When will HMD replace monitors? Is there even anyone making HMDs of decent quality for normal consumers?

Why are they all chasing +$500 price points and gaming hardware? Most people look at web pages and spreadsheets.

Getting real tired of waiting for the touch screen trend to die.

>developers making small minigames and dumb little tech demos
>not working on regular games that just happen to support VR units

gee i wonder why theyre not working

because HUD still gives terrible headaches and has prohibitive battery usage

That's a cute boy.

who is that semen boi?

Jesus Christ Anzu,
How long until (s)he does porn?

you can't make regular games support VR without severely affecting the gameplay, not to mention it's a hell of a lot of effort for a tiny target audience.

VR is dying the same way it did in the 90s.

The problem is that resolution and pixel density isn't high enough yet. This is first wave of "good enough" VR headset that all used displays for phones. Give it a generation or two to get your displays made for VR and go from there.
GoPro didn't become common till like their 3rd or 4th model.

Yes you can, just have a floating screen.

Stop thinking about VR as a gimmick and think of it as a new paradigm.

Step 1 is to make a virtual workspace, a virtual desktop, so we can backport all previous content. This would effectively make HMDs a monitor replacement. After that you can make things that really take advantage of VR.

For no reason this is yet to be done. We are still at the 'look at this cute toy' phase. For decades...

The res sucks, but the problem is the software. Current models would be 'good enough' to work with if we had the UI support.

Not ideal, not great, definitely going to mess up your eyes a little, but it could work.

I think if VR can continue improving and growing, you'll see an HMD in around a decade that would be good for normal desktop use. Right now theres an '8k' HMD (two 4k panels) coming out, and it would be good for desktop use, but of course the price is probably sub-1000 if not more, and is still ridiculously large.

Nice shilling but oculus go is a joke I cant believe they seriously went for this useless cheapskate h/w design

he main problem is the limited utility of a headset that needs you to move around and turn your head, but obstructs your view of the surroundings. AR will be far more useful than VR

No one wants to wear some nerd mask for more than 5 minutes

>Hey boss can we spend $400 on monitor replacements plus $500 on hardware to run them?
>Oh, for each person.
>Plus we have to run some shitty third party desktop virtualisation program and the Rift can't even actually function as a primary monitor.

Not sure if that's gonna fly user

>>Stop thinking about VR as a gimmick and think of it as a new paradigm.
Just because something is new doesn't mean its better than the old thing it aims to replace. VR is cool technology but in practical terms its a solution in search of a problem.

When Sword Art Online becomes reality. The current "VR" headsets are literally gimmicks.

Mate I said that it's an expensive trashy gimmick. How is that shilling?

The go is even more pointless.

No one is making worthwhile HMDs.

HMDs are to displays what headphones are to speakers.

They could be incredibly useful if they weren't treated like toys.

Imagine instead of a tiny 4" phone screen you have full surround visuals. Instead of a 6 monitor setup you have an infinite number of monitors. This should be a huge gamechanger for everyone that uses computers, which is everyone.

its cheaper then new monitors, the problem is that it fucks you up if you use them 8 houts a day. Balance is screwed with, brain thinks the senses are halucinating and induced puking, like with sea sickness.

Why VR don't incorporate EEG controls yet?

see
I wanted to have that setup.

$400 may be cheaper than the highest end ultrasharp, but it's still more expensive than some 4k monitors.

Not to mention most businesses use $50 monitors.

I used to own a dk2 and used it a lot. They are shitty but why not at least work towards general adoption. You get used to them pretty fast and dk2 had horrendous res and all kinds of issues.

She never needs to do porn, she gets mad bank just being cute and fuckable

>How long until (s)he does porn?

Well the two biggest uses of headphones don't apply to VR. First is that you don't want people around you to be able to hear what you're listening to to avoid disturbing them. This is a much smaller concern with a visual medium. Looking at a screen doesn't disturb others around you like blasting music can. Second is wanting to block out the outside world. Its easy to walk down the street without being able to hear anything, its a lot harder to walk down the street without being able to see anything.

Anyway, what does the computer user gain from it, if he isn't gaming? Sup Forums regularly shits on people with large numbers of monitors, saying there's no way to effectively use all that space, since you can only look at and concentrate on one thing at a time. Excel spreadsheets don't need to be an immersive cinematic experience. And remember also that whatever VR does, to be widely adopted as anything more than an expensive gamer toy it doesn't just have to be better, it has to be really decisively better than an ordinary monitor to persuade people to spend much more money and put a goofy contraption on their head.

>what does the computer user gain from it
Having a bigger workspace is always more advantageous. It is faster to flit your eyes slightly than hammer keystrokes looking for that document.

Instead of being constrained to a 22" rectangle now documents can be arranged anywhere.

A common situation when working with spreadsheets is wanting to see 2 or 3 sheets at once, having some data to read or enter. It's really not that hard to imagine the effects of freeing a computer from a small rectangle to all around you.

By the way, there are a lot more benefits to headphones than what you think. Eg sound quality, surround sound. Translating to monitors, obviously you go from a tiny 4" window to all around you in every direction. But you can also use things like foveated rendering, fov, dof, and perspective for ui.

