn't been tampered with, read up on public-key crypto, message authentication codes, and then authenticated encryption.

I was hesitant to install the Steam client on Linux in the past because of privacy concerns but now I think my autism might be forcing me to do otherwise.