>foveated rendering
whats that?

and they cant do dof right? unless they have a different display technology

Carmack just gave a talk where he said he'd rather have magic software than magic hardware. Implying the software is shit, and the hardware is currently good enough to give people great experiences and value. Basically some super high system would be just polishing turd.

never. that's why everyone thinks vr is a flop, because everyone expected it'll replace monitors. it won't, it's not nearly as comfortable and its only advantage is vidya that fully utilize head tracking.

it's not for normal users, it's either expensive toy with gimmicks like this vrchat thing or other weird ass (but fun) experimental games or replacement for display in sim games. it's a niche and it will be a niche, the only question is whether it'll stay alive or not. "vr platform" grows in amazing rate though, even as expensive and inaccessible as it is now, so i hope to switch my dk2 for cv2 soon

pretty sure ir tracking is better for sim games anyway
video game developers have utterly failed to make anything worth VR

pretty sure you never tried vr. i'm playing racing sims on daily basis and trackir isn't even remotely comparable to vr

And he is right. So far there is no killer app for headmounted displays.

vr doesnt have the ppi for flight sims

Foveated rendering is rendering the part that you are looking at with higher resolution. There was a MS research paper a long time ago showing performance requirements could be reduced 98% with a fairly naive algorithm without the viewer noticing.

Basically you don't need to render the peripherals at high fidelity because you can basically only see movement that far out. It doesn't matter that the tree you aren't looking at is LoD swapped and has a low res texture because your brain can't tell.

Compared to something like the Rift that needs 4x the hardware to run anything, using eye tracking and foveated rendering you could see cutting edge visuals rendering on a smartphone.

The Fove is a HMD that implements eye tracking to do this, and DoF among other things.

Both are right. VR seems like a gimmick, and also, devs are making shit games.
However, it IS possible to make regular games that run well on VR, look at the serious sam ports (not the new VR game, the first and second encounter ones).
There's also a GREAT mod for doom3

>tfw no anzu gf

They prioritised gimmicks instead of core features. That's why they are low res, have no real software support, and have motion controllers and all kinds of crap bundled.

You can't even run the Vive or Rift as primary monitor. They aren't even PnP displays...

It's even worse than that. The developers making software don't know how to use anti-aliasing or how to render text, they don't follow the best practice so even the basic stuff looks like ass. To make the killer app you first have to know how to make just an app.

Inferior technology wins all the time, its all about shilling it, look around a lot of tech companies have more or equally as many marketing personal as developers

really hard to believe she is t*rk

...

She is pure. Her name is Anzu.

That dude tucks so hard the compression caused jpg artifacts on her face.

> weaboo trash

Into trash it goes.

It's a wig.

You forgot that she's a Turk, no less

She's already grown old and wrinkly. her subscriber count is already falling like a rock, lol

and 3 more even qtier will rise up to take her place. as the population goes up and cosmetics just get more pwoerful and more people go on the internet the amount of qties available online will just always go higher

VR will literally deprecate all those whores.

She (male) is pure!

We all float there.

Is anyone working on an Operating System?

a fucking roach (male)

she's a cute little girl!

Once I get my Rift I want to work on a VR DAW with virtual racks and modular synths.

We will get 3 generations of flatscreen OS' projected to hmd before we get an OS built for vr.

anzu is 3DPD trash

bump

How do I get "MORSHU," off my Computer!!!

Look he weazeled his way in.

Jokes on you, Im drinking liquor thats been out of production for over a decade and playing space sims on my vive tonight

Turkroach Sup Forumsack here. You should both go back to Most Turks I know look like that. The brown ugly shits you find everywhere in Europe who rape and steal are K*rds.

Traps aren't gay.

Traps are the least gay thing ever.

>as the population goes up
I have some bad news regarding whites on that...

oh my god you're right lol
the population of young japanese and chinese is going down too

south east asian and african qties only

>nosebleeding picture

This really got a meme by attention whores

>replace monitors
What's the fucking point of that?
There's no advantage to using a HMD over standard monitors for mundane tasks.

>There is no advantage to having unlimited monitors of unlimited size over a single 19" monitor.

Ok grandpa. You sure are short sighted.

...

Somebody seriously need to sort Anzus face out. She looks like she fell on her face and never recovered.

>t*rks

I posted yesterday, so I'll post today.
I worked in a company that owned a VR playroom in the center of the town (~100k people). Prices were ~$18 for an hour but we were all giving away coupons for an hour for free on some events, some people had multiple of them. All they had to do was call or contact through the website to reserve a spot. 10 people at most with coupons came, some called and said they will come but never came and others never even thought about it.
I spent around 10 hours in total there, mostly playing Serious Sam just for the nostalgia.
Gear was 4 HTC Vive sets with 16GB RAM PCs, all were 970 GPUs and they were i7s, no idea which one. Playing a simulation or a game was smooth, no problems with that. Sadly, it was all just some big mess as not many people were interested. We're talking about 2 digit number throughout 6 months...
Only thing I really liked about it was when we were making a simulation/game for it, some Christmas story or w/e and it was featured in town square.
So there you have it, some info about how it goes when you try to execute something with it. Useless tech for now, not many useful things to do with it but play some repetitive games which are made in stages. Tried porn with it, it's fine I guess, not my thing really. Some high quality videos were really nice to watch with it. Games, apps and simulations are shit.

Maybe because arcades are dead and $18 to play video games for an hour is pricey.

Should have looked into arcade business model and why they are extinct desu.

I didn't run it so I didn't care about the business that much. It just shows how much people were willing to try something new. We gave away like 300 or so coupons for an hour, no one cared to come for free.
LAN gaming centers are popular here, there are 3 or 4 of them with max distance between them ~300m and they are packed. None of those people cared enough to drop in and try VR for 15 minutes, which was ~$5. Marketing was actually decent, a lot of news portals were talking about it and it was featured in local news channel and there were some posters around the town.
VR has little to offer for now, it could be only interesting to devs.

ITT: fa/g/gots confuse a girl for a male and indulge their gay wildest dreams like annoying cunts

Tbh she kinda looks like a boy though.

You're still limited by the HMD resolution. It's the same thing as a real monitor. The only difference is you move your head to "scroll" the windows into view instead of using the mouse+keyboard.
